Abstract

UKmap is a large scale mapping programme developed for the UK and launched in 2010 with
a London wide database. The database contains a unique combination of information at a very
detailed level including individual buildings, land ownership parcels and road information
such as parking bays and bus stops. The associated database includes land use data, address
information, points of interest and 3D aspects including the height of buildings. The data is
currently used widely by both public and commercial organisations for many applications
including security planning, asset management, urban renewal projects, strategic modelling
and risk assessment. The data was used in planning for the Olympics and the initial database
is now being extended beyond London, with pilot data being collected for the West Midlands
connurbation.
The UKMap Paris project seeks to assess the viability of applying the data model and the
range of attributes to the French market, in particular with a view to the creation of a similar
database for Paris. As part of the evaluation the project will determne the market potential for
a commercially-generated mapping database that can be used alongside that published by the
national mapping agency or in some cases be a viable alternative.
