PIE Mapping Data Exchange

Abstract
The PIE data exchange is a concept to build an open exchange for transport information. The
exchange will allow dynamic and real time distribution to multiple consumers, web platforms
and mobile application developers.
With an open data exchange, we can connect all traffic related data in a city e.g. traffic
sensors, traffic cameras, weather sensors, public transport and in-vehicle data. We can create a
network of information, making a new dataset that is more useful than the sum of its parts.
We can derive new mashups of data to suit new applications on-demand by understanding and
identifying the relationships between data. This new data could easily drive traffic planning in
a new and intelligent way. For example, overlaying weather and historic/real time traffic
information could predict traffic issues at large events.
Local authorities will be able to publish and visualise their data on the exchange. Developers
can then access and mash up data for innovative applications. The PIE data exchange will
ensure that data is current and robust, building trust between local authorities, developers and
end users.
