Historic Futures POC project

Abstract
This Proof of Concept project will research, define and test an innovative new algorithm,
applying principles of network theory to assess ‘responsiveness’ of global value chains, at
scale and without bias such that relative performance within and between value chains can be
assessed. The algorithm will operate on data collected using Historic Future's (HF’s)
innovative String3 technology.
All brands and retailers are exposed to risk from the unknown organisations and processes in
their global value chains. Accurately measuring how quickly value chain networks can
respond to information requests from brands and retailers provides radically new insight into
value chain management. The proposed measurement algorithm could double subscription
rates to HF’s String3 service, as well as improving life-time value of each subscriber.
HF are recognised experts in value-chain mapping with world leading technologies and
consulting expertise. We make it possible for companies to collect and manage information
from primary production to finished product and to communicate good practice to their
customers. Over the past 10 years HF has raised ~£6.5M in funding and generated more than
£4M revenue from brands (including Tesco, Walmart, Marks and Spencer et al.) and
environmental organisations (Forest Stewardship Council, Environmental Defense Fund et al.)
HF will shortly complete a Development of Prototype project - co-funded by InnovateUK - to
develop and test a new online service (String3). This project has proven that (a) most brands
and retailers (96% of survey respondents) "agree" that they experience significant impact
from lack of accurate value chain information and (b) String3 has the potential to be an
effective new tool which brands and retailers value. During the project it has become clear
that accurately and transparently measuring ‘responsiveness’ throughout the entire value chain
has the potential improve value to subscribers, catalysing adoption.
