An Innovative Recycled Mixed Plastics Engineered Panel

Abstract

General domestic plastic waste tends to be mixed heavily with non-plastic contaminants. These contaminants mostly act to inhibit adequate formation of finished articles. Existing multi-step cleaning and purification techniques are technically challenging and highly expensive. As a result, only a relatively small percentage of plastics are recycled, estimates in the UK are 27%. Furthermore, it is estimated that 3 million tonnes of mixed plastic waste ends up in landfill across the UK each year. The technology under development by ETE aims to address this issue by allowing plastic waste to be used directly as a raw material, without first requiring elaborate separation and cleaning processes. The implications are profound and will result in the world's very first high performance eco-engineered panel, leading to significant diversions of waste landfill and the creation of high-value product streams.
