Historic Houses, Global Crossroads: Revisioning Two Northern Ireland Historic Houses and Estates
Lead Research Organisation:
UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM
Department Name: History and Cultures
Abstract
Our aim is to:
1. Make these heritage assets unfamiliar again as global crossroads, enabling multiple global and local publics to meaningfully connect their lived experience with them;
2. Co-produce replicable models for the heritage sector of historic houses and their environs as entangled locales of diplomacy, international ecological exchange, interconnection, identity reflection and formation.
Our international team of specialists from four UK universities, the National Trust, National University of Singapore, and University of Toronto, alongside curators, grounds staff, trustees and seven highly committed cross-sectoral partners, have collaborated over 18 months to:
a) offer transformative interpretation, new knowledge and innovative public programming to an enlarged, diverse set of audiences through targeted outreach, digital storytelling and ground-breaking publications;
b) establish new networked relationships between local and international communities, ethically unlock the extraordinary visitor and research potential at each site of unstudied Indigenous, Chinese, South and SE Asian and Arctic materials, and link material culture with originating and diasporic communities;
c) give scholarly and international public prominence to under-researched material culture and ecologies via workshops, creative residencies, a suite of accessible, interactive digital outputs, and interdisciplinary exhibitions;
d) generate capacity in inter-community collaboration and applied environmental knowledge (Clandeboye) and expand public understanding of rising water levels and biodiversity loss (Mount Stewart);
e) realise a pressing National Trust policy aim to drive innovative programming using data by developing a field-leading transferable Choice Modelling Cultural Value Analysis at Mount Stewart, shared with Clandeboye Estate, and discussed across the world's econometrics, GLAM, and heritage policy sectors;
f) foster impactful new dialogue between previously siloed historical, ecological, agricultural, heritage, and econometric practice and research;
g) impact and empower schoolchildren embarking upon the new OCR Natural History GCSE;
h) co-produce creative, experiential public-facing outputs that beneficially engage new local and international audiences.

| Title | Adaptation of Choice Modelling for Heritage and Conservation Contexts |
| Description | This is a novel adaptation of stated choice survey and choice modelling methods specifically developed for use in the heritage and conservation sector. While choice modelling is an established technique in transport and environmental economics, its application to heritage settings, particularly those involving historic houses, gardens, and global cultural narratives, is still rare. This survey integrates intangible and emotional values into the design, combining visitor preferences, conservation motivations, and perceived barriers to engagement. The survey includes both choice tasks and attitudinal components, designed in collaboration with heritage stakeholders, making it particularly suited to informing policy, pricing, and outreach strategies in heritage contexts. It is not yet formally published, but it is currently being used in an active research project. The method and its results will be shared in forthcoming academic publications and can be made available on request. |
| Type Of Material | Improvements to research infrastructure |
| Year Produced | 2025 |
| Provided To Others? | No |
| Impact | This methodological adaptation enables, for the first time, the structured analysis of visitor preferences in a complex heritage context, where our specific application is Mount Stewart. It offers deeper insights into how both visitors and potential visitors value conservation actions, global connections, and sustainable practices. These insights are expected to support better-informed decisions about how to engage the public with historic properties and adapt heritage offers to a changing societal context. The framework can be applied to similar sites across the UK and internationally. |

| Results and Impact | "Benefitting from the new farming subsidies: grass and soil" Monday 23 June 2025 Clandeboye Estate, Northern Ireland - PI Joy Porter & Co-Lead Annie Tindley This workshop is designed to support Northern Irish farmers to profit from the evolving agricultural and environmental subsidy regime and the rapidly changing policy and ecological landscape. This matters more than ever as the sector faces increasing environmental challenges, both global and specific to the NI sector. Government directives supporting a shift to ecological priorities and increasing value of natural capital in agriculture requires a new approach to thinking about the industry and changes to the way farming entrants are trained and supported. How can Northern Irish farmers and land managers respond to these challenges and profit from the new funding landscape? This workshop will bring together farming interests, trainers and educators to map out future directions and support for the sector. Perfect for those interested in: • Northern Irish farming - practice and policy; funding • Education & rural skills Workshop objectives: • Share best practice between Dumfries House and the Dufferin Foundation as leadership sites for rural education and skills. • Collectively define the opportunities in the agricultural and environmental policy and subsidy changes: diagnose the potential barriers - what needs to change for farmers to benefit? • Disseminate and share best practice between Scotland and Northern Ireland Very successful workshop with farmers and rural organisations reporting they found this helpful. |

| Results and Impact | As researchers and universities seek to contribute to their communities and wider society, there is growing emphasis on collaborative, participatory approaches that make research relevant, responsible, and useful. Yet economic and structural inequalities challenge the ethics of such engagement, particularly when working with communities around their culture and history. Approaches such as community-based research (CBR) encourage researchers to reflect on how to ensure that research serves the interests of the communities involved by building reciprocal relationships and democratising knowledge production. Decolonising methodologies, developed by Linda Tuhiwai Smith and others, also seek to rethink the role of the researcher, not as an extractor of data, but as a partner in shared inquiry and social transformation. Such approaches are often undervalued within academic research structures. Ethical review processes may assume a conventional "researcher-participant" relationship, while institutional frameworks for evaluating research (such as the REF in the UK) can create pressures to prioritise short-term, measurable impacts over truly equitable and ethical partnerships. This round table discussion at the Centre for Public History explored ethical and non-extractive research practices in public engagement, with a focus on the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector, communities and public history. The panel brought together experts in community engagement, the cultural sector, and engaged research to reflect on how researchers can avoid replicating extractivist models-where knowledge is taken without reciprocal benefit or accountability. The purposes of the event were to: - highlight extractivism in engaged research relationships and how this curtails the public benefit of research - support researchers and engagement partners to reflect on their own practice - promote further conversations and research into effective engaged practice - promote better engaged research practice in future |

| Results and Impact | In July 2025, Briony Widdis and Lisa Rea Currie conducted short interviews in Belfast and Bangor, to gather memories and stories of Clandeboye Estate and the Blackwood / Dufferin and Ava family; collect information on levels of public awareness of the estate, its people and their histories; and develop understanding of whether these names are important to communities living in Northern Ireland today. The interviews were in a 'vox pop' format and were undertaken on streets named after and connected with the Blackwoods and Clandeboye; including, in Belfast, Burmah Street, Ava Street, Ava Avenue and Blackwood Street; and in Bangor, Dufferin Avenue and Dufferin Square. The researchers also called into Dufferin Memorial Hall in Bangor. Managed by Bangor Parish, the hall was in use on that day for a 'drop in' providing refreshments, clothing, food parcels and table games for refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable adults. In addition, a visit to the war memorial at Ward Square in Bangor, which includes the name of Basil Blackwood, fifth son of the First Marquess of Dufferin and Ava who was killed during the First World War, informed their understanding of how the family is remembered. The research will be included in a 2026 journal article on 'Connecting communities in contested spaces: storytelling, placemaking and sharing authority in post-conflict Northern Ireland', co-authored by Olwen Purdue, Briony Widdis, Lisa Rea Currie, and Emma Reisz. |

| Results and Impact | Linked-In item from Julieanne McMahon-Grier National Trust Cultural Heritage Curator and Co-lead of project: 4h • Edited • 4 hours ago On my way back from an inspiring first day at the Irish Museums Association Annual Conference in Tralee, where the theme is Collections in Transition. It was an honour to present alongside Briony Widdis, PhD and Emma Reisz introducing the collaborative research project Historic Houses, Global Crossroads, led by Joy Porter. We shared insights into how collections at Mount Stewart and Clandeboye reflect global connections, discussing ethical considerations and layered meanings in these historic houses. The conference sparked so many thought-provoking discussions: ?? Museums are not just keepers of objects, but of evolving stories and perspectives. ?? The importance of basic inventories - without them, how can we truly know what we care for? ?? Patrick O'Donovan TD highlighting the central role of museums in shaping and expanding the definition of Irishness, welcoming new communities and voices. ?? The challenge of making books and archives more engaging for visitors despite conservation limitations. ?? The potential of new digital platforms like the Museum Data Service to unlock research opportunities across collections. It was also a real treat to visit Kerry County Museum for the first time! A huge thank you to the Irish Museum Association for organising such a fantastic conference and to everyone who shared their insights and expertise. Looking forward to continuing these conversations! hashtag#IrishMuseumsAssociation hashtag#CollectionsInTransition hashtag#Museums hashtag#HistoricHouses hashtag#CulturalHeritage hashtag#HistoricHousesGlobalCrossroads |

| Results and Impact | This full-day symposium was co-organised by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Centre for Public History, Queen's University Belfast, and Columbian College of Arts & Sciences, George Washington University. It explored the role of museums and public history in divided societies. The event opened with a Welcome from Benjamin Filene, Deputy Director of the Division of Public History and from Northern Ireland Minister of Communities, Gordon Lyons, followed by an In Conversation between Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III and Kathryn Thompson (Chief Executive of National Museums NI), chaired by Steve Velasquez of the US National Museum of American History. Expert panels examined themes of restorative justice, conflict transformation, border histories, and creative approaches to difficult pasts. Queen's University participants included Professor Olwen Purdue (oral histories along Belfast's peace lines) and Dr. Briony Widdis (empire, family archives, and identity). This event strengthened research collaboration between QUB, the Smithsonian, and George Washington University, while supporting interdisciplinary teaching and contributing to transatlantic conversations on museums' roles in reconciliation and inclusion. |

| Results and Impact | As part of a panel on 'The personal is historiographical', Briony Widdis presented a paper on intersections between memory and public history in the care of colonial-era archives. She explored the methodological and ethical challenges of researching private colonial records. Drawing on case studies from Northern Ireland, the paper examined how collections operate as sites of memory that, while shaping individual identity, may also support radical hope. She proposed that Temi Odumosu's 'ethics of care' for colonial archives (2020) could provide a framework for making personal collections public, in ways that centre the people whom the records marginalised. In an age of anxious public history, the paper considered how reflexivity might be responsibly mobilised to generate inclusive historical narratives. |

| Results and Impact | This international, interdisciplinary workshop was co-hosted by the University of Virginia, the Centre for Public History at Queen's University Belfast, and the USHMM Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies on 14-17 March 2025. It comprised two days of intensive workshops and discussion, followed by a public event. It brought together historians, anthropologists, curators, and public historians to explore ethical challenges in representing difficult histories. Panels addressed marginalised voices, family histories, post-conflict and post-Holocaust memory, and the ethics of data in research and curation. Presentations included contributions from Queen's University researchers Olwen Purdue (on shared oral history in Belfast) and Briony Widdis (on engaged research methods for researching and interpreting colonial photography in Northern Ireland). The event deepened transatlantic academic collaboration and contributed to international dialogue on ethical engagement with contested pasts. |
