Curious Travellers: Thomas Pennant and the Welsh and Scottish Tour 1760-1815

Lead Research Organisation: University of Wales
Department Name: Centre for Adv. Welsh and Celtic Studies

Abstract

The Curious Travellers Project will collect, present and analyse a significant body of material relating to the phenomenon of the Welsh and Scottish Tour as it developed in the years c.1760-1815. It will open a window onto the vivid and often entertaining accounts of scores of 'curious travellers' who headed for the peripheries of Britain in search of the primitive, the picturesque and the sublime - and often found the foreign, and the unsettling, surprisingly close to home. Our starting point is the work of naturalist and antiquarian Thomas Pennant of Downing (1726-1798), whose pioneering tours in Scotland and Wales (1771-1781) were widely read, directly inspiring the Highland journey of Johnson and Boswell and hundreds of others. His 'omnivorous' style, drawing on information from an imposing network of correspondents, weaves together natural history, antiquarianism, literature, history, aesthetics and politics.

Often cited as an authority or an influence, Pennant's work has received little attention in its own right: the archive is scattered and difficult to use. The first aim of the project is to catalogue the many hundreds of letters to and from Pennant, and present them in a searchable data-base. This tool will improve our knowledge of the antiquarian, scientific and literary networks of the period, and allow us to trace both Pennant's careful preparation and information gathering, and the complex development of the composite and much-revised texts of the Tours themselves.
The 'transperipheral' nature of Pennant's Tours (as a Welshman, albeit with unionist sympathies, exploring Scotland and his native Wales), along with their importance to later writers and travellers, make them an ideal point from which to investigate travel-writing from Wales and Scotland after 1760, when an improved transport infrastructure and a new sense of British identity inspired an increasingly affluent middle class to explore their national peripheries. Hundreds of published and manuscript accounts of tourist experiences form a still largely untapped resource for the study of history, material culture, literature and language. The second aim of the project is to make a generous selection of unpublished Tours of Wales and Scotland available online, each with a short contextualizing introduction and linked to a series of maps and pictures.

In the light of recent work on global exploration in this period (Cook's Pacific voyages; the travels of Joseph Banks) the parallel 'exploration' of Britain needs critical reassessment. The domestic tour was an extraordinarily successful genre, second only to novels and romances, but has been relatively little studied. Yet it arguably played an important role in the construction of national histories, both at a 'four nations' level, and in a larger British context. Travel-writing uncovered the past in the landscape, through sites (cromlechs, churches, castles) popular culture (language, costume, song, and 'national character'), objects and images (antiquities, landscapes). Because landscape-writing and antiquarianism are often seen as conservative forms, the politics of the tour as a genre in this period is rarely considered. How far, during a period of revolution and war, did native histories, and the Celtic languages, disrupt that larger narrative of Britishness and of national 'improvement'? Pennant's Tours, for example, despite his unionist stance, were readily absorbed into nationalist discourses in both Wales and Scotland. In considering how the tour genre helped to 'create' versions of British history, the project will examine travellers' engagement with vernacular Celtic cultures (poetry and song), and ask how far their perceptions were influenced by contemporary ideas from science and art.

Besides producing two new electronic resources, we will explore these issues through an informative dynamic website, 2 monographs, articles, a volume of essays, conferences, events and exhibitions.

Planned Impact

Research into the Welsh and Scottish Tour has the potential to impact on a range of organisations in the heritage, education and tourism sectors of both countries. The project has been developed in consultation with representatives from many of these groups, and a range of events is planned to disseminate our research to various different audiences. Because the topic is so closely linked to matters of place, landscape and heritage, we envisage that many more opportunities will come up as the work progresses.

Heritage: Museums and Galleries.
Our 'book-end' conferences in 2014 and 2018 are linked into two major international exhibitions and will benefit from the wider publicity surrounding them. The first, in National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, explores visual aspects of the Tours in conjunction with an exhibition of the landscape painter Richard Wilson. The second, celebrating the tercentenary of Scotland's oldest museum, the Hunterian in Glasgow, will explore material culture and antiquities. Both exhibitions are supported by the Paul Mellon Foundation at Yale, and thus have an international dimension. Further smaller exhibitions focused on the manuscript tours are planned with both the National Library of Scotland and the National Library of Wales, to coincide with further day-conferences. A day event with schools is planned in Ceredigion Museum for 2015 (see below). In conjunction with NLW, additional funding will be sought towards a touring exhibition in 2019, to celebrate the work of Thomas Pennant's principal artist, Moses Griffith.

Education: Schools, further education.
A joint event hosted by Ceredigion Museum will focus on the theme of 'travel in the olden days' for primary schools; this will include reading, exploring objects, and competitions for creative writing and drawing. We will also develop sections of the Curious Travellers Website in consultation with Dr Paul Evans (Deputy Head, Denbigh High) to provide resources for the secondary-level history curriculum: these will be available in both Welsh and English. In the sphere of adult education, we will contribute to the lively programmes of talks and walks organized by local history societies: we have strong links with the Thomas Pennant Society and the Edward Llwyd Society, and have an event planned with the former. The website will be freely accessible to the general public, who will benefit from access to the new research tools: the database of Pennant Correspondence, and the searchable online corpus of Welsh & Scottish Tours. When publicizing our work in the university sector, we will ensure that the site is made known to the Open University; U3A etc.

Tourism:
Pennant's quotability is nicely exemplified by the large hoarding greeting arrivals at Edinburgh Airport with his generous description of that city: 'It possesses a boldness and grandeur beyond that I have ever seen'. Naturally enough, this project presents abundant possibilities for exploring the history of tourism in Wales and Scotland, from the provision of site-specific material to an understanding of the development of tourist itineraries, and of changing expectations. We have had enthusiastic responses from bodies including Visit Scotland, Visit Wales, CADW, the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments and National Trust for Scotland. Our Creative Responses strand, which will see contemporary artists and writers retracing parts of Pennant's Tours, may be further used to enhance the tourist experience in certain places.

Media
Constantine is currently scripting a half-hour programme on the 'Welsh Tour' for BBC Radio Wales, which will raise the profile of the subject; we are also developing a pitch for a three-episode television series aimed at BBC4, using the Curious Travellers title. BBC Radio Scotland are interested in following one of the Creative Responses tours. We will use the website to publicize and blog our various events as they happen.

Description New knowledge: Our research continues to reveal the extent to which tour writing helped uncover competing 'histories' of Britain, at a time when Britain was trying to define itself as a distinct entity. The comparative focus on Wales and Scotland in our project is also entirely new, and is causing our audiences and collaborators to rethink cultural histories within the British Isles. We have also drawn attention to the potential value of C18th and C19th travel writing to environmental studies. The freely-accessible, searchable digital editions of previously unpublished tours include many by women, who were chronically under-represented in the publishing world of the 1790s and 1800s. Their voices bring into focus a whole range of issues including life-writing, travel and the body, and the reception of key texts such as Pennant's Tours of Wales and Scotland.
New Methodology: Our research into correspondence networks has uncovered the unanticipated extent to which eighteenth-century travel writing was composed of multiple voices, even in texts that appear to have a single author: there is often an entire network of correspondents bringing material to the published text. These findings will significantly alter future readings of the genre.
New collaborations: Our engagement activities at both professional and general public level have almost always resulted in fruitful and sometimes unexpected suggestions for collaboration. We have had fruitful collaborations with museums, the heritage sector and artists and writers..
Exploitation Route We are currently talking to museums, schools, OU, the heritage sector and artists and writers and hoping to take our work further.

1. A proposed 'spin-off' project with the geology department of National Museums Wales, Natural History Museum London and our Curious Travellers correspondence team plans to examine the mineral specimen cabinet of Thomas Pennant (held at NHM) in the light of the letters. We hope, if we can get further funding, to incorporate this object in a Virtual Cabinet of Curiosities, exploring the natural history artefacts that survive from Pennant's collection.

2. Our Exhibition of artists' responses to Pennant travelled to several venues in north and mid Wales, thus giving the artists further opportunities to show and sell their work; we are also producing a booklet of the exhibition which will promote their work still further. For several of them, collaboration on our project has resulted in new aspects to their creative practice.

3. Our work on Pennant's letters has enabled us to help with several external enquiries across a variety of disciplines, but most notably in the field of natural history and geology.

4. We are hoping to collaborate in the future with the Royal Commission of Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales to develop 'virtual' historical tours of Wales which would give modern-day tourists access not just to the landscape and artefacts of Wales, but allow them to follow in the footsteps of those first tourists, and sample some of the art work and the texts they produced.

5. Our exhibition in London in the Dr Johnson House Museum on Pennant, Johnson, Hester Piozzi and travel to Scotland and Wales was extremely successful, attracting around 4700 visitors in 3 months We will use this experience to develop future exhibitions with other institutions when applying for further funding to take this project to the next level.

6. We will continue to work closely with the Thomas Pennant Society in Flintshire, making sure that all findings from future research continue to be shared in ways that enhance the local community (workshops, events, walks, etc).

Description Early findings from the project were used in a half-hour radio programme (see engagement, Discovering Romantic Wales) and an art exhibition (Maps and Makers - see creative outputs). Our project blogs (www.curioustravellers.ac.uk), both 'Research' and 'Walkers' have attracted non-academic contributors, with the latter especially continuing to evolve as a creative critical space. For several months in 2016 we worked closely with a dozen artists towards an exhibition held in Wrexham in October-December 2016 (see Oriel Sycharth, creative outputs). This work will develop in other settings and in the form of a non-academic publication in 2017. We supported a successful HLF bid for a project based on understanding and appreciating the complex cultural heritage of the Dee valley. We have contributed two articles to the British Library's Topographical Prints website which aims to open up collections to a wider public. We have given talks to numerous local societies up and down Wales, and been closely involved in two other artistic exhibitions (both held at the Museum of Modern Art, Machynlleth, see engagement) and in other cultural events (eg a story-telling festival in Aberystwyth, see engagement). In 2017 we successfully organized two further iterations of the artistic exhibition originally held at Oriel Sycharth in Wrexham: these took place in Oriel Brondanw, Snowdonia and Old College Aberystwyth (both tourist attractions), and greatly expanded the number of people who saw the works and participated the number of events which ran alongside. We also organized a short-term exhibition focused on the Pennant archive at the National Library, which was timed to coincide with a public lecture and was visited by many members of the public. Our most effective intervention to date, however, has been our collaboration with Dr Johnson's House in London. This is a museum in Dr Johnson's original house, dedicated to all aspects of his life, which runs exhibitions and events throughout the year. Our exhibition Curious Travellers: Dr Johnson and Thomas Pennant on Tour ran from October 2018 to January 2019 and showcased the work of the project throughout the house. We held a series of events - talks, readings - and attracted, over the total period, 4724 visitors. This was a 28% increase on a comparable exhibition last year, and demonstrates perfectly how academic-nonacademic collaborations can be mutually supportive. 2021: We are currently developing ideas for further, larger-scale collaboration with various museums, drawing on Thomas Pennant's work as a naturalist, commissioner of artworks and collector. Research from Curious Travellers was fundamental to our involvement as partners in the successful bid for an EDRF-funded Interreg grant led by Cork University, 'Ports, Past and Present' which began in May 2019: this has a strong community engagement focus, and has allowed us to bring our research material and ideas to new audiences. 2022: Further funding applications have been made towards developing aspects of the Curious Travellers project at both research and engagement level. We very much hope to be returning to this work soon. 2023: We were successful in obtaining further funding (2022-25) to continue our work with Curious Travellers, and now have a new AHRC funded project (CT2) up and running. The success of this bid was partly dependent on close partnerships and collaborations forged during CT1, with the Natural History Museum, the National Libraries of Wales and Scotland and various museums and heritage sites across the UK.

PI Contribution Before putting in the bid for Curious Travellers we organized a visit by members of the society to the National Library to see Pennant manuscripts. We also included founder-member Paul Evans in our research team (specific money allocated to help with educational outreach and writing a biography). Since then TPS members have attended many of our outreach events; M-A Constantine gave their Thomas Pennant Silver Jubilee Lecture in October 2015; we have mutual links between our websites. Nigel Leask gave the 2017 pennant lecture, and Ffion Jones has been invited to give the lecture in 2018. In Autumn 2017 the Society took project members to visit the remains of Pennant's house at Downing, and the church where he is buried.
Collaborator Contribution They provide a reliably enthusiastic audience, and help to spread the word about the project. Individual members have provided very useful research leads (Mostyn Hall library; memories of Downing Hall before demolition). The Pennant-country walks they designed are decsribed on their website - exactly the kind of local interaction our project requires.
Impact PI Constnatine delivered TPS Silver Jubilee lecture October 2015 The Society members regularly attend at our events (some contributing as speakers), which discuss a range of disciplines reflecting Thomas Pennant's own interests: natural history, history, travel, literature, art. Results and Impact Layered Landscapes was a day-school on geology and travel in Romantic-era Britain, jointly organized with the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, and timed to coincide with their exhibition of the 1815 geological maps of William Smith. Three members of the Curious Travellers team (MA Constantine, E Edwards and Paul Evans) gave talks, as did practising geologists, museum curators, the exhibition curator and an eminent historian of the science of natural history. People came from all over Wales, London and the southwest, including members of different Geological Societies. It was a genuine (and at times challenging!) encounter between disciplines. A direct outcome was the intention to organize a day event in London, centerd n Thomas Pennant's specimen cabinet which is held at the Natural History Museum: NMW and NHW hope to work with us matching up letters in the Pennant correspondence to identifiable mineral specimens.

Two artistic outcomes: the poet Phillip Gross (who read during the event) will collaborate on our creative strand next year; and the sculptor Ali Lochhead is keen to use Parys Mines (Anglesey) as part of her artwork for Sycharth exhibition in 2016.
