Abstract
'Pilgrimage and England's cathedrals' employs a ground-breaking combination of interdisciplinary perspectives and methodologies to identify and analyse the core dynamics of pilgrimage and sacred sites in England from the 11th to 21st centuries, to assess the growing significance of English cathedrals as sacred/heritage sites today, and to inform management of/public engagement with these iconic buildings. Set against the background of the worldwide growth of pilgrimage and the increasing importance of sacred sites, the project's innovative approaches and timely research agenda also contribute substantially to defining and establishing the emerging field of Pilgrimage Studies.
At the heart of this project is a new, wide-ranging analysis of the meaning and breadth of 'pilgrimage' and the role of sacred places past and present. Why did pilgrimage matter in the past and why does it still matter today? In exploring these issues, the project focuses attention on the role of cathedrals: places where, uniquely, national and local history and identity, material culture and traditional and emerging religious practice can be encountered together. Pilgrimage was central to the development and status of English cathedrals in the Middle Ages and although most shrines were destroyed at the Reformation, many of the great churches and monasteries which housed them remain as cathedrals today, literally shaped by their pilgrim past and retaining a strong pilgrimage legacy. Anglican cathedrals are increasingly refocusing on and reinstating shrines, reflecting an international multi-faith phenomenon in which an estimated 200 million people across the world engage in pilgrimage and religious tourism annually.
Cathedrals in England are the group of sacred sites visited by the largest, most diverse group of people. A recent report reveals that 27% of adults resident in England visited an Anglican cathedral at least once in the previous year (THEOS, 2012). Moreover, over 40% of those visitors came from faith traditions other than Christianity or had no religious affiliation. This suggests that cathedrals are seen as shaped by, but transcending, Christianity, offering unique access to the 'spiritual' within the context of history, heritage and culture, and providing meaningful spaces for people of all faiths and none. These developments demand fuller, rigorous, multi-disciplinary investigation so that the implications for cathedrals, visitors and communities can be explored in detail.
The project uses 4 cathedrals, Canterbury, York, Durham and Westminster (chosen to represent a range of historical, social, geographical, cultural and denominational settings, and varying policies on charging for entry) as historical and contemporary case studies. Research methods include analysis of architectural and visual material, archives and contemporary documents. Interviews, photo/audio-diaries, and participant observation will be employed to gather and examine the experiences and views of cathedral staff, volunteers, pilgrims, tourists and local residents (of all faiths or none).

Planned Impact
A key feature of 'Pilgrimage and English cathedrals, past and present' is the specific set of research questions generated by the PI's wide experience of creating cathedral interpretation schemes and pilgrimage resources. There are therefore clearly-identified partners and audiences already seeking the information and outputs which the project will produce. Two related strands of engagement will be developed. The first will give cathedrals much-needed understanding of past and present pilgrim interaction with buildings, thus strengthening management and visitor provision. The second will equip the growing numbers of organizations and individuals reviving and using pilgrimage sites/routes today with essential information about historical and current practice and demographics of pilgrimage in England. These processes will radically enhance access and inclusion, bringing social, cultural and economic benefits through extending heritage tourism.

The project team will work in depth with 4 Case Study cathedrals (Canterbury, Durham, York, Westminster) which together had over 3.2 million visitors/pilgrims in 2012. Greater understanding of the ways cathedrals were designed to be used and of current visitor/pilgrim experience and expectations will be provided and explored, equipping clergy and visitor and education services to manage and interpret buildings more effectively. The Virtual Canterbury pilgrim model will be a key tool: a major new development in digital heritage interpretation, it will help cathedrals and other sites understand, use and communicate their architectural and historical heritage. It will be freely accessible online and used in exhibitions, in 'Pilgrim Experience Days' recreating medieval pilgrimage for visitors, pilgrims and school groups, and in training staff and volunteers.
Project findings will also inform national policy and strategies for all English cathedrals (38 Anglican, 19 Roman Catholic). Anglican Cathedrals alone attracted 11.3 million visitors in 2012, not including overseas tourists. Through conferences and training workshops with partners, including the Association of English Cathedrals (representing Deans and Chapters), Cathedrals Plus (Education and Visitor Officers), and English Heritage [see Letters of Support], project outputs will shape policy on visitor access, re-instatement of shrines, interpretation for multi-cultural audiences and charging admission to sacred sites. A final conference for all stakeholders, including AEC, Cathedrals Plus, Church Buildings Division, Roman Catholic Patrimony Committee, English Heritage, DCMS, Historic Religious Buildings Alliance and Churches Tourism Association, will be held at the end of Year 3 by invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Visitors to cathedrals from all backgrounds, including local communities and schools, will gain greatly improved understanding of these major heritage/sacred sites through enhanced interpretation and access.
2. Pilgrims, pilgrim organizations and schools
The current resurgence of pilgrimage in England both crosses denominational and faith boundaries in unprecedented ways and draws in many without formal religious beliefs. It includes new uses of historic Christian sites (e.g. Asian and African communities now hold pilgrimages to Aylesford Priory while Hindus visit St Jude's Shrine, Faversham). Pilgrimage is also a key topic in the RE curriculum. The project website will offer a unique resource for individuals, organizations and schools, providing articles, images and a database of resources, and encouraging information exchange through an online forum.
Legacy
Through transforming management of sacred sites, enhancing visitor experience, and creating new dynamic channels of information and interaction, the project will build a lasting legacy and foundation for future projects. For delivery mechanisms see Pathways to Impact.

| Description | The focus of our research at Canterbury Cathedral (one of our four case-study cathedrals) was to explore the lived experience of medieval pilgrims once they had arrived in the cathedral. We used very detailed and textured digital modelling and animation to create these, as a research tool for testing hypotheses as well as presentation. These allowed us to test how the architecture and interplay of structures manipulated and shaped the physical experience. What could be seen, heard, touched? Was there a recognised 'route'? We created four movies: one focused on the main shrine area, a second based around the more exclusive Corona Chapel head shrine, a third exploring the tomb shrine area in the crypt, and lastly the experience of attending the first mass on Becket's feast day (29th December) at the site of his matryrdom (north transept). The creation of these helped shape our understanding of some of our archival and archaeological research findings, promoting better understanding of medieval pilgrimage to the shrine church of Thomas Becket. |

| Impact | The creation of these models has influenced and informed the interpretation elements of the multi-million pound HLF-funded project 'Canterbury Journey' at Canterbury Cathedral. They will be a major element in the public interpretation of the cathedral and its pilgrimage history. The models were also a significant factor in securing multiple partner interest across the city for wider use and public access, which has resulted in our successfully securing an AHRC Follow-On project for 2018. This is using the modeling, with supplementary contextural mapping, for tourism and heritage purposes across the city of Canterbury, including a revitalisation of their World Heritage Site. They will also be used by Canterbury Museums and The British Museum for major exhibitions on Thomas Becket in 2020 (the 900th anniversary of his birth, the 850th of his death and the 800th of his translation to the shrine in Canterbury Cathedral Trinity Chapel. |

| Description | Key findings which are now shaping future cathedral management include: 1. Greater understanding of the ways in which space was configured in medieval cathedrals to accommodate their multiple roles and enhance pilgrim engagement and the relevance of these perspectives in supporting visitor interaction today. 2. In particular there is a need to open up small, 'safe' spaces with focal points, such as the many chapels, altars etc which would have been present in the Middle Ages. Surviving chapels need to be opened up (not used as stores) and to be provided with signage which signals explicit invitation. 3. Recognition that spiritual exploration within sacred places is important to many who may present as 'heritage tourists' and self-identify as being of 'no religion'. Cathedrals staff and volunteers therefore need to welcome all visitors with greater openness and not assume that they can prejudge visitor needs or aspirations. 4. Historical research and contemporary observation demonstrates that allowing visitors from all backgrounds to experience services such as Evensong from an 'adjacent' position rather than making them sit in the Quire, is greatly valued and creates a powerful sense of engagement. 5. There is a need for a national volunteer policy for cathedrals and other historic churches, covering recruitment, training, safeguarding and discipline, which will ensure that visitors receive appropriate care and support. All the research findings are now being discussed in detail with partners including the Church of England, Historic England and other bodies and a follow-on project to embed these findings in policy, guidance and daily management strategies has been requested and a proposal is in preparation. |
| Exploitation Route | As outlined above, the findings have been welcomes by a wide range of national bodies. The 'Becket Connection' Follow-on project recently awarded by the AHRC The Becket Connection will mobilise the rich research outputs of the 2014-17 AHRC-funded 'Pilgrimage and England's Cathedrals, Past and Present' (PEC) project (with Canterbury Cathedral as Case Study) to develop resources for the Becket 2020 anniversary, with benefits for local & regional culture, heritage tourism, education, and community engagement. Key partners include Canterbury Cathedral, the City Council, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Business Improvement District, Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury Museums & Galleries, the British Museum, and Museum of London. 2020 marks a triple Becket anniversary: 900 years since his birth in London, 850 years since his murder in Canterbury Cathedral, and 800 years since his relics were installed in a glittering shrine which drew pilgrims from across Europe. This major commemoration coincides with 'The Canterbury Journey', a £24.7 million Cathedral conservation, education and interpretation project (2017-2021) which will ensure a long-term legacy for resources created. A second 'follow-on' proposal to create a handbook and training strategies for the Church of England and Historic England which will embed research findings long term and shape management of cathedrals and other historic churches nationally, is being developed. |

| Description | Our findings have been deployed through a series of strategic training sessions and workshops for cathedral staff and volunteers at each of the four case study cathedrals: Canterbury, Durham, York and Westminster. In all cases, innovations have resulted in terms of revising goals, managing spaces and enhancing visitor engagement. In addition, a series of high-profile national workshops and consultations have taken place during 2017 and 2018 which have resulted in major shifts in policy and strategy. These include presentations to the Association of English Cathedrals, Cathedrals Plus (Tourism and Education) a fringe presentation at the Church of England General Synod, a workshop for Historic England, English Heritage and National Trust staff, a presentation to the Church Visitor and Tourism Association and a one day project conference at Lambeth Palace for all English cathedrals, with representatives from all the key governance and statutory advisory bodies. As a direct outcome of these activities, the Church of England Church Buildings Division and Historic England have requested a joint follow-on project to embed the project's research findings permanently in future management strategies and this proposal has been funded by AHRC. AHRC follow-on funding has also been awarded to mobilised further use the project's research findings on Canterbury in an innovative collaboration with the City Council, Canterbury Cathedral and tourism and culture organisations to enhance visitor and educational engagement in the region. The research outputs and training activities have continued to shape national strategy and have resulted in the creation of the 2020 Year of Cathedrals and Pilgrimage. The PI sits on the National Executive overseeing this new tourism and visitor engagement initiative across England and Wales which includes special events at every cathedral, the introduction of 'Pilgrim Passports, the creation of pilgrim routes to every cathedral in England and new forms of local, regional and national collaboration between cathedrals in order to engage communities and build new audiences. Key research findings have led to the co-creation of national guidance on Visitor Engagement with the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England, published December 2020. But a fascinating research project initiated by the Centre for the Study of Christianity and Culture has demonstrated how this is a false separation. 70.A journey around a cathedral engages all the senses, and visitors to cathedrals of all sorts find themselves touched, or nudged or gripped by God. | Results and Impact | Co-Chaired panel Exploring the 'Special': Places and Processes of 'Specialness' and presented paper 'Seeking, finding and experiencing the special in Westminster Cathedral'. Panel description: How are places marked out and spoken about as special? York Minster, the island of Iona and Westminster Cathedral each have a hefty reputation, attracting different narratives about their significance. Each is a storied place in its own right. In these places and in other places of significance, reputations are built, spread, perhaps even fulfilled, partly through the medium of stories: by visitors, caretakers, tourist organisations, even by the scholars who study them. How are 'official' and 'alternative' stories about a special place formed and how do they interact with each other? What is the role of the narrative in the making of special places? This panel responds to these questions. By offering snapshots of three places reputed to be 'special' - York Minister, Iona and Westminster Cathedral, the panel will show the different ways in which these places have been narrated and by whom. It is fundamentally interdisciplinary in its approach, bridging Religious Studies, Human Geography, Anthropology and Folklore Studies. Its data-orientated focus will take 'religion' out of the textbook by presenting three exercises in place-making in action. Finally, its attention to the 'special' seeks to widen the conversation surrounding 'religion' by encouraging a new and challenging vocabulary. |

| Results and Impact | We offered 12 different hands-on activities related to prayer, pilgrimage and the cathedral 10am-4pm. The activities were all suitable for all ages and included crafts, prayer, sound and scent. Over 200 people from more than 10 countries participated, with a high proportion of under-25s. Feedback was extremely positive, both on the feedback forms, verbally and via social media. The PEC team plus two interns staffed the event with cathedral staff and volunteers. Participants had a leaflet with a map and the activities listed, which they could get stamped as they did them. At the end they could claim a pilgrim badge and a silver sticker if they wished - these were universally popular! The cathedral were delighted with the response and the significant increase in dwell-time for families and foreign school groups as they engaged with the various activities. The perceived 'added-value' of the event being free once you had paid for entry to the cathedral generated considerable positive feedback for the cathedral, which suffers from some negative responses to the charging regime. The cathedral plans to run a similar event annually and to offer selected activities from the day on other occasions. |

After lengthy discussion, it was agreed that this would be an activity day of sensory exploration based in the Cloister and around the cathedral. We would plan and devise a range of all-age activities which would focus on the different aspects of pilgrimage and utilise the senses as a way of engaging with pilgrimage past and present. If successful, this would form part of the cathedral's activity offer. |

| Results and Impact | We ran a half-day workshop presenting the findings of the research to cathedral staff involved with education and the visitor experience and asking how these resonated with their experience and whether they might influence the policies and practices in their own institutions. There was lively discussion in which the need for the creation of central information resources upon which any cathedral or large church could draw was strongly promoted. Several members reported the findings supporting their own observations, with all agreeing that these needed to inform and in some cases change policy and practice going forward. The area of volunteer training and management was particularly highlighted. There was a consensus that half a day was not long enough and this subject needed to be discussed again in a wider session of longer duration. |

| Results and Impact | 72 people followed the self-guided sensory prayer trail we had devised and 13 people took the guided walk.The feedback was very positive for both. The two guides subsequently offered the walks again on two other dates and the the cathedral plan to offer these as bookable events regularly. The trail around Open Treasure was delayed but is still planned. The self-guided leaflet was very popular and the shells were left around the shrine of Cuthbert, as well as being taken home.The cathedral plan to sell the leaflets at cost as a regular part of their visitor information offer. |

| Results and Impact | A review of the Pilgrimage Experience day was held with cathedral staff and volunteers. More feedback had been gathered from a repetition of the guided walks and the cathedral was keen to explore how else to build on the project. They decided to develop the trail idea by developing in-house a range of themed trails, as well as training up new guides to offer the guided walk and the new trails. They have also changed their photography policy in light of the project findings into how people engage with spaces. They will now allow photography at key locations in the cathedral and accept that this is part of the spiritual engagement process. |

| Results and Impact | A formal working group was convened by the cathedral to plan out the content and logistics of the Pilgrimage Experience Day. The format agreed was for the production of a sensory prayer trail around the cathedral and a guided pilgrimage walk to be led by two experienced cathedral guides. We would produce the content and leaflets and offer participants a cockle shell to place where they wished, or take home. The cathedral extended the plan to include their devising a similar trail around the Open Treasures exhibition as a trial. |

Panel Description: Communicating Pilgrimage Chair: Marion Bowman (The Open University), Dirk Johannsen (University of Oslo) Pilgrimage is a worldwide phenomenon that appears to be growing in popularity, among both traditional and new practitioners. Whether for devotional purposes or bildungsreise, a great variety of people have made - and continue to make - their way to Jerusalem; European Protestants are now flocking to Santiago de Compostela and Trondheim; non-aligned spiritual seekers and those notionally of 'no religion' are finding new roots and routes of pilgrimage. The panel contributes to the emerging field of Pilgrimage Studies by asking how historical and contemporary actors communicate the meaning of 'pilgrimage'. Contributions to this panel address how pilgrimage is presented, conceptualised and promoted in a variety of media, and how these accounts and characterisations shape and actualise the understanding and experience of pilgrimages and pilgrimage sites. Contributions are encouraged on how the practice of pilgrimage is substantiated in narrative accounts, both fictional and autobiographical; in film; on websites, blogs and social media; in religious commentaries as well as touristic marketing. It provoked lively discussion and debate amongst those with statutory and advisory responsibility for cathedrals and other sites. Although our research had been cathedral-based, it became clear it also had significant implications for those with responsibiliity for other built heritage with which people may engage on a number of levels. Our research was described by a senior HE advisor as 'gold-dust' and as as fundmentally challenging how they think about significance and the use of space in cathedrals. |

The questions and discussions with curators and art historians showed that they had changed their opinions and ideas on the use of digital reconstructions in exhibitions and the classroom. |

| Results and Impact | We devised two prayer trails for the cathedral based on the life and example of St John Southworth for the public to use. This was to explore whether having a structured way of engaging with the cathedral would enhance people's experience and deepen understanding, but also raise the profile of the saint and encourage people to connect with him . We also offered people the chance to light a special candle and place it where they felt most drawn to do so. We were then able to monitor how many people took the trail leaflet, where they placed their candle and invited their feedback. The feedback was very positive, with all but one respondent saying doing the trail had enhanced their experience of the cathedral and given them a new way to interact. The cathedral then offered the leaflets again, on and around the saint's feast day and the leaflets are now a permanent feature of the Westminster Cathedral offer to visitors and schools. |

The cathedral offered the leaflets a second time, on and around the saint's feast day and we invited a local school to come on the feast day to test the leaflet. The pupils' and teacher's responses were overwhelming positive with all respondents reporting that this had changed the way they interacted with the cathedral and deepened their knowledge of the saint. They would all do the trail or one like it again. The trail leaflets are now a permanent feature of the Westminster Cathedral offer to visitors and schools. |
