Assembling Alternative Futures for Heritage

Description	Limbo Landscape Lab (part of the Evening In Arkadia project): During summer 2018, Wheal Martyn will be exhibiting works in the 'Limbo Landscape Lab', by artist-in-residence, Antony Lyons. These can be seen - and heard - in both indoor and outdoor spaces at the museum. As an environmental artist and creative researcher with the Heritage Futures project, Lyons offers imaginative reflections on the 'in-between' quality, and some long-durational changes - ecological and visual - in the clay-mining landscape where he has spent time fossicking over the past two years. These changes are partly a result of planned restoration of former mining areas, but plant-life, water, weather, climate etc. have unpredictable and unmanageable ways of their own. Primarily using film and sound (video-sonics), Lyons explores some creative perspectives on agents of change - human and biophysical. As well as the museum, partners on the project include the China Clay History Society, the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI), degraded-lands restoration specialists Future Terrains, and the Heritage Futures project. Also taking part are a group of photography students from a local secondary school (Poltair, St Austell) and collaborating musicians. Evening In Arkadia: Partly referencing an ancient pastoral utopian ideal and a theme in landscape painting, the creative land-based project Evening In Arkadia is currently grounded in three landscapes that are undergoing substantial transformation. For environmental artist, Lyons, the project title condenses themes of liminality, light & dark, decay/decline & ecological regeneration, recovery, cycles of time and deep-time. Taking the long-view. All three landscapes are also study sites for the connected Heritage Futures research project (Transformation theme). One is a 'rewilding' area in Portugal; another is the ex-military site of Orford Ness on the Suffolk coast; the third is the clay-mining area in Cornwall. The wider context is that of a time of a shifting, fading - of certainties?, illusions?, hegemonies? - morphing into a new zeitgeist. In these limbo landscapes, how do we relate to place, to animals, to plants - in new ways? Globally, there are probings for radical realities of multi-species healing, communitas and consilience, rooted in dynamics of deep-time physical and ecological forces; and the vortex patterns of Sensitive Chaos.

Orford Ness, Suffolk (2019) 'Limbo Landscape Lab - Sensitive Chaos' i)The first of these local research, involvement and exhibition phases is now complete. Following initial site-specific research, building relationships and collaborations, a long-running public exhibition has finished (following an extension to its running time) This phase included successful roll-out of the following: a) Participation with Heritage Futures in landscape and community-based research into changing conditions and future directions. This included co-organising a major workshop with cross-sectoral and international stakeholder participation, including artists from the USA, Portugal and Ireland. As part of this workshop, an artist talk was held by Antony Lyons at the Wheal Martyn museum in May 2018, for an audience of 50. This served to launch the 'Limbo Landscape Lab' project. b) Collaboration with the Bristol-based artist group Letterpress Collective in the design and production of handmade print-run of 100 artist-posters for the Limbo Landscape Lab. Artist-postcards have also been printed. c) Collaboration with guitarist Adrian Utley (from Portishead) in the co-production of a video-sonic work ('Sky Tip Circumstance') for presentation in the Limbo Landscape Lab. d) Building a relationship with the main industrial heritage museum in the area (Wheal Martyn Museum), initiating a long-term (6 months) artist-in-residence period, and presenting installation works (film, sound, sculpture) in two parts of this popular regional museum. e) Working closely with a local school - Poltair School, St Austell - in particular with the GCSE Photography Class, and influencing the creating of a themed coursework project, directly concerned with the subjects of my artist-residency and researches. This involved classes at the school, assigning work in photography and film; school visit to my exhibition, and detailed preparation for a public exhibition of the students work (more below). f) Working closely with a community group - The China Clay History Society - to co-explore their archives and perspectives on the local landscape. This involved the production of a short film based on the role and voice of one exceptional ex-miner. g) Sound-recorded walks with invited participants. These were undertaken in the local clay-mining landscape and at the Eden Project. h) 'Limbo Landscape' student show of work hosted at the Wheal Martyn museum. This was the first ever public show by these students, and included still-imagery as well as film/sound works. There was good exposure of this online on 'Whats On, Cornwal'l, which included coverage of my exhibition at the museum. i) The exhibition/installation spaces at Wheal Martyn Museum were visited by c. 3000 people, (2,200 recorded by a digital counter, operating until Sept 22, whereas the exhibition was extended to Nov 4th) j) Press releases were sent out by Exeter University and Wheal Martyn Museum, leading to good coverage. k) Online communication and marketing via social media (mainly Twitter), websites (Museum, Heritage Futures project and Exeter University) l) As part of AL's Arts Council funding, a linked student photography&film exhibition with Year 10 students from Poltair School in Cornwall took place at Wheal Martyn in November 2018. This followed workshops at the school, and an artist-led walk with the class. m) 'Sky Tip Circumstance' - an artist film (with musician, Adrian Utley), presented in exhibition and artist talk (Wheal Martyn, Cornwall) May-Nov 2018 n) For 'Limbo Landscape lab' exhibitions, artist-posters have been produced with The Letterpress Collective (Bristol). Artist postcards also produced. Further outputs will appear in 2019 and 2020.

Title	Heritage Futures Exhibition at the Manchester Museum
Description	Combining latest academic research with incredible objects, the exhibition looks at heritage as the building blocks of the future, through four themes: Profusion explores what we should we pass on to future generations in an age of mass production and consumption. Diversity reflects on how diversity in nature and in cultural traditions can help people and nature cope with future uncertainty. Transformation looks atheritage as something that is not fixed, but that changes over time. Uncertainty considers what should we pass on to future generations, when we can't be sure what they will want or need. We can't be certain what the future will be like, but through Heritage Futures, we can at least try to ensure that the decisions we make today help provide people with the things they might need and want in the future. In our Heritage Futures Studio we are asking people to help us imagine, design and begin to create the future together. Alongside the exhibition, artist Shelley Castle from Encounter Arts is creating an installation; the Human Bower, taking inspiration from the extraordinary craftwork of the Bowerbird. These amazing birds gather, display, and exhibit the things they appear to hold of high value outside their twig constructions. The work will encourage conversations around what we hope the future would look like, what we could hold onto to make that happen, and what we need to let go of. The exhibition is inspired by work being undertaken by the "Heritage Futures" research programme, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Professor Rodney Harrison (UCL) acted as principal academic consultant on the exhibition, drawing on contributions from its team of academic researchers. It includes a series of films produced for the Heritage Futures research programme, and other creative outputs including a series of tiles produced by Antony Lyons which duplicate a set of tiles now stored in the Memory of Mankind archive in Austria.

Description	Heritage Futures has had an impact on heritage research and management policy; has impacted on professional heritage practice and the practice of a series of creative practitioners with which these projects have worked; and has had a broader impact on general publics in changing the ways in which they think about heritage and its role in building specific futures. Natural and Cultural Heritage Preservation constitutes a major area of contemporary global concern. Despite widespread acknowledgement of the need to develop more integrated approaches to natural and cultural heritage conservation and management policy and practice and the strong interconnections between them, the trend has been towards increasing specialisation within the sector (e.g. see IUCN/ICOMOS 2015). Each set of heritage preservation practices-endangered language preservation, or biobanking, or national park management, for example-have come to be defined by specific activities carried out by particular institutions, more or less in isolation from one another. Current global crises and transformations (from climate change to mass migration to new social movements) highlight the need to develop more sustainable and resilient conservation practices which are sensitive to inevitable processes of future social, environmental and political change and to encourage different areas of interest to pursue common goals and learn from one another. They also highlight the need for better understanding amongst general publics of the role of natural and cultural heritage in resourcing the future, and the specific ways in which they do so. (1) Shaping international heritage policy and practice: In response to this need, Harrison and his Heritage Futures team have worked closely with an international advisory board and 25 international partner organisations, bringing together professionals from a wide range of sectors who are engaged with heritage preservation to think collectively about shared issues. They have done this by facilitating a series of inter and intra-thematic knowledge exchange events involving and co-designed (through selecting themes and helping to design workshops and other collaborative activities) by these partner organisations and other invited participants to explore these questions through innovative cross-sectoral, creative, arts and humanities led activities and workshops around a series of key themes. These included for example workshops held at the site of the long term nuclear waste repository which is being constructed by partner organisation SKB, the Swedish Nuclear Waste Management company at Forsmark in Sweden in 2016 exploring issues of long term futures in heritage management; at Kew in 2017, looking at different forms of collecting and categorization practices and their influence on the definition and management of different forms of heritage; and at Orford Ness in 2018, co-organised with the National Trust and Historic England, exploring issues relating to natural and cultural heritage management in changing coastal environments. Each of these was attended by representatives of the partner organisations and other relevant practitioners (c.30-35 people for each workshop). Harrison has also organised workshops on data and heritage in conjunction with the Alan Turing Institute and British Library (2017), and with a range of UK based museums and archives on contemporary collecting practices (2018). Testimonials from participants evidences changes in policy and practice both within these organisations and more generally which have arisen as a direct result of these workshops. The involvement of advisory board members at Director and Assistant Director level at the National Trust, UNESCO, IUCN and ICOMOS has been particularly relevant in ensuring the widespread nature of the impacts of the project within international heritage practice. Heritage Futures team members also helped conceptualise, and participated in, thematic strands which ran across the two major triennial international strategic natural and cultural heritage management congresses-the IUCN World Conservation Congress and ICOMOS General Assembly-which aimed to bring together discussions around integrated management of natural and cultural heritage as part of a "nature-culture journey". Our work at both conferences is directly cited in the statement "Yatra aur Tammanah: Learnings & Commitments from the CultureNature Journey at the 19th ICOMOS General Assembly, Delhi 2017" https://www.icomos.org/images/DOCUMENTS/General_Assemblies/19th_Delhi_2017/19th_GA_Outcomes/ICOMOS_GA2017_CNJ_YatraStatement_final_EN_20180207circ.pdf and in resolutions on heritage and climate change which were co-proposed by team members and adopted by the ICOMOS General Assembly (see https://www.icomos.org/images/DOCUMENTS/General_Assemblies/19th_Delhi_2017/19th_GA_Outcomes/GA2017_Resolutions_EN_20180206finalcirc.pdf) (2) Changing the ways in which heritage is understood by its users and publics; inspiring, co-creating and supporting new forms of artistic expression: An exhibition on Heritage Futures was developed in collaboration with the Manchester Museum to communicate the more expansive view of heritage and its role in resourcing futures which Harrison had developed. As the exhibition was being developed, the museum decided to extend its originally planned 3 month run to 2 years (December 2018-Autumn 2021) and to make the exhibition central to their major planned redevelopment (called "Manchester: Hello Future") in recognition of its significance, not only to the museum's visitors, but to the museum's expanded understanding of its own role. Heritage Futures' research programme themes have formed the basis for a number of activities which the museum have developed to engage with their own partner organisations and community, for example micro-grants to develop projects in their adjacent "Heritage Futures Studio". In its first year the exhibition was visited by over 360,000 people. A visitor survey conducted at the beginning of 2020 showed that the exhibition had an impact on visitors' intended personal recycling behaviours and their understanding of the importance of collective action in conserving the natural and cultural environment and preventing further climate change. In addition, there was impact on visitor's understanding of heritage as a concept. Prior to visiting the exhibition, 85.7% of those surveyed said that heritage was more associated with the past; having visited the exhibition 90% agreed that heritage was more associated with shaping the future. It also generated an enhanced and expanded understanding of what heritage encompasses, with several of the visitors noting their surprise at the inclusion of language and contemporary objects/buildings in the context of heritage. Testimonials from the Director of the museum and curator of the exhibition attest to the ways in which the project and exhibition have helped them to rethink their own future and the role of the museum in society more generally. The project has also engaged general publics through sessions run at NESTA's annual "FutureFest" on the concept of heritage as future making practice. This exposed the project to a c.5000 person audience over the festival. We have also produced a number of high quality research films which are presented on our project's Vimeo channel https://vimeo.com/heritagefutures Heritage Futures also worked closely with four artists to commission artistic products which relate to each of its four themes. Some of these commissions have been included in the exhibition. Testimonials from the artists show how their involvement in the project has had a significant impact on their work and future projects. The inclusion of these artistic products in the exhibition at the Manchester Museum has ensured their exposure to significant audiences which these artists would not have otherwise been able to reach (c. 360,000 per year over almost three years). (3) Shaping heritage research policy in the UK and internationally to further influence heritage management policy and practice: Finally, Harrison's work on Heritage Futures and the linked AHRC Heritage Priority Area Leadership Fellowship has had a significant impact on the ways in which heritage is defined and researched, in particular through his influence on the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council's Future Heritage Research Strategy, which Harrison redrafted with AHRC staff and which draws closely on the research of both projects to define 8 key priority research areas to guide decision making on strategic research funding. The AHRC Heritage Priority Area Leadership project has been cited as an example of Innovation in Cultural Heritage Research in a report prepared by the UK National Commission for UNESCO for BEIS on the innovative capacity of the cultural heritage sector within the UK and how it can aid international development (UKNC UNESCO 2019). Heritage Futures has been used as a case study of research impact contributing to sustainable development in a joint report produced by the AHRC and Swedish National Research Council for the Joint Programming Initiative in Cultural Heritage and Global Change (Riksantikvarieämbetet 2019). Through these direct impacts on heritage research priorities the work of both linked projects is leading to significant changes in the kinds of research being funded and undertaken in the UK. They have done this by shaping particular thematic research funding calls as well as in prioritising responsive mode research grant applications to AHRC. In turn, these changes have led to further impacts of those funded research projects on increasing understanding, and changing ways of managing natural and cultural heritage, both in the UK and internationally.

This demonstrates that the sector is open and taking notice of what we do, and is willing to reconsider historical practices within the industry. PI Contribution	Working with Heritage Futures enables the Memory Archive project (focusing on recording memories of aging locals through inter-generational exchange) the opportunity to access a wider international network in the hopes of collaborating with future projects and partners. It also enables Memory Archive to further reflect on future perspectives of local communities in abandoned landscapes who have, up until now, focused on the past.

Results and Impact	I was invited to give a seminar at the University of Exeter Dept of Archaeology on the project, and in specific the thematic grouping that is led by Exeter (this theme is led by C DeSilvey based at the Environment and Sustainability Institute at Penryn Campus). The chair reported that students and staff from other Faculties were present, therefore the reach went beyond the Dept of Archaeology. The chair also mentioned that the use of photography as method had now made her think further about her own work and the different ways she can use photography beyond representation.

Results and Impact	Over a buffet meal we played the game The Thing From The Future with conference delegates who had signed up to the event earlier. Around 80 participants spread out over tables of 10, each compared by a member of the Heritage Futures team (plus guest croupier Sandra Uskokovic (University of Dubrovnik) who expertly stepped in to fill a gap). The game was adapted from that developed by the artists collective Situation Lab. Players are asked to imagine (invent) an object - a future thing - that emerges over a time period, within a context and mood, all determined by the cards drawn. We asked participants to consider these objects in light of their own heritage practices, and to imagine how the things that heritage practictioners work with emerge out of their contexts - and how, therefore, bequeathing the 'things' of now to uncertain 'futures' may not always be the gift it is claimed to be.
