Becoming Coolies: Rethinking the Origins of the Indian Labour Diaspora, 1772-1920.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of History, Classics and Archaeology

Abstract

Between the 1830s and 1920s over 1.3 million Indians migrated as indentured labourers to locations across the world. Criticised both at the time and since as a 'new system of slavery', this 'first wave' of Indian labour migration has been negatively portrayed as the cynical exploitation of a passive Indian labour force. Those who migrated have been presented as the victims of colonial coercion and dupes of unscrupulous middle men, who exhibited no role in the decision making process, and no influence over their individual or collective outcomes. As a result nineteenth-century Indian labour mobility has often been regarded as qualitatively different to, and disconnected from, a 'second wave' of voluntary, skilled Indian migration, beginning in the 1950s, which is often regarded as the 'legitimate' root of the modern day Indian Diaspora. This project sets out to dispute such assumptions by seeking to understand nineteenth-century indentured labour migration around the Indian Ocean in the context of a longer and more diverse history of Indian labour mobility. By situating indentured labour alongside the contemporaneous migrations of soldiers, slaves and service providers from the Indian subcontinent, it will explore the extent to which existing networks, connections and communities helped to shape the processes and experiences of indenture. Drawing upon previously misinterpreted or under-utilised resources in India, Britain, France, Mauritius, Réunion, Sri Lanka and South Africa - including the personal correspondence of migrants themselves - it will assess the degree to which indentured labourers were able to make conscious and informed decisions about if, when and where to migrate. It will also explore the ways in which migrant labourers in the Indian Ocean were able to improve their status and renegotiate real or imposed identities by moving between different categories of labour, and how far they could utilise kinship and other networks to take control of the sources of labour supply. Convict indents, emigration certificates, ship registers and migrants' letters will be used to suggest a broader and more varied movement of Indians overseas than has hitherto been realised. By tracing the vitally important continuities and interconnections between different forms of labour migration, and placing migrant agency, experiences and outcomes at the centre of the analysis, this project will explore the processes of migration in a way that goes beyond the reproduction of conventional colonial and nationalist tropes of indentured victimhood, exploitation and abuse. Instead it will offer a new approach to the migrant experience that seeks to understand the impetuses and consequences of migration from a subaltern perspective, opening up possibilities for radically reinterpreting the nature and importance of migrant agency in the early formation of the Indian Diaspora.

Planned Impact

In rethinking the nature and origins of nineteenth-century Indian labour migration, the proposed research will be of interest to a range of non-academic users, such as: public history organisations interested in labour, migration, and globalisation; communities and interest groups concerned with the 'roots' of the modern Indian diaspora; and individuals tracing personal family histories. The project team will both build on existing connections with relevant communities, groups and institutions, and develop new links during the course of the project to bring their findings to a wide audience outside academia. They will be supported in this by a the Centre for South Asian Studies Scotland (http://www.csas.ed.ac.uk), the Edinburgh India Institute (http://www.edinburgh-india-institute.ed.ac.uk), and the University of Leeds' Arts Engaged programme, (http://www.leeds.ac.uk/arts/homepage/343/impact_and_innovation).

Collaboration will be a key element of the dissemination and impact strategy, and will include public events (lectures/workshops), and the provision of informational materials (pamphlets, work sheets, display materials). A number of key partners have already been identified, including the National Library of Scotland, the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation (WISE, Hull) and Wilberforce House Museum, the Bernie Grant Arts Centre and Marcus Garvey Library (London). Discussions with local and national history societies will form an important ongoing part of the research process and will shape the nature of the impact activities undertaken. These will include the Thoresby Society (Leeds); The Raphael Samuel History Centre (London), the British Black and Asian Studies Association (BASA, London), Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation (WISE, Hull), Black History Month and the Historical Association.

The project's main non-academic output will be a public facing website hosting a range of resources. As well as a blog providing regular project updates, there will be primary sources, images, maps, contextual material, short articles, bibliographies, useful links and section specifically aimed at schools. The latter will contain 'discussion packs' suitable for use in a classroom setting, and ideas and guidance for micro-research projects.

An online database of names of labour migrants in the Indian Ocean will also be created. This will be suitable for use in genealogic research and will be publicised through specific Indian Ocean genealogical web groups such as 'Imaugen. Cercle de Généalogie Maurice-Rodrigues' (bilingual, English/French) and 'GenBourbon. Cercle Généalogique de Bourbon' (French), as well as by contributions to relevant threads and lists on websites such as www.ancestry.com.

The project will target particular media outlets relating to Diaspora Indians, such as Sunrise radio station and Mauritius Now radio, and newspapers such as Mauritius Now and Mauritius News, with whom Carter has established connections. Publicity for the project will be sought through the non-academic press, including the Sunday supplements of major newspapers, Times Higher Education Supplement, Times Literary Supplement, BBC History Magazine, History Today etc.

Given the resonances between this project and current debates about child labour, migrant labour contracts (e.g. in the Gulf) and people-trafficking, especially with regard to issues such as participation, agency and opportunity, the project's findings may also be relevant to public, NGO and governmental policy. Articles on www.historyandpolicy.org, and dialogue with organisations such as Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Anti-Slavery.org will explore this possibility.

Title Cool!tude by Danny Flynn
Description An exhibition of screen prints featuring evocative re-renderings of nineteenth century migrant portraits taken by colonial officials. The photographs were taken from PDRA Marina Carter's research on Mauritius immigration registers and the exhibition was informed by her writings on this theme.
Type Of Art Artwork
Year Produced 2015
Impact The screen prints were exhibited on in parallel with academic conferences held in UK (Leeds and Edinburgh) and India (Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, New Delhi, Marc 2016) and also at entirely public venues such as the G511ERY in Tottenham, London (October 2015). The prints generated considerable surprise and discussion amongst visitors, most of whom were previously unaware of the history of Indian indentured labour migration in the colonial era. An essay ('Pulled through Time: Art and the Indian Labour Migrant') describing how the artwork was conceived and created was published by Marina Carter and Danny Flynn in the journal South Asian Studies, volume 33, 2017 - issue 1. Issue 28 of UNCERTAIN STATES, a lens-based artist collective discussing and promoting photography, also published an article entitled 'Distant Gazes' featuring the impact activities of the 'Becoming Coolies' research team, authored by Professor Reza Tavakol. This was inspired by Flynn's screen prints exhibited in G511ERY. Reza's article reproduces some of the historical photographs of Indian migrants to Mauritius, derived from the research of PDRA Marina Carter. The newspaper is distributed free of charge at Turner Contemporary, Margate, Tate Britain Reading Room and V & A London, Baltic Newcastle, Ikon Birmingham, Open Eye Liverpool and numerous other art galleries and museums around the UK.

Title Great Little Man - Coolitude
Description A collaboration with Japanese bookbinder Eri Funizaki which was displayed at the Saatchi Gallery in London in February 2017. This fine-bound artists' book sees 'Great Little Man' (who previously appeared in the books: 'Life in a Box', 'Stepping Out of a Box' and 'Life Out of a Box') feature as an anti-hero embarking upon a constantly interrupted journey during which he experiences cleansing and rebirth through acts of resistance and violence as he attempts to move around freely in a savage landscape full of borders and controlling powers. The text is inspired by Danny Flynn's work with historian Marina Carter and a team of academics from Leeds and Edinburgh Universities on the issues of diaspora, challenging existing assumptions held toward migrants. Further details here: http://www.coolitude.shca.ed.ac.uk/news/coolitude-display-saatchi-gallery and at https://g511ery.co.uk/pages/artists-books

Title Juxtapositions: Re-envisioning the Indian Labour Diaspora
Description The Juxtapositions exhibition challenged a wide range of stereotypes about historical Indian subaltern diasporas featuring a selection of images and texts about indentured migration alongside the less well known Indian slave and convict diasporas. Each panel offered viewers two images or a combination of texts and images which implicitly contradict perceived wisdoms, for example one panel depicts two tombstones - one of a French Governor, crudely chiselled, contrasting with the beautiful sculpted headstone of an Indian mason, who died at around the same time, in the late 18th century; both can be found in the same cemetery in Mauritius. Another panel featurs textual claims about the 'ignorance' and 'helplessness' of Indian migrants juxtaposed with an image of a successful 'coolie' with his family, in front of his capacious dwelling. The Exhibition was displayed in public spaces in parallel with academic conferences held in Leeds and New Delhi, and in Edinburgh at the Edinburgh Mela (Sept 2017) and alongside 'Broon Scots' and 'Coolitude' at the Edinburgh Festival of Indian Films and Documentaries (Sept 2016).
Type Of Art Artistic/Creative Exhibition
Year Produced 2016
Impact Viewers at the exhibition were invited to carefully interrogate these visual messages and gave us their opinions and some remarks about what they had learnt, on a remarks sheet which we placed in a prominent position wherever the exhibition was shown.

Impact This exhibition was viewed by an audience of several hundreds of customers of the cafe over a period of several months. Discussions were excited with the cafe owners, who are themselves of Mauritian decent.

Title Notes on Migration by Jyothidas K V and Sarojini Lewis
Description Exhibition at the Clark House Initiative Project Room, Mumbai, 14-04-2017 to 20-05-2017. A combination of archival photographs and graphic art describing how certain memories of migration transcend the border of nations and geographical distance, with examples from Dresden, Germany, India, and Surinam.
Type Of Art Artwork
Year Produced 2017
Impact Danny Flynn's Cool!tude exhibition, using images from the 'Becoming Coolies' research project, inspired this exhibition of graphic art by Sarojini Lewis, which in turn inspired a collaboration with Jyothidas K V: an artist/researcher currently pursuing his PhD in Visual Studies from School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Sarojini Lewis reflects upon the influence the 'Becoming Coolies' project had on her work in her own JNU M.Phil. thesis and in a forthcoming academic article.

Title Our Holy Waters & Mine by Andil Gosine
Description A display of 12 prints of mason jars which were used to confront the viewer with deliberately depersonalized objects alongside abstractions of archival photos or ship names written on the emigration passes of Indian migrants. Mason jars are common household objects, now commodified into "retro cool" - Gosine claims these functional jars (similar to the one his own ancestor kept, filled with Ganges holy water), create a re-labelled meaningful identity that flows from the past, but is also fluid. Although crossing the 'kala pani' (the black sea) has been interpreted as a traumatic rupture in the lives of Indian migrants, in Gosine's art, we see the subtleties that extend the personal, interwoven with a transoceanic past. The artwork was exhibited at G511ery in the Seven Sisters Road, Tottenham, in November 2016.
Type Of Art Artwork
Year Produced 2016
Impact Andil Gosine produced this exhibition at the invitation of 'Becoming Coolies' project. The work asks how we can make memory meaningful to each of us in the present and visitors to the Gallery (including a class of 30 children from Park View School Tottenham) took to this message very effectively.

Title The Great Experiment
Description A play based upon the research of the 'Becoming Coolies' project which was produced and performed in London. The research team acted as historical advisers for the play. The play received funding from the Arts Council and the National Lottery Heritage fund. It was produced by the London-based 'Border Crossings' theatre company.
Type Of Art Performance (Music, Dance, Drama, etc)
Year Produced 2020
Impact The play was performed at five venues in London: Tara Theatre (@Tara_Arts), The Playground Theatre (@PlaygroundW10), The Cutty Sark (@CuttySark), Museum of London Docklands (@MuseumofLondon). In association with the Exchange Theatre (@ExchangeTheatre) and Dugdale Centre. Description Research for the project was conducted in archives in London, South Africa, Mauritius, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Malaysia, Pakistan, and in archives in New Delhi, Assam, and North India. Our key findings were as follows:
1. The dependence of European colonies in the Indian Ocean upon South Asian slave labour in the late 18th and early 19th centuries has been underestimated.
2. The beginnings of the recruitment of South Asians for work overseas was often predicated upon stereotypical assumptions concerning racial difference and the supposed docility of Indian workers.
3. Opposition to indenture in the early decades of the trade was more than just a continuation of anti-slavery sentiment, being embedded in wider debates about conditions in India and the subcontinent's place in the empire.
4. Debates about indenture intersected with debates about other contemporaneous movements of people, including white emigration, convict transportation, and repatriation schemes, as part of a wider imperial realignment of labour.
5. Discussions about recruitment of Indian labour in places where it did not take hold (e.g. New South Wales) provide an alternative perspective of indenture debates that reveal more nuanced attitudes to the system.
6. Indentured plantation labour, although it garners most attention in the historiography, amounted to only a small portion of the South Asians who migrated to work around the Indian Ocean region during the colonial era.
7. Religious beliefs posed no barrier to migration overseas, although social customs could make it difficult for migrant workers to reintegrate if they returned home.
8. The labour contract - or indenture - was modelled upon contracts employed in the military. It imposed specific obligations on both employers and employees. It was a significant innovation in the Indian economy, as contracts hitherto were unwritten and could be upheld only by informal means. Despite this innovation, informal self-organisation and the collective mobilisation of workers remained commonplace.
9. South Asians, usually from the same communities as the migrants themselves, played a dominant role in the recruitment process, both in migration within Indian and overseas.
10. Labour migrants - especially after 1857 - came from all sections of Indian society, not only from low status groups - as is often assumed
11. Many labour migrants evinced a surprisingly sophisticated knowledge of the employment opportunities available to them overseas, and often re-migrated from one colony to another. The 'agency' and enterprise of labour migrants has thus been underestimated.
12. Indentured labour migrants were encouraged to settle and acquire land, in most colonial destinations, and the majority of indentured workers chose to remain rather than return to India.
13. There were significant remittances home throughout the colonial period, allowing many families to acquire land in their native villages.
14. Working conditions were harsh, especially in the decades immediately following the abolition of slavery. However, by the 1890s labour ordinances guaranteed workers numerous rights which they often bravely sought to uphold by means of complaints, petitions and legal process. This began well before Indian nationalist agitations on the labour issue and long before the foundation of the ILO and the development of organised trade unionism.
15. The advent of the steam ship, along with medical innovations (influenced by indigenous practices), dramatically improved the experience of overseas labour migrants in the second half of the 19th century.
16. The protests of workers played an important and neglected role in civilising the conditions of labour.
17. The campaigns of ex-indentured workers overseas had a mutually profound influence on the ideology of leading Indian nationalist politicians.
18. There was considerable competition between different colonies, and the Government of India itself did not seek to encourage overseas labour migration. Thus the Government of Madras Presidency refused to permit indentured recruitment for Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and denied warrants for arrest of absconding labours from Ceylonese plantations.
19. Migration overseas continued extensively even after the abolition of the indentured labour contract - most notably to Malaysia, under strict pre-conditions, including a minimum wage.
20. A very considerable volume of 'free migration', outwith the purview of the government, took place, especially to Myanmar and South Africa, the extent of which can be deduced only indirectly from census statistics, oral histories, petitions, criminal and inquest reports etc. This was often 'circular' in nature, with migrants to Myanmar (in particular) migrating to work for only a limited period before returning home.
21. Caste discrimination and gender discrimination were significantly diluted or otherwise modified by the experience of migration
22. Very large numbers of migrant workers returned home during the Great Depression, again during the second world war, and again after independence when in some countries they faced discrimination. As a consequence, the true contribution of South Asian migrant workers to the development of Indian Ocean economy has been widely underestimated.
Exploitation Route Through a total of 22 publications to date - including two monographs (with more forthcoming) - and a total of 78 conference presentations and other engagement activities, the findings of the project were communicated to a wide audience. Our project website has had nearly 1,000 new visitors each year, and articles in the online special issue of the Journal South Asian Studies devoted to the project have been downloaded 1,500 times to date. The two books already published by our PDRAs have been acclaimed, with Ashutosh Kumar's COOLIES OF EMPIRE being made a core text in the MA programme at India's elite postgraduate school Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Marina Carter's co-authored CHAGOS: A HISTORY being described in one review as a 'a comprehensive piece of scholarship' as well as an invitation to new research.
Four panels were organised in international professional conferences in Europe and North America (BASAS, EASAS, and twice at the Madison Wisconsin South Asia Conference) and five major conferences were organised in Delhi (x2), London, Leeds, and Edinburgh (each with audiences of 30-50). This ensured that leading academic experts in the field were engaged in our research. As a result, we have substantially nuanced public and academic debate on the themes of this research project both in Britain, India and the several countries of the Indian Ocean that received Indian labour migration in the colonial era. Revisionary perspectives that stress the diversity of experiences and agency of workers have thus become more acceptable, challenging simplistic nationalist histories of Indian overseas labour migration.
Towards the end of the project we participated in multiple public conferences to mark the abolition of Indian indentured labour migration held in various countries around the world. There will be more such conferences in 1918-1920 at which we expect the findings of our research to be represented and discussed.
Oxford University Press, New Delhi, are commissioning a new book series - edited by the PI and with members of the 'Becoming Coolies' research team on the editorial board - in order to foreground revisionary perspectives on the history of the Indian diaspora. Six of the volumes in this series will be co-authored or co-edited by members of the research team and a further six volumes are being contributed by researchers sympathetic to the aims of the project. Three PhD students have commenced or are about to commence research at Edinburgh and Leeds Universities, inspired by the project. Finally, following on from lectures given in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Japan, Bates has been invited on a Visiting Professorship to the University of Tokyo in 2019, where he will collaborate with Chinese historians to explore ways in which methodologies and theories arising from our research on the Indian diaspora can be applied in studying the history of the equally large migration of Chinese labourers overseas in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Description We organised a total of two exhibitions in India, and five in the UK (listed on the project website), as well as poetry readings, which engaged significantly with large numbers of the public. The last of these ('Juxtopositions') was held at the Edinburgh Mela in Edinburgh at the beginning of September 2017 (http://www.edinburgh-mela.co.uk). An exhibition was also held at the Edinburgh Festival of Indian Films & Documentaries in September in September 2016, which was visited by the celebrity Indian actor the late Om Puri. Three of these exhibitions have been made available online at www.coolitude.shca.ed.ac.uk/exhibitions in order to make them accessible to a widest possible audience. The project inspired the screen prints of Danny Flynn ('Cool!tude)'), which was included in several of these exhibitions, and informed his award-winning collaborative work 'Great Little Man - Coolitude' with Japanese bookbinder Eri Funizaki which was displayed at the Saatchi Gallery in London in February 2017. The Cool!tude screen prints further inspired Professor Reza Tavakol to author an article entitled 'Distant Gazes' which was published in Issue 28 of Uncertain States, a newspaper which charts new developments in studies of photography and which is distributed free to art galleries and museums around the UK. Collaborative art projects were undertaken at London and Leeds in 2016 with Andil Gosine of York University, Toronto and with art student Sarojini Lewis whose exposure to the research impact activities of the 'Becoming Coolies' project has informed her subsequent work as can be seen from the numerous exhibitions she has been involved with in 2017 and 2018. These include 'Notes on Migration' April-May 2017 at Mumbai, India, and 'The Waves that came from Ternate' at the Hague, Dec 2017-Feb 2018. Sarojini describes these transformative activities on her popular online blog: http://sarojinilewis.blogspot.co.uk/ and in a forthcoming publication of the research team. Many of the visitors to our project website at www.coolitude.shca.ed.ac.uk have traced their ancestry in our online database and genealogy pages, and we acquired 1,234 followers (the majority from India, secondly the UK) for our project Facebook page 'Global South Asians' in which updates on project activities were inter-woven with news event around the Indian diaspora. All of these posts have been tweeted and many have been re-tweeted and re-posted to Facebook pages run by diasporic Indian communities. The project website also provided samples of extracts from archives visited by the project and illustrations of the life stories of successful migrants, which have been used by students. The project website has attracted more than 800 new users each year since its inception. Lectures on the themes of the research were given at major public events - including a convention celebrating the Indian Diaspora in Trinidad (by Bates) and the Edinburgh International Arts Festival (by Major). A schools project was conceived by Carter and workshops were organised with teacher Alex Costello at Park View School which led to two exhibitions in 2016 and 2017, each involving a total of 30 students; a Student Resource book on the themes of the project was also published and made available free to download. Pop-up exhibitions were twice held at Artworks, in London, each of which ran for several months. Our 'Migration and 'Coolie' Identity' exhibition and poetry reading held at Artworks, Elephant & Castle, London, on 10th October 2015 was recorded and broadcast twice by Radio On and the 'Wirebender' produced an introduction to the event which can be read and listened to here: http://www.radio-on-berlin.com/?p=5579. Contributions were made to a newsletter produced by a prominent NGO devoted to memorialising Indian indentured migration in Mauritius. PI Bates and Co-I Major both contributed essays to Open Democracy - a website which connects academic research to issues of public policy - and an essay highlighting the research of the Becoming Coolies project 'The Legacy of Indian Migration to European Colonies' was published in The Economist (2/9/2017). Recordings of lectures and discussion from the project conference held at the Nehru Memorial Library New Delhi were broadcast on Rajya Sabha TV in India. A keynote lecture given by the PI in Guwahati, Assam, was reported in local Assamese newspapers. Further public events celebrating 100 years since the abolition of Indian indentured labour were held in Surinam, Guadeloupe, Mauritius and Fiji in 2018-19, at which the findings of the 'Becoming Coolies' project were referenced. Amongst these the findings of the project were reported by Bates at an open conference on 'Forced Labour and Migration' in Lautoka, Fiji in July 2019 (see http://fijianstudies.net/wp-content/uploads/Forced-Labour-conference-call-Final-1-Sept-18.pdf). Finally,a play called 'The Great Experiment', based upon the research of the 'Becoming Coolies' project, was produced and performed in February 2020. Project members acted as historical advisors, and the play received funding from the Arts Council and the National Lottery Heritage fund. It was produced by the London-based 'Border Crossings' theatre company. It was performed @Tara_Arts, @PlaygroundW10, @CuttySark, @MuseumofLondon and @ExchangeTheatre in London. Results and Impact The interdisciplinary workshop was one of several events organised in Kolkata, intended to highlight the university's on going research on India, in collaboration with Indian partners. The workshop consisted of two sessions, in which five papers were presented and then discussed by eight leading experts. Each session was followed by questions, posed to the panellists by members of the audience (including staff and postgraduates from various institutes and departments across Kolkata). The agenda of the conference was to encourage the abandonment of conventional push-pull explanations in favour of the ethnographic study of networks and intermediaries who connected together the worker and employer. This new approach, it was proposed, is necessary to escape from old clichés and enable the rethinking of the role of women in migration in India.
Significant outcomes included requests for further participation/involvement, plans made for future activity, audience reported change in views/behaviours, and own/colleagues' reported change in views.

Results and Impact Although the focus of the conference was on South Africa, the participation of scholars beyond South Africa enabled researchers in the field of diaspora studies to reflect on broader theoretical issues in conceptualising the Indian diaspora. The conference aimed to bring together researchers and academics to engage in critical discussion on a range of themes and topics that relate to South African Indians.

The decision was made at the end of the conference to establish a centre for Indian Studies, within the University of Kwa-Zulu-Natal. Participants in the "Becoming Coolies" project were recruited. The project agenda stimulated considerable interest in the academic audience. The most significant impacts were thus requests for further participation/involvement, plans made for future activity, audience reported change in views/behaviours, own/colleagues' reported change in views, decision made or influenced, and requests for further information.

Results and Impact The 'Back to the Future: Rethinking Imperial terms in Academia' conference considered the use of the term 'coolie' in academic discourse: situating it, deconstructing it, and discussing it both as a negative stereotype of the past and a possible focus of identity formation in the future. The most significant outcomes were requests for further participation/involvement, plans made for future activity, audience reported change in views/behaviours, own/colleagues' reported change in views, decision made or influenced, and requests for further information.

The exhibition, which ran over four days, featured evocative re-renderings of nineteenth century migrant portraits taken by colonial officials. The purpose was to promote in the public mind a more positive view of Indian overseas labour migration, than has hitherto been the case. The most significant impacts included audience reported change in views/behaviours and plans made for future activity.

Results and Impact The lecture was given to an audience of approximately 60 consisting mostly of staff and undergraduate students. For security reasons the University has not had any external speakers for several years. The event therefore had quite an impact. During the talk I related my current research to broader trends within the discipline of history. The head of department commented subsequently that the lecture greatly encouraged their efforts to move away from teaching conventional national history towards social and subaltern history and the adoption of new methodologies in their research. After the event I met with students who expressed similar enthusiasm.

Results and Impact Participation in and presentations at a theatre workshop for the Great Experiment project run by Border Crossings theatre company, London. The research team contributed to discussions and presented their research findings to inform the development of a play. In a blog post, the actor and writer Rosanna Lowe reflected on the contributions of the Becoming Coolies team: "Our other incredible resource and one of the most unique parts of the process was the involvement of three eminent historians, creators of the academic research project 'Becoming Coolies', which aimed to break down some of the stereotypes of Indian indentured labourers, examining their diversity and their personal agency in migration. Initially I think we were curious and a little concerned about how an interaction between performers and historians might work, as was Professor Crispin Bates, when he declared to us over Skype: 'My fear is that this could end up as a Mauritian Les Miserables' But once in the room together, there was a great generosity in the sharing process, with the performers benefitting from the historians' extraordinary expertise and the historians delighting in the performers' ability to bring history to life in unexpected ways." The team has now applied for an AHRC Follow on Funding grant to extend the impact of the project through a collaboration with Border Crossings.
