The Ordered Universe: Interdisciplinary Readings of Medieval Science

Lead Research Organisation: Durham University
Department Name: History

Abstract

The Ordered Universe Research Project proposes a fresh, interdisciplinary examination of the 13 scientific treatises on natural phenomena by Robert Grosseteste (c.1170-1253). A noted reformer as bishop of Lincoln, political advisor, poet, theologian, philosopher, translator, and 'scientist', Grosseteste's thought marks a major turning point in western medieval intellectual history. He was able to fuse, in a remarkable way, ancient understanding of the natural world, principally that of Aristotle, with Christian learning and biblical revelation. Grosseteste's scientific works are central to this enterprise. They are his first encounter not only with Aristotle's natural philosophy, but also earlier commentaries on Aristotle from Islamic and Hebrew writers, all newly translated into Latin. In the scientific treatises Grosseteste developed his critical response to these authorities, deploying, in particular, original mathematical arguments and the evidence of his own observations of natural phenomena.
There are, however, two significant impediments to a detailed assessment of Grosseteste's scientific thought. The first is the inadequacy of the current critical edition (1912). Its editor, Ludwig Baur, knew fewer than a third of the manuscripts now catalogued (research into the manuscript tradition of the treatise On the Rainbow identified substantial additions to the text, unknown to Baur). Moreover, Baur used later manuscripts, which preserve accumulated scribal errors, many of which are sufficient to obscure Grosseteste's meaning. The second impediment to a deeper understanding of Grosseteste's scientific works is the sophistication of his conceptual mathematical frameworks. Their elucidation, crucial for both the translation and the interpretation of his works, requires more than textual analysis alone. The complex nature of his scientific texts, their taut linguistic expression, and their computational virtuosity present intellectual challenges which can only be addressed with an interdisciplinary approach.
The Ordered Universe project will do precisely this, with experts from both sciences and humanities. The core research team consists of medieval historians, linguists, palaeographers, theologians and philosophers, together with physicists, cosmologists, vision scientists, mathematicians, engineers, computer scientists and meteorologists. Through a series of collaborative research symposia, classic humanities research on the establishment of the text, its translation and interpretation, is enriched by scientific perspectives and analysis. These processes of collective translation and textual elucidation lead to genuinely interdisciplinary outputs. Grosseteste is not interpreted here with any anachronism, especially scientific; rather, the interpretative tools of humanities and scientific disciplines are used together to bring the text to life in all of its dimensions.
The proposed project builds on a pilot study and an AHRC network grant. Working collaboratively with historic texts has also generated new science, published in leading scientific journals. Co-authored with humanities scholars, these papers drew the attention of the wider scientific community and were featured in two commentaries in Nature. Similar outputs are planned here, along with three stand-alone, humanities-led, articles on the significance of Grosseteste's scientific works. The wide range of academic beneficiaries is mirrored by the potential for public dialogue and impact. The Ordered Universe will collaborate with an award-winning widening participation scheme for university entrance, to create a module on Grosseteste's scientific world with material drawn from project research. A series of 16 public workshops in the UK, Europe and North America, with video record and an active website, will emphasise the cultural heritage of medieval science and its contemporary resonance, through presentation of one of the most dazzling minds of his generation.

Planned Impact

Two principal pathways to impact have been identified:
1) Enriching Access Routes to University: 'Access Medieval Science in Culture'
The first pathway to impact is a partnership with the award-winning 'Pem-Brooke London' and 'Pembroke North' widening participation scheme. The partnership encapsulates the imaginative approach required by initiatives for new access routes to university: arresting, challenging, conceptual and visual, and drawing on the humanities and science collaboration underpinning the Ordered Universe project. The scheme is led by its founder Dr Peter Claus, Access Fellow at Pembroke College, Oxford, and operates through an established network of school 'hubs'. Five of these will run an access module developed by the partnership for Year 11 and 12 pupils, using research generated by the project. This approach maximises outcomes for impact resources. The module will emphasise Grosseteste's science in the context of cross-cultural learning: a medieval Latin scholar inspired by Ancient Greek, Islamic and Jewish thinkers, whose thinking on natural phenomena inspires modern scientists in dialogue with humanities scholars. The impact of 'Access Medieval Science in Culture' is, in the first place, on those who become university applicants from low-application-rate schools and who do so as a result of their experience of research-led teaching. It will also involve teachers and other members of the hub school communities charged with supporting wider university access and raising aspirations.

2) Public Heritage: 'Thinking Medieval' Public Lecture and Forum Series with Media Strategy
The second proposed pathway focuses on public engagement with heritage, culture and science. The project investigators and research team will develop a programme of events open to the public and the mechanisms to monitor attendance and responses (both at events and subsequently). Thirteen public lectures are planned, at venues including Durham, Montreal, Rome (delivered in Italian), Lincoln and Oxford. These will include informal question-and-answer sessions with accompanying video and poster material as well as demonstrations of experiments discussed. Five public forums are planned, including partnerships with three cathedrals (Lincoln, Hereford and Durham), the Science Museum (London), and with the University of York's Department of Interactive Media. The forums will incorporate lecture-style presentations, followed by collaborative readings of Grosseteste's texts with participants. They will also feature new media associated with the project, principally in the form of a 3-D visualisation of the treatise 'On Light'; audience reaction will be encouraged. Impact will be measured through surveys before and after the lectures and forums, and in short video interviews. These surveys will also monitor the impact of the project on the wider understanding of mutual connections between humanities and sciences. Similar data-analysis from the Ordered Universe contribution to the 2014 Festival of Humanities revealed a wide range of experience and background amongst the 60 public participants. Of those with first degrees half were humanities-based, half science. The project will continue to develop its contacts in print, radio and television media, to promote and reflect on the lectures and forums, and on the results of the research as they emerge. Lectures and forum 'vox pops' will be captured for display on the project's website and YouTube: www.ordered-universe.com. 'Thinking Medieval' will enrich understanding of the cultural heritage of medieval science and of the intellectual legacy of the medieval period amongst public participants.

Description The current project is now beyond its funding life-cycle, though publication outputs are slated to continue for the next five years. The research team has developed its collaborative methodology of working between medieval specialists in a wide variety of different fields (History, Philology, Philosophy, Theology, History of Science, History of Medicine and Palaeography), and modern scientists (Physics, Vision Science, Engineering, Computer Engineering, Cosmology, Mathematics and Psychology). We have published an article on the evolution of our methodological practices. Work on the six volumes which form the core of the project is proceeding on schedule, with a minor delay as a result of Covid-19 and difficulties in accessing manuscripts from research libraries. After agreeing a contract with Oxford University Press, the first volume comprising three medieval treatises, 'On the Liberal Arts', 'On the Generation of Sounds' and 'The Seven Liberal Arts', was published on November 6th 2019. The volume, of 650 pages, garnered high praise in the course of peer review. With 19 contributing authors, the volume, and the five to come, are organisationally complex; but the collaborative research ethic comes into its own at this point. The second volume, featuring the treatise 'On the Sphere' will be submitted to press in July 2021. The team has also developed its scientific papers - an accepted and published paper in the Journal of the Optical Society of America on Rainbow Caustics; an accepted and published paper on Cross-modal Correspondence, and a third on phonetic recognition. All three papers draw on research developed on the scientific thought of Robert Grosseteste which forms the focus of the Ordered Universe research project. In addition chapters from team members were included in a major edited volume in 2016 on Grosseteste, Science and Religion; additional work on the educational context for Grosseteste's work has been carried out by various team members for a volume on Grosseteste and Education. A volume of essays are planned from the project conference held in Oxford in 2018, on Creativity, Philosophy, History and Scientific Imagination. Finally, the team have a joint science-humanities paper on the coherence of Grosseteste's observations on the rainbow and on his possible use of lenses in Isis - a leading History of Science journal, a paper another leading History of Science journal, Endeavour, as well as pursuing humanities papers on Grosseteste's scientific corpus taken as a whole, and his reception of Aristotle in particular.
All of these activities have shown the strength and flexibility of a collaborative research ethos which brings many disciplinary perspectives to bear on the elucidation of medieval thinker. Ordered Universe research has a significant reach into many different fields; how the research team explains its various methodologies to itself, enriches the process of engaging non-academic audiences.
Exploitation Route The research findings will be of significant relevance to the fields of medieval studies and the History of Science - Grosseteste was a very considerable thinker from the 13th century, whose scientific treatises are badly in need of a new edition, and English translation. Integrating his scientific thought into assessment of his other achievements in church reform, pastoral care, and these into the wider themes of intellectual history and the development of medieval and Early Modern science, has potential to shift long-standing narratives and perceptions. The scientific outputs will have impact in the specific fields to which they pertain: vision science and phonetics in particular. The model and collaborative methods of the project have also attracted attention, within academe, especially from Education Studies, and to the OxNet Access to University scheme. The attraction of the project to the creative arts centre has also been marked, from projection art, to multi-media sculpture, photography, film-making, and glass art, helping to transform individual artistic practice, and, in the case of the larger sound and light festivals, boosting local economies in the UK, Europe, and the USA, and helping to shape new directions for light festival programming.

Description Findings from the project have been used extensively within a group of artists who have connected with, and contacted the project. Ross Ashton and Karen Monid - Projection Artists: have both engaged with research from the project on colour, light, the rainbow, the creation of the universe and on comets, to create sound and light shows for Lumiere Durham (2015), Berlin Light Festival (2016), Cambridge e-Luminate (2017 and 2018), the Night of Heritage Light in Oxford (2017) as well as further consultancy and connection with the Ordered Universe for a project at York Minster (June 2018) which was repeated in October 2019. In 2019 a new show was developed with Ordered Universe input for the Napa Lighted Art Festival, California USA, and the Light Up Poole Festival in the UK. The economic impact of the Durham Lumiere Festival and from the Napa Lighted Art Festival collected by Festival organisers indicates a considerable boost to the local economy (£8milion in the case of Durham and environs). Ordered Universe team members also advised on, and participated in, a series of public talks and interactive activities in support of the Napa Lighted Art Festival, helping to shape the future direction of the Festival as involving both artistic products and expert, accessible, talks. The Projection Studio has won two awards with work connected to the Ordered Universe project, and the Light Up Poole and Napa Lighted Art Festivals for 2019 in which team members participated also won local tourism awards. Alexandra Carr - Sculptor: has engaged with the core research project and has produced artwork deriving from the treatises on light, colour and sound in particular. She is the recipient of a Leverhulme Artist in Residence Scheme for a related project with Giles Gasper on medieval cosmology. Carr has displayed artwork deriving from Ordered Universe at the Old Post Office Creative Space in Scarborough as well as producing prints for sale. Carr spent the summer and autumn of 2017 working at Ushaw College as a Leverhulme Trust Artist in Resdience on medieval and modern cosmology. This involved extensive collaboration with the Ordered Universe project, the production of a separate series of light paintings, a sequence of four temporary installations at Pembroke College (x2), Ushaw College, and the Bowes Museum, and a major sculpture on the medieval cosmos, part of a public exhibition at Durham's Palace Green Library (2017-2018). The sculpture, Empyrean, was long-listed for the Aesthetic Art Prize, 2019. Cate Watkinson and Colin Rennie, and other glass artists at the National Glass Centre, University of Sunderland: have engaged with the core research of the project in a series of joint workshops from 2016. Outputs will be a wide range of glass and metal sculptures, and an exhibition at the National Glass Centre in Suderland, October 2017-February 2018 'Illuminating Colour'. This exhibition forms part of the Sunderland City bid for City of Culture Status in 2020. The exhibition closed on March 10th, and has been a particular sucesss, with over 100,000 visitors, commissions have been forthcoming for additional artwork from both Rennie and Watkinson, and sales of pieces within the collection. One of Rennie's pieces, Magnitudo, was selected for the final judging for the Toyama International Glass Art Prize in Japan 2018. The exhbition was used for a Channel 4 documentary on rainbows in packaged meat products, and other pieces have been used in a city-wide interface between businesses and university called 'Coding the Wall'. The exhibition and its making form a documntary film by local film producer Alan Fentiman, and photographs of the exhbition by London-based photographer Rosie Reed Gold were displayed at the Cambridge e-Luminate Festival in 2018. Parts of the Illuminating colour exhibition toured to Oxford as 'Light Embodied' from April-June 2018, which featured work by Carr, Rennie, Watkinson and Reed Gold, as well as PhD and MA students from the National Glass Centre, all inspired by Ordered Universe research. As a result of connections developed within Ordered Universe, Watkinson and Rennie have begun a collaboration with the Earth Sciences Department at Durham University on glass and volcanology, stemming from two workshops organised under the aegis of Ordered Universe and the National Glass Centre on Grosseteste's treatise 'The Impressions of the Elements' and bubble formation. In addition the project forms part of an innovative access to university education scheme, Oxnet. The project provides course content for summer schools at Oxford and school-based courses in Sunderland. The aim of the scheme is to raise aspiration for university access; the role of the project to show the wide range of applications for learning and education in an interdisciplinary environment. The Ordered Universe part of this scheme opened in July 2017, as the main theme for the OxNet summer school. The regional hub at Sunderland launched in late 2017 launched, with an Ordered Universe inspired and delivered seminar course, taught in Sunderland, with the hub school at Southmoor Academy, and five additional schools in the region, over the course of 2018, a residential Easter School in Durham on medieval manuscripts and modern cosmology, and a residential summer school in Oxford, July 2018, where students analysed treatises in the collaborative spirit of the project, producing essays and posters after collective and individual sessions. The results from the first cohort will be tracked in terms of university entry, and the cohort contacted during their university courses for an assessment of the impact of the Ordered Universe access course. Cohorts for 2018/19 and 2019/20 have followed the same pattern, but with engagement from more schools in the North-East. Survey results from students indicate a very high level of cohort interest and engagement. Southmoor Academy won, in 2019 Best School in the National Social Mobility Awards, which featured the OxNet/Ordered Universe programme. For the 2019/20 cohort the decision was taken for the Easter School to run it as an online programme. This proved successful and was adopted as a model for the wider OxNet programme. For 2020/21 the whole scheme is online which means the cohort is not drawn solely from the North-East of England but from across the UK. Ordered Universe has begun to attract wider impact as well. The PI was approached by representatives from Hereford Cathedral in early 2019 to develop teaching package for the Cathedral's education and outreach unit, and in particular for students at the new university of Hereford whose first cohort commences in August 2019. The new university is based on Engineering, the Cathedral has been approached to provide courses on local history and ethics; Ordered Universe was approached with a view to helping the formation of material in this respect. Ordered Universe research has been cited in a number of literary and educational contexts as well, in Joanna Kavenna's novel A Field Guide to Reality, and in Words Beyond Numbers by Johnny Ball.
