Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic this has not taken placed. Latin American Art Curator at Tate Gallery attended the exhibition and had the chance to speak to the young participants and see their work. The project was reported in the local media.

Title	Cartoneras Art Books by Young Latin Americans in London
Description	As part of the Cartoneras Creative Engagement Project developed in partnership with the Latin American Youth Forum from the Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation, the young participants worked on the creation of individual art books made out of cardboard and recycled materials. The books explore notions of community, identity, and language. The idea was to publish the voices of young Latin Americans in London as the UK was preparing to exit the EU. The participants created 15 different art books and a collective tapestry about their creative journey and experiences. The collection was exhibited at different events in 2019.

Impact	New partnerships were created after this project. The participants were invited to attend other projects in London and their work has been deemed by the organisation as their "identity card". The Latin American Youth Forum s a youth-led initiative for young people to become more actively involved in their community. LAYF aims to help participants to maximise their potential and move into education, training and/or employment. The project enabled the participants (many of whom had just arrived in the UK) to express themselves in a creative way in a safe space, had an impact on their mental health and wellbeing, and helped them to discover their creative side, practice their language skills and feel more confident, develop a sense of belonging and community. Participants were aged 13-16 years old. Southwark Council invited the organisation to exhibit at the Council's foyer.

Title	I am Waiting For You [Arabic title: Wasafuli al-Sabr]
Description	'I am Waiting For You' (Wasafuli al-Sabr) is an original play that I wrote and is the first dramatic staging of Arab women's experience of cancer. Based on interviews I conducted with real-life female cancer patients from the Arab world, the play explores women's cancer from the inside out. What does it feel like to 'have' - or be had by - cancer? How does it impact upon one's relationship with oneself and with others - doctors, husbands, lovers, children, fellow sufferers? Why is women's cancer so often defined as a period of interminable waiting with neither beginning nor end? Why do we insist on perceiving it as "end-of-life" narrative rather than a journey towards recovery?

Impact	In the first series of events, the play performed both to the general public at a leading theatre in Beirut and later to healthcare practitioners and medical students at the Lebanese American University Medical-Center-Rizk hospital in Beirut, thus marking the first occasion upon which Arab adult theatre has been performed at a hospital. In the second set of events the play performed at the Naef K. Basile Cancer Institute of the American University of Beirut Medical Centre to mark World Cancer Day and as the opening ceremony for their Annual Breast Cancer Conference. The performance at a major cancer institute which plays a key role in medical education and care in the region was significant as it allowed us to perform to over 200 national and international physicians. Overall, the initial significance of the impact can already be noted in the huge media interest that the various performances have generated. Both the director and the writer (myself) were interviewed 11 times on national and regional TV and once on Arabophone American TV and a Francophone Arab radio. In some cases, the interviews were accompanied by clips from the play, interviews with the audience and commentary on the significance of the play. So far, the play has been very positively reviewed in 15 national and regional newspapers and online magazines. In addition, there were short pieces and commentaries in various other media outlets. *Some of the reviews described the play as follows: 'taboo-breaking'; 'De-demonizes Arab women's cancer'; 'The piece participates in a profound humanitarian mission: to clarify, to console and to calm'; 'An excellent work of theatre of information, of transparency and of therapy'. So far, feedback from cancer patients, emails from oncologists, NGO's and cancer support groups indicate that the performance has had a positive impact on cancer patients, oncologists, cancer NGO's and support groups. In sum, the impact that has resulted from this performance is as follows: 1. Break the taboo in the Arab world surrounding cancer on the one hand and female illness on the other. 2. Give public voice to female cancer patients, highlighting their subjective experiences with the disease and their affective response to oncologists and their clinical practice. 3. Produce and extend new themes, contexts and questions in the fields of the dramatic and performing arts in the Arab world. The staged performance of cancer accounts has crossover impact and will enhance creative outputs. 4. Address the need for support networks/groups for Arab cancer patients. 5. The collaboration with a practice-based Lebanese theatre director as well as with professional actors from the Arab world has stimulated and enhanced cross-national and international exchange and knowledge transfer. 6. The performance and the Q and A have opened channels of networking between cancer patients across the Arab world and potentially link their narrative experiences to patients in other cultures. The cast are from different parts of the Arab world. 9. Raise funds for SAID Cancer NGO's.

Impact	The project provided skills development for the young people involved, in some cases leading them to be able to subsequently document the revolution later that year. The group produced 13 short films that allowed them to reflect on the continuing legacy of Lebanon's violent past on their experience of society today. Description	In collaboration between researchers at the IMLR and the theatre group Foreign Affairs, an original play was devised on the basis of archival holdings at the School of Advanced Study (University of London) of play scripts, letters etc relating to the Austrian Exile Theatre 'Laterndl'.

Title	Sin Fronteras Zine
Description	As an output of the Sin Fronteras creative leadership programme (see engagement activities), participants produced a series of creative outputs (primarily multilingual poetry) which were published in a Zine produced at the end of the programme. In the Zine, participants mix languages and media, drawing freely and creatively on their range of linguistic and non-linguistic resources, and creating a space in which they were able to express their translingual identities and use these multiple forms of expression as a tool for change.

Description	CLD research on multilingualism complemented policy initiatives that focus on Britain's global influence when addressing the importance of language skills, by emphasizing the relevance of language to the delivery of key services, and appreciation of cultural diversity, heritage, and production. The research examines how public services structure language provisions, the role of agency and actor networks in shaping them, and the efficiency of data collection tools to assess language needs. Outputs include piloting a School Language Survey to supplement the DfE's School Census element on language; an online Language Data Mapping Tool that triangulates datasets from various sources; and a support platform for community-run supplementary language schools. The School Language Survey and Data Tool constitute a project legacy that will equip relevant sectors with new standards of good practice to assess language needs and raise awareness of language diversity. Both tools are being considered for replication in cities as well as Manchester, including Berlin, Moscow, Melbourne, and Sydney. Our team led deliberations with the Office for National Statistics accompanied by a public campaign to amend the Census question on language and align England & Wales with other countries with an English-speaking majority whose census questions on language seek to picture language diversity. The campaign received support from local authorities, parliamentarians, and The British Academy, and ONS reflected the team's input in its accompanying respondent guidance notes. The Supplementary School support platform launched in Manchester in 2017 has raised public awareness of the needs of community language schools and assisted with staff training and curriculum enrichment. Our team's testimony to a Manchester City Council committee has led the council to change its supplementary school engagement strategy; this is providing a national model for accreditation of Britain's community language skills and multilingual heritage. The engagement events have shaped a city language diversity narrative, which has been adopted by the local government, key service providers, cultural institutions and community groups, who have incorporated the phrase 'city of 200 languages' into their motto for community cohesion. Manchester has adopted UNESCO International Language Day as an annual celebration, forming a coordination group with MLM. An advisory report published online on 17 March 2020 recommends teacher training modules to raise awareness of sociolinguistic variation in community languages and equip teachers to deal with spoken varieties as part of the curriculum. It also calls on academics to engage with practitioners to raise public awareness of supplementary schools and to develop policies and pedagogical approaches to support them. Carlos Scolari (from the Pompeu Fabra University - Barcelona), José Antonio Cordón-García (from the University of Salamanca), Daniel Escandell-Montiel (from Manchester Metropolitan University) coordinated the three sections that make up this volume. I contributed a chapter dedicated to digital writing: teaching-learning strategies in digital environments. The volume, entitled Lectoescritura Digital, can be downloaded free of charge. Description	Citizens Translation Training Project with the Latin American community in London

PI Contribution	Following some of the recommendations made on the report Lemme Hablar: Community Engagement and the Latin American Community in Southwark (2020), I approached Professor Federico Federici from the Centre for Translation Studies at University College London, the Latin American Women's Rights Service and the Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation, to test out a project on community translation in London. The proposed project aimed to build translation capacity amongst the Latin American community. Based on Federici's experience and expertise in running similar projects in countries such as Sierra Leone and New Zealand, I proposed to Federici that we co-organise a similar pilot project in London. I contributed to the organisation and implementation of the project.

Impact	One of the key findings from my research report to Southwark is that there was a clear need to develop a culturally-informed engagement strategy to specifically target the Latin American community and tailor interventions according to population, gender, labour circumstances, and language. Access to key information in the main community languages (Spanish and Portuguese) was recommended as a strategic priority in the Council's approach to migrant communities, and in the promotion of equality and accessibility. In considering legally protected characteristics, such as race/ethnicity, my report makes a clear case about how language cannot be disassociated from such characteristics when working with minority ethnic and migrant communities. The need for translation became even more evident and urgent during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. This project aimed to pilot a translation training within the Latin American community to support capacity building within the borough. The pilot project aims to serve as a case study in the borough.

It also facilitated an audience composed of national and intrenational physicians, cancer patients, medical staff and students at NKBCI-AUBMC. aS A RESULT, the dramatic arts was able to enter into dialogue with the medical community at NKBCI-AUBMC.

PI Contribution	The collaboration was within the project of the Royal Collection exhibition 'Russia, Royalty and the Romanovs'. (The Queen's Gallery in London and at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh). My role in the collaboration was to organise a Dashkova Day within the programme of events of the Exhibition. The purpose of the Dashkova Day was to disseminate knowledge to the exhibition visitors about the Russian-British cultural connections since the eighteenth century and about the legacy of Princess Ekaterina Dahskova, the prominent Russian cultural and academic figure who lived in Edinburgh from 1776 to 1779 and was closely connected with the University of Edinburgh and Holyrood Palace. The full day of events took place on 16 October 2019 and included a series of the guided tours of Edinburgh University's collection of Catherine the Great's commemorative medals which Dashkova gifted to the University, and my public lecture at the Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse, entitled 'The Russian Diaspora'.

PI Contribution	The Latin American network in Southwark emerged organically from my action-research on community engagement and the Latin American community in London. The network was initially conceived to increase representation, support service provision, and facilitate a closer and more sustainable relationship between the Latin American community and Southwark Council. Back in 2018, Southwark Council and I approached Community Southwark to start discussing the possibility of developing a Latin American network in the borough. In July 2018, Community Southwark began co-developing and co-facilitating the Latin American cross-sector network in Southwark. At its initial stage, the Latin American network brought together the local government (Southwark Council), third-sector (Latin American organisations, stakeholders and providers of services for the Latin American community in Southwark and neighbouring boroughs) and public organisations (University of London, Public Health Southwark, HIV Commission Lead and CCGs).The network was based on Community Southwark's existing network model known as "Provider Led Group/Network" (PLG). PLGs were designed to encourage peer support between communities and organisations of different sizes and stages of development and are facilitated by Community Southwark to ensure that the groups were plugged in, joined-up and could get their messages across to opinion formers and decision-makers. I have led and coordinated the network in partnership with Southwark Council and Community Southwark from July 2018 to October 2020, and I continue supporting the network on an advisory role. I have also facilitated and chaired meetings.
Collaborator Contribution	Southwark Council, Community Southwark and the Latin American organisations in Southwark have played a vital role in the development of the network. They have participated actively in the network's building-process, and considers the network an important tool and space for relationship building and collaboration. Community Southwark is now leading the network.
Impact	The Latin American Network in Southwark has met 9 times between 2018 and 2020. During the COVID-19 outbreak, the Latin Network in Southwark member organisations were signatories to a letter the Coalition of Latin Americans in Southwark wrote to Public Health England raising concerns about the statistical invisibility of the Latin American community and the need to include it in the Government's review on the impact of COVID-19 on BAME communities.

Collaborator Contribution	Digital Technologies experts at the Manchester Museum set up an online platform in 2020 that brought the idea of storied translation to life. It was piloted between July 2020 and January 2021, and launched to the wider public as part of the International Mother Language Day celebrations in February 2021.

PI Contribution	We provided an opportunity for Oxygen FIlms - a young filmmaking organisation based in Leeds that focuses on Youth and LGBTQI+ rights in particular - an opportunity to partner with University of Leeds on a protest film workshop, and work with international activist filmmakers Dakxin Bajrange and Daniela Westogrek. We raised awareness of Oxygen Films work through in-university marketing of the event and project managed the delivery of the resulting partnership event, also in partnership with Leeds International Film Festival.
Collaborator Contribution	Oxygen Films - in collaboration with LIFF - led on marketing and recruitment of young filmmakers across Leeds to take part in the project. They also advised us on approach and structure of the workshop from a youth-focused capacity.

Collaborator Contribution	Vilma presented invaluable knowledge, experience and narrative from an indigenous community perspective to the university at this event. Vilma also presented a separate event for Spanish language undergraduate students during her visit.
Impact	During this visit they also made plans for future activity through the development of a AHRC Research Networking bid worth £60,000 called "Sumak Kawsay and the Sustainable Development Agenda: Critical Debates and Creative Responses from a Latin American Indigenous Perspective".

He also spoke about his work to a group of postgraduates whilst in Leeds. This was the first time they had met in person, and also allowed Sebastian to meet others relevant to his field of work and advocate for his values. Further to discussions and planning during Sebastian's visit, Dr. Pitman applied for a BA/Leverhulme small research grant (£10,000) to work on an indigenous art project with Thydewa. She has also supported Thydewa to submit 2 of their own funding applications (one for EUR 1.9 million from the European Commission, and another for $40,000 from the Intercultural Innovation Award (UNAOC).
Collaborator Contribution	Sebastián contributed greatly to discussion and knowledge sharing throughout the seminar. Thydewa has enabled Dr. Pitman to work with new communities in new ways through the application of collaborative grants.

PI Contribution	Developing World Cinema Audiences In collaboration with Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle, the Durham-based team of researchers, led by Dušan Radunovic (and including Andy Byford, Qing Cao, Anoush Ehteshami, Abir Hamdar and Francisco-J. Hernández Adrián), is developing programmes that deploy World Cinema as a mode and means of confronting and debating some of the critical issues facing the contemporary world. Our flagship collaborative enterprise in the context of the Open World Research Initiative is the nine-day festival, What's Left? A Century in Revolution, which takes place at the Tyneside Cinema between Friday 29 September and Sunday 8 October 2017. Marking the centenary of the Russian Revolution of 1917, this series of daily screenings and discussions examines the paradoxes of revolutionary cycles across the 20th and 21st centuries: their progressions and regresses, advances and returns to origins. Our focus is especially on the global reach and transnational interrelatedness of these events, moving from Latin America to the Middle East, from China to the former Soviet Union, from North Africa to Europe. While rooted in history, the festival's emphasis is on the significance of revolution today. Pursuing a non-nostalgic, critical approach to the meanings and enactments of revolution, the programme goes beyond commemoration. In recognition that revolutionary transformations acquire meaning in and through the lives of ordinary people, the films shown and discussed exemplify, each in their own way, the intimate interlocking of personal and historical time. Emphasis is also placed on the link between moving image and political action. New visual media and technologies are examined as vehicles of revolutionary change, as means for creating a novel aesthetic of political radicalism, and as a fundamentally new lens for both experiencing and making history.
Collaborator Contribution	Tyneside Cinema in association with Cross-Language Dynamics (OWRI) and supported by the AHRC presented a special programme of film, visual art and discussions to mark the occasion of the centenary of the Russian Revolution of 1917. The programme ran at the Tyneside from Friday 29 September to Sunday 8 October 2017. It was curated by the Durham OWRI team, with Dušan Radunovic as lead curator, together with Úna Henry, as curator on behalf of Tyneside Cinema.

The workshop addressed the core research questions of the 'Global Russians' project, focusing on the notion of the 'Global Russian' and the identities and imaginaries of the Russophone community in the UK. A particular value of this event was that it brought together and created a productive dialogue between academics who provided a critical examination of the way in which the Russian community in the UK is imagined, and representatives of the creative professions engaged in the production of cultural organisations, events and artefacts that feed these imaginaries. The sktakeholder's contribution included a) a roundtable on 'The Role of British Cultural Institutions and Creative Professions in Shaping and Interpreting Londongrad'. The roundtable focused on the topics of 'media' and 'childhood' and featured the following speakers: Roman Borisovich of the documentary 'From Russia with Cash', Alexander Kan of the BBC Russian Service, Karina Karmenian of the Russian Children World organisation in London, and Anna Edovina and Pavel Iosad from the PTA of the Russian School in Edinburgh. b) a reading of the play 'Tate Modern' by Iulia Savikovskaia (Oxford University). The topics of her research and writing overlap and speak to each other, both of them being concerned with Russians in the UK and their life stories. The reading was performed by Edinburgh-based Russian-speaking actors: Ksenia Ivleva, Wiera Szczurewska, Ivan Rybtsov and Stanislav Rybtsov. Savikovskaya gave a presentation of her play, which raised a lively discussion including the questions of the acting techniques and textual means of representation of longing, separation, loneliness, clash of cultures and the sense of home and homelessness, depicted in this beautiful and complex work.

Results and Impact	The conference focused on the theme of subversion in Latin American literature. I presented a paper on a panel entitled 'Subverting Language' and my paper focused on the creation and emergence of parlache, an urban rhetoric spoken in Colombia, and the manners in which it deterritorialises and transforms standard Castilian in order to represent the realities of a growing proportion of Colombian citizens who feel neglected and overlooked by dominant society. My paper gave rise to debates, questions and further information was solicited regarding the idea of minor languages, the deterritorialisation of language and the manners in which this act challenges societal hierarchies and the concepts of belonging to a nation.

Results and Impact	I presented a paper at the 'Travelling in 20th and 21st Century Latin America Conference', organised by the University of Bristol on the 5th October 2018. My paper analysed the manners in which author Santiago Gamboa deals with the ideas of intercultural contact, engages in a discussion surrounding the understanding of 'difference' and the authenticity of words and narratives. Significant discussion took place after my presentation where fellow academics and postgraduate students asked for further information and enquired about the OWRI project. I was approached by a fellow presenter and asked to submit an article based on my presentation to a Special Edition of The Journal of Romance Studies entitled 'National and Transnational Origins and Destinations' which is due to be released in 2022.

Stanley Kubrick's producer Jan Harlan was present and he claimed that Stanley 'would have liked' my paper. I got people talking not just about Nadsat but about Anthony Burgess's multilingualism and how that shapes some of his other fiction, in particular the Malay Trilogy.

Results and Impact	The activity was timed to coincide with the City of Literature programme of celebrations for International Mother Language Day (IMLD) 2021. It involved a two-hour online event with presentations and audience Q&A. Presentations provided insight into the work of Multilingual Manchester (University of Manchester) across the city in relation to previous editions of IMLD, and also launched the new collaborative online translation platform developed by Multilingual Manchester and the Manchester Museum under the OWRI project. Supplementary and mainstream school representatives who contributed to the piloting of the platform also contributed to the Q&A, showing how work on the platform had been incorporated into school curriculum activity and helped to valorise the many languages spoken by children in Manchester. Grassroots organisations also reported starting to engage with the platform through family-based interactions.

Results and Impact	I was invited to present my research for the project at the AHRC network workshop 'Born-digital data for History and the Humanities: The challenges of collaborative research'. The network brings together both researchers and practitioners from organisations such as the National Archives, and consequently it was an opportunity to reach a wider audience engaged in researching, curating and creating digital archives and resources. My presentation on 'Digital Humanities and Modern Languages: Researching and representing language communities in the UK Web Archive' led to significant discussion and interest in the linguistically sensitive approach to research relating to digital technologies and media which I presented.

Results and Impact	Brixton Reel Film Festival is a mental wellbeing project set up to engage with hard-to-reach, socially excluded and often lower-income BAME communities. The film festival has built strong bonds with individual community partners and local mental health service providers, and uses film and arts in a fun way to engage community members who may otherwise view mental health, or mental health services, with fear, shame or other social stigmas. The festival's 2018 edition focused on the seldom heard stories of mental wellbeing by BAME communities in London. In partnership with Brixton Reel Festival, Southwark Council and Voces Amigas de la Esperanza (VOADES, previously TEUK), the OWRI/IMLR funded a series of events for the Latin American community in London. The film festival began with a premiere event designed to coincide with World Mental Health Day (10 October),and the main festival took place from the 8th to 15th November 2018. The festival was preceded by an evening celebrating young Latin Americans and wellbeing, in association with Thrive LND Culture and the Latin American mental health and wellbeing charity Voces Amigas de la Esperanza (VOADES). The event took place at La Bodeguita Restaurant in Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre. The event aimed to raise awareness about mental health in migrant communities, and screened powerful testimonials of young Latin Americans in London who spoke about their experiences of invisibility, how migration affected them, the strategies they used to deal with mental health issues, and the support they got from their social networks, and organisations such as VOADES. The programme also included a film screening of Colombian film Virginia Casta at the emblematic Cinema Museum. The event was attended by 80 people. There was Latin American food and attendees enjoyed a salsa masterclass after the screening.

Join in this workshop at the wonderful Migration Museum to learn about this empowering cultural phenomenon and see how the model is used to engage young Latin Americans in South London. A presentation by researchers Lucy Bell (University of Surrey) and María Soledad Montañez (School of Advanced Study) was followed by a hands-on workshop where participants tried their hand at making their own cardboard book. Results and Impact	I chaired a panel session at the What's Left: A Century in Revolution Festival which was held at the Tyneside cinema in Newcastle. The panel, entitled 'Beyond the Political: Cinema of the Real' took place following the screening of the Syrian documentary Silvered Water. It featured guest speakers Malu Halasa (London-based journalist and author of the book Syria Speaks), Robin Yassin Kassab (Scotlandbased Syrian writer) and Lina Khatib (Chatham House and SOAS, University of London). The audience included local cinema audiences and Syrian refugees from Durham, Chester-le-Street and Aycliff. The panel sparked a conversation between the refugees and the audiences present and enabled the former to share and reflect on their experiences of the revolution and conflict in Syria.

Results and Impact	Film Festival took place on 1-5 June. The idea behind the online event was that several CTS projects had produced film outputs/youth-led film outputs, from the Izazov project in BiH, Participatory Arts for Health Improvement in India, Ilizwi Lenyaniso Lomhlaba, connective memories (Rwanda). The film festival is a way of bringing those films out puts together, celebrating film as a medium for advocacy/activism. Submissions were open to the GCRF portfolio. To submit the film each filmmaker was asked to submit a short film introducing their film, why they made it and who they wanted to see it - useful so that we could get the dissemination of the films right. 30 films submitted from across the AHRC-GCRF portfolio. Films were submitted by filmmakers based in India, Cambodia, Italy, Kenya, South Africa, Kosovo, Ghana, Lebanon, UK, Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Colombia, Rwanda. Films about heritage, conflict, displacement, mental health, substance addiction, education, sexual violence, LGBTQI+, historic and modern slavery, human trafficking. The festival was shared widely online and Twitter was a particularly effective tool to promote the festival. The Festival was retweeted by BBC Arts (over 45K followers), ARHC (45K followers), MEP (26K), Hyde Park Picture House (16K), LIFF (16K), Culture Action Europe (16K), UNESCO UK (6K), Bradford City of Film (9K), the British Ambassador and Italian Ambassador to BiH, film director Javier Osuna, organisations working across the borders of arts and culture such as Border Crossings, Counterpoint. Twitter Analytics: 61.4K impressions over a 5 day period (the number of times a user saw a tweet). If you compare this to a 28 day period we received 119K impressions so roughly half of which took place within a 5 day period. An increase in engagement by 2.7%, 394 links clicked (an average of 79 per day), 109 retweets, 266 likes Over 1000 votes were submitted. Q&A - 60 attendees. Panellists included young filmmakers from the connective memories project, Izazov, Ilizwi Lenyaniso Lomhlaba. Young filmmakers from CTS facilitated conversations with the filmmakers who submitted films to the festival. Panel 1: CTS PHD student, Panel 2: Ilizwi Lenyaniso Lomhlaba and Panel 3 young filmmaker from Izazov. Fascinating to hear young people from around the world talk to each other about their artistic work, their contexts, their experiences and that is something were going to explore more over the summer. We are going to explore ways of connecting young people from across the CTS network and of providing space for dialogue that is shaped/information by young people from the projects around an artistic stimulus. Filmmaker from the CTS Izazov project was awarded the Gold Audience Choice Award. Filmmaker from the CTS Participatory Arts for Health Improvement in Northern India was awarded the Silver Audience Choice Award. As a result the filmmaker had two articles written about their film in state newspaper and has an opportunity to speak at a mental health symposium organised by the state government in Nagaland. The format of the Q&A has influenced CTS' future youth engagement plans including the FOAR2000 project.

New challenges for planning and policies took place on 19 January 2018 in Gorizia/Nova Gorica, at the Italian-Slovenian border, in collaboration with the Slovenian Research Institute. The conference provided an opportunity to discuss language contact and policies in border communities and language policies in multilingual regions. Knowledge and good practice was shared across policy makers, teachers, postgraduate students, academics and the general public. The conference attracted media attention and was covered by the national evening news in Slovenia.

Results and Impact	Our project in Southwark with the Latin American community considered that creativity plays a vital role in transformative and effective community engagement processes and practices in cross-cultural contexts. Accordingly, we tried to find alternative and complementary solutions to existing and more traditional ways of engagement within a super-diverse context. Creative practice offers the opportunity to (re)connect with diverse communities through multiple media and languages, allowing alternative methods of communication and understanding. The Cartoneras Creative Engagement Project was a collaborative effort between two different AHRC projects in England - namely the OWRI's Cross Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community from the Institute of Modern Languages Research, University of London and Cartonera Publishing: Relations, meaning and community in movement, the British Library - and a group consisting of the Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation (IRMO), Southwark Council and the Migration Museum. 43 Cartoneras (Cardboard Publishing) is a unique grassroots Latin American publishing phenomenon, which offers alternative forms of community engagement, activism, and social change. The project took placed in May 2019 and aimed to explore notions of community, identity, and language through a series of workshops, from creative writing to book making. The idea was to publish the voices of young Latin Americans in London as the UK was preparing to exit the EU. It included three different public outreach events: a. Cartoneras Book Making Workshop at the British Library b. Cartoneras Final Exhibition at PemPeople, Peckham. c. Cartoneras in London: Untold Stories from Latin America as part of the Being Human Festival in partnership with the Migration Museum, IRMO, University of Surrey and Southwark Council. The Cartoneras project has been deemed by IRMO Senior Programme Manager as the organisation's identity card: "The new contacts made during the project have been fruitful. [] Cartoneras facilitated the involvement of the young people in the planning and consultation to develop new projects, contributing to make them feel more invested in the programme and giving them more opportunities to work with new partners and to explore new spaces and ways of work".

Results and Impact	In June/July 2020 we ran a series of virtual doctoral research seminars as part of the Digital Modern Languages seminar series (jointly organised by the Cross-Language Dynamics and Language Acts & Worldmaking OWRI projects. The aim was to provide a forum for doctoral researchers to present and receive feedback on their work in a supportive environment, particularly at a time when such opportunities may be more limited than in normal circumstances due to the pandemic. Speakers and audience members included researchers from across the globe (e.g. Italy, the UK, Turkey and the US), and the series helped to support the wider series aim of fostering a stronger research community of languages researchers who engage with digital culture, media and technologies.

Results and Impact	Researchers on the project collaborated with the Language Acts and Worldmaking project on the 'Disrupting Digital Monolingualism' virtual workshop where speakers from across the world - including representatives from 6 different continents - discussed how we challenge existing anglophone models of digital culture and technology. Addressing themes such as decolonising the Internet and the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and linguistic and cultural diversity, the workshop highlighted the forms of exclusion and marginalisation that the monolingual bias in the digital world can reinforce. Reports from the event were published on the website and have led to ongoing collaborations with those involved.

Results and Impact	To coincide with the official European Day of Languages, the IMLR and Cross-Language Dynamics project collaborated with SOAS's World Languages Institute at a public event aimed at celebrating the rich linguistic diversity of Europe and explicitly highlighting the presence and value of the languages of individuals and communities who have migrated from all over the world. The Cross-Language Dynamics project contributed to the day's programme with the invited screening of a documentary on the Somali-Dutch community in the city of Birmingham (Africa is You. The Somali-Dutch Community in Birmingham, UK, directed by Linde Luijnenburg, Ahmed Magare, Dennis Mulder and Anna Van Winden, BrollB Productions 2016). The screening was followed by a Q&A session with two of the documentary makers, Linde Luijnenburg and Ahmed Magare, as well as Mohammed Artan who founded and manages the Looh Press publishing company. The event also included poetry readings by Ahmed Magare and Aisha Afrah. The screening and readings stimulated significant discussion between the panel and audience, focusing in particular on one of the key questions underpinning the Cross-Language Dynamics project, that of whether and how the languages we speak define the communities we align with. The screening was attended by around 30 people, and included a broad public of Somali community members, practitioners with an interest in documentary making, as well as academic researchers, and postgraduate and undergraduate students.

Results and Impact	This workshop was organised in collaboration with the AHRC Translating Cultures Theme (represented by Prof Charles Forsdick) and was aimed at an audience of active Modern Languages researchers and teachers in Higher Education. Through a series of invited panel presentations and discussions with experienced and early career researchers, the event provided a forum to critically reflect on the position of ethnographic approaches and methods within Modern Languages research and teaching. The event brought together researchers from Translating Cultures and the broader Open World Research Initiative, including the AHRC Leadership Fellow for Modern Languages Prof Janice Carruthers, to highlight the transformative AHRC-funded ethnographically influenced research currently being conducted within Modern Languages. At the same time, connections were made with researchers from earlier projects (most notably the ESRC-funded 'Language Learners as Ethnographers' from the 1990s) in order to highlight earlier pioneering work to transform the Modern Languages curriculum within universities. The event was oversubscribed (reaching maximum capacity of 45 people), and speakers and audience members commented that the workshop made them newly aware of the presence of ethnographic research and teaching across Modern Languages. In addition, new connections were made between Modern Languages scholars active in this area, and attendees have since confirmed that the workshop has acted as an impetus for new plans to incorporate a greater use of ethnographic methods and theories into their own teaching and/or research. In collaboration with Charles Forsdick, we have also developed a draft statement summarising the core messages and desired future outcomes from the workshop which we have circulated to those who attended for initial consultation, and which is intended to lead to future publications and activities which put into practice the transformative potential of ethnographic theories and practices in relation to how we approach Modern Languages teaching and research across HEIs in the UK.

Results and Impact	Cartonera is a contemporary publishing phenomenon with origins in South America that lies at the intersection between cultural trend and social movement, artistic intervention and community project. These 'cardboard publishers' are united by the material from which they make their books: recycled cardboard. OWRI/IMLR funded a free public workshop on 17 May at the British Library to launch their collaborative creative community engagement with young Latin Americans in South London. The workshop was an opportunity to find out more about the origins and developments of this movement, as well as an opportunity to view the British Library's own collection of cartonera. There is even a practical session where you can try your hand at creating a cartonera book. The event included a talk by Dr Lucy Bell (University of Surrey) and Dr Alex Flynn (UCL) who lead an academic research project focusing on the literary and creative outputs of Cardboard publishers. The event supported in collaboration with Rahul Bery, the British Library's current Translator in Residence, and curator Dr Beth Cooper. This event launched a cartonera workshop initiative led by María Soledad Montañez (OWRI/IMLR) involving a range of partners engaging with the Latin American community in South London. The project aimed to explore ideas of identity at the time of political uncertainty, while at the same time offering young participants the opportunity to learn new skills, such as creative expression, design and book making.

Results and Impact	The INSET "Using Video Games and Storytelling in Language Teaching and Learning" was held on Saturday 10 November 2018 at Manchester Metropolitan University. The INSET aimed to engage language teachers (particularly GCSE tutors on activities based on the use of video games. This INSET event is aimed at teachers of French and Spanish working in Sixth Forms and Colleges, specifically year 9 and 10, but if can be applied to A Levels students. It is informed by the new developments in the GCSE and A Level curriculum and current research evidence. Designed as an interactive workshop, it provided a framework for introducing video games, transmedia literacy and critical analysis strategies that can help develop skills useful in Language Acquisition and Media Literacy. The resources included a range of practical activities for embedding transmedia literacy and critical thinking into the language classroom using video games. This format is particularly effective to scaffold practice of the many skills necessary for independently analysing media contents.

Results and Impact	In partnership with the Consulate of Peru in London, VOADES and Comunidad Rimanakuy, this community event was conceived and delivered by the community itself. It included a Quechua class, Andean traditional dance show and food, as well as presentations by community representatives. The event has allowed the community group to consolidate its work, delivering Quechua classes and cultural activities in partnership with the Consulate of Peru and the Institute of Latin American Studies, School of Advanced Study, and the Latin American House (which is now part of their community learning classes). Comunidad Rimanakuy is now in the process of becoming a constituted voluntary group.

Results and Impact	I was invited as a keynote speaker for the InnoConf2018 (New Trends in Language Learning and Teaching). Around 80 Higher Education lecturers and language turtors participated. The presentation, questions and discussion afterward has increased the visibility of the Transmedia project. As a resutls of this event, in partnreship with TROPO UK (the Association of Teachers and Research of Portuguese Language in the UK), we are planning an INSET on "Using Short Films Creatively in the Portuguese Language Classroom", which will be held on 6 April 2019 at Manchester Metropolitan University. The event will be part of the Extension and Engagment Activities of the Manchester Metropolitan University OWRI project.

Results and Impact	I was invited to deliver the plenary closing session for The Image Conference, an event co-organised by the Portuguese Association of English Language Teachers (ww.appi.pt), in Lisbon (Portugal), 14/11/2017. The research paper entitled 'Fostering intercultural communicative competence through film' disseminated research pursued under the Teacher training project, part of the AHRC-OWRI Cross-Language Dynamics. The Image Conference, the annual conference of the Visual Arts Circle, is an innovative and collaborative project which seeks to explore the possibilities which film, video, images and video games offer to both language teachers and language learners. The Image Conference brings together leading experts and practitioners in the use of images in language learning who share their experiences, insights and know-how and provides participants with an excellent opportunity to enhance their competence in the innovative and creative use of images. The conference further acted as a platform to promote OWRI activities and as a networking opportunity.

Results and Impact	This workshop was organised as part of the national Being Human Festival of the Humanities and was supported by a Public Engagement Innovators' grant from the School of Advanced Study (University of London). The workshop, titled 'Who tells your story? Latin America at the British Library', was run by Naomi Wells in partnership with the British Library's Latin American and UK Web Archive curators, as well as the charity and community partner Latin Elephant. The workshop was aimed at Latin Americans in the UK, with the aim of exploring collaboratively how we can shape archives and collections and use them to discover and tell our own individual and collective histories. British Library curators presented unique examples of physical items from the Library's Latin American Collections alongside 'born-digital' archival material from the UK Web Archive in order to reflect on the changing shape of archives and collections. At the same time, participants shared their own physical and digital materials of personal significance, such as diaries, music recordings, community websites or personal blogs, to explore what they would like preserved of their own histories. The workshop was fully booked, with around 20 people attending on the day, and feedback from participants and the partner organisations was extremely positive, with participants commenting on how much they had learned about the British Library's archives and collections, and their plans to return to the Library to engage in greater depth with these resources. The event is also informing the development and content of a Special Collection in the UK Web Archive of websites relating to Latin American communities in the UK, and participants and partners were keen to explore future opportunities for further activities and engagement.

Results and Impact	The London Spanish Book and Zine Fair (LSBF) was launched and organised by La Tundra Magazine and funded by the Cross-Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community project (part of the Open World Research Initiative), the Institute of Modern Languages Research and The European Bookshop. LSBF showcased books and zines published in Spanish and/or English as well as in other languages (e.g. Spanish-Japanese) mostly by publishers in the UK, Europe and Latin America. The fair gathered more than 30 exhibitors, which included small and independent publishers such as Friends of Alice Publishing, Victorina Press, El Ojo de la cultura Hispanoamericana, Newham Poetry Group, Las Juanas (Hispano-American Women on Memory), Battersea Spanish, Literary South, Flawa, Editorial Castillos De Arena and De Lujurias y Musas, as well as Zemí Books (Dominican Republic/Puerto Rico) and Flamboyant (A Spanish Publisher of children and young adults books), Vulva Fanzine, Matemates and the multinational collective Me Flipa Colectivo. Authors such Marta Querol (Spain), Marina Lomar (Spain), Sonia Quintero (Colombia), Edo Brenes (Costa Rica), Murnau den Linden (Mexico), Francesca Tiley (UK), Verónica Corral (Spain), Luis Elvira (Spain), Patricia Díaz (Colombia), Lola Llatas (Spain) Karlina Veras (Dominican Republic) and Isabel del Rio (Spain) as well as The European Bookshop and The Feminist Library. LSBF also hosted several small independent and self-published FANZINE creators and publishing houses. Jael García (LAWA/ Feminopraxis) curated 'Presencias de allá para acá', a collective space dedicated exclusively to the production of Spanish, English or bilingual fanzines exploring themes of belonging, identity, language and the global South/North interrelation. García offered a zine workshop in partnership with the Feminist Library, which was well-attended by young people. The fair delivered a diverse programme of talks and workshops in Spanish and English, such as "The situation of the Latin American writers in the UK' (La situación del escritor latinoamericano en el Reino Unido), a round table chaired by Enrique Zattara (El Ojo de la cultura Hispanoamericana), with writers Gunter Silva, Chloe Aridjis and Ana Vidal. Lucy Bell (University of Surrey) and and María Soledad Montañez (IMLR, University of London) talked about the Latin American publishing phenomenon known as Cartoneras, and the creative community engagement programme developed in South London. Talks included: Writer Marta Querol and Marina Lopez presented the talk 'Literature and Women in Spain in the XXI century' (Literatura y mujer en España en el siglo XXI). The Spanish writer and journalist Dolores Conquero presented her book "Amores contra el tiempo (Planeta, 2018) which describes the love stories of nine famous women whose partners were considerably younger than them. 'The independent comic in Latinamerica' (El cómic contemporáneo en Latinoamérica) - WithCosta Rican author Edo Brenes - Author published by Reservoir Books. (In English). 'The Bilingual Writer' talk with With Isabel del Rio (Friends of Alice Publishing) and authors Juana Adcock, Leo Boix and Karina Lickorish Quinn From the independence to mainstream in 3 years (De la independencia al mainstream en tres años) - With Murnau Den -Linden - Author published by Editorial Planeta- (In English) 'Literary Travel in the Low Cost Era' (Viajes literarios en la era de los viajes low budget) with writer and journalist Alejandro Luque - (In SPANISH) 'In conversation with Julianne Pachico', presented by Silvia Rothlisberger (Literary South). The programme was completed by a wealth of interactive workshops for families and writers, from creating a mini-story on characters from other cultures facilitated by Mabel Encinas-Sánchez and Marijo Alba-Sánchez, to a Fanzine workshop delivered by The Feminist Library's Spanish Club, to 'Flash Fiction' with Dominican writer Karlina Veras, and 'How to build a character based on the women of Latinamerican Independence' (Cómo construir un personaje basado en las mujeres de la independencia de Latinoamérica) with Patricia Díaz (London College of Communication). The fair also included an outdoor storytelling for young children charmingly delivered by Spanish writer Lola Llatas, which was based on her book 'Los misterios de Sara'. The fair closed with a poetry open mic run by the literary group Leyendo Poesía En Londres, and live music by Colombian musician Gabriel Moreno. The first edition of the book fair gathered around 400 participants from across Europe and the UK. The success of this event encouraged the develop of a second edition, which due to the COVID-19 pandemic was delivered online. "OWRI's support and grant was a great incentive for our team since, otherwise, it would have been very difficult to carry out this unique initiative without their support. It is also comforting to know that while, at the same time, OWRI has supported and promoted the work of the Spanish speaking community in the UK, and the book fair is of great interest in the UK. We hope to continue growing in future editions in order to reach new audiences" (Director of LSBF)

Results and Impact	This Being Human masterclass on 'Audiences and Partnerships' will involve both workshop activities and flash talks that will explore the best ways to engage with local communities and organisations. Covering important topics such as access and inclusion (including timely discussions around digital inequalities), the workshop will explore how to tailor events to the needs and interests of specific audiences and community partners. Organisers from last year's festival will also give flash talks that provide helpful insights and tips from their public engagement events, which included work with community groups, local councils and cultural and art organisations. The session is aimed primarily at this year's Being Human festival organisers (and those still thinking of getting involved), as well as those interested in public engagement in the humanities. Throughout there will be opportunities for everyone to discuss co-production and place-based engagement in this time of social distancing. Attendees will also be emailed a masterclass pack full of helpful information and toolkits for working with community partners and focusing on your intended audience. Workshop leaders and speakers: Professor Sarah Churchwell is the director of the Being Human festival. A prominent advocate for literature and the humanities, Sarah appears regularly in the media and writes for both academic and non-academic audiences. Dr Michael Eades is manager and curator of the Being Human festival. He also runs numerous public engagement initiatives such as 'Bloomsbury Festival in a Box' which engaged socially isolated people with dementia. Dr Bob Nicholson from Edge Hill University ran a series of popular events entitled 'We Are Not Amused!' which explored the topic of Victorian humour. He worked with comedians and in partnership with the arts venue the Atkinson to bring together he's successful programme. Dr Heather Richardson from the Open University created a bespoke event for local audiences called 'Stitches and Stories'. While creating a patchwork quilt together, attendees discussed the patchwork of neighbourhoods and communities that make up Belfast. Dr María Soledad Montañez from the Institute of Modern Languages Research worked closely with community groups in south London to create her 2019 festival event 'Cartoneras in London'. Together they explored alternative forms of community engagement, activism and social change by making cartoneras (cardboard publishing).

Results and Impact	A wellbeing workshop for young Latin Americans, facilitated by Nancy Liscano, Director of the mental health charity Voces Amigas de la Esperanza-UK, and funded by IMLR/OWRI. The workshop was organised as a complimentary event within Brixton Reel Film Festival. This interactive and multilingual workshop (Spanish, Portuguese and English) explored the ways in which young migrants construct their identities and build their self-esteem. Considering that cultural and linguistic differences play a role in the way we talk about our emotions and feelings, the multilingual workshop created a safe multilingual and multimodal space for sharing experiences about identity, mental health, migration and integration. The workshop was attended by 15 participants aged 10-21 years from six countries of birth.

Proficiency in English is one of the most significant barriers to accessing key services such as education, health, and social care services. A lack of English language skills can also result in lower wages and limited educational and employment opportunities. Access to ESOL classes is one of the main needs of the Latin American community in London and is in high demand. However, due to funding cuts in the last decade at a local and national level, English language learning providers are usually oversubscribed. Classes are generally scheduled at times unsuitable for those working in hospitality and cleaning services, and even if some classes are free and accessible, free childcare is not necessarily provided. This negatively affects women who are more likely to live in households with dependent children. Working with the Latin American Women's Rights Service, we co-created an Online English Language Course to support the organisation's Language Café. In March 2020, as part of our partnership with Southwark Council, LAWRS and the Institute of Modern Languages Research joined forces to develop an online language teaching programme for and by Latin American women in London. The course encompasses English language learning with vital information about life in the UK, and in particular in London, from practical information about how to access health services, understand the education system, to labour rights, as well as general knowledge on culture and politics, as identified by the learning community. The Language Café was initially created by LAWRS in 2017 as a Spanish and English language exchange 'café' with Paxton Green Time Bank (PGTB) in Southwark. The Café was supported by the Feminist Review Trust and led by women from LAWRS and PGTB who shared language skills and social opportunities, in an exchange called timebanking. In its current format, the Language Café offers Latin American women the opportunity to learn English in an informal, safe, and community-based learning environment. The course was developed during the COVID19 national lockdown and launched on the 13th of November 2020. 450 Latin American women registered to attend the launch of the course. At the time of writing, and four months after launching the course, the course is now starting its 5th group of students.

A video can cover different topics (cultural, social, health, traditions, individual and the society...) and has a lot of details which allow to develop students' observation and thinking as well when they will be asked to related them to other topics or things they learned. The use of videos can create an interactive class where students will ask and give their opinion and develop new ideas about the language and the topics."

Results and Impact	In collaboration with the Assocation Tropo (Teachers and Researchs of Portuguese Languages), I organised an INSET day for Portuguese language teachers on the 6 April 2019 (from 10:30 to 16:00) at Manchester Met University. 10 teachers /lecturers from schools and universities attended the event (part of the OWRI Teaching Training Project) from the following institutions: University of Liverpool, Newcastle University, Instituto Camões, The University of Manchester,OUCDE (Oxford University - Department for Continuing Education), University of Southampton, and University of Sheffield. New resources were presented and materials were adapted. The resources that are been designed in collaboration with the participants and one UG student will be avialble via the Transmedia in Education website (www.Transmediaineducation.org). The event provided an opportunity to present the project, resources and increased interest in future activities. The event received an excellent feedback. In short, all participants 'fully agreed' that (1) the workshop was interesting; (2) the workshop was intellectually stimulating; (3) they learned something useful for their L&T practice; (4) the session was well organised.The free text comments confirmed that participants were very satisfied with the event and enjoyed the opportunity to learn about films for language teaching and to network with other teachers of Portuguese.

Results and Impact	On 16 October 2019, I delivered an invited lecture entitled 'The Russian Diaspora' at the 'Russia, Royalty and the Romanovs' Exhibition, The Queen's Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh. According to the Learning Curator of the Royal Collection, the lecture generated increased interest in the subject, higher levels of attendance to the exhibition, and positive feedback from visitors. According to my observations, the audience was very engaged, as demonstrated by them taking an extra 40 minutes for questions and discussion of the topic.

My paper concentrated on space and time and especially on the function of translingual writing in her short novel Das ueberirdische Licht. Ca. 4o people attended the conference (postgraduates, other academics and members of the general public). There were lively debates and the day concluded with a reading by Honigmann from her most recent novel, Georg (published in January 2019). A conference volume will be published in due course. The talk - and indeed the whole symposium - linked I with the research theme of German-Jewish women's writing and translingualism.

Results and Impact	I co-organised and served as a judge at the two Scottish Russian Children's Poetry Reading Competitions, in Edinburgh in March 2017 and in Dundee in March 2018. The objective was to raise interest in Russian-speaking and Russian-English bilingual children in Russian poetry. The competitions were very successful and had positive impact on the Scottish Russian-speaking communities 1) it linked together six Scottish Russian community schools 2) increased interest to and engagement with Russian language poetry among Russian-speaking children. The number of children enrolments in the competition grew from 30 in 2017 to 47 in 2018. Children became more adventurous with their poetry choice and read more complex, sophisticated and varied poetry as the competition progressed. 3) the number of supporters more than doubled to at least 200 in 2018. Parents and community activists have reported that this event became an important Russian-speaking community-building activity.

Results and Impact	I organised a two-day international academic and KE/outreach workshop entitled 'Showcasing Russian-speaking culture in the UK: Changing communities' which involved high calibre influential stakeholders. The aim of this workshop was to bring together the project's partners and stakeholders - successful leaders of Russian-speaking cultural entrepreneurship in the UK in order to share experiences and ideas for the current state and future of the Russophone culture in this country and to discuss the impact of such activities on Russian-speaking connectivities and community building. The event was held during and in partnership with the Edinburgh International Festival. This gave us an opportunity to develop a productive engagement and to build an exceptional potential for future collaboration between the Festival and the Russian cultural entrepreneurship as well as between the Russian cultural activists themselves. The participants represented such organisations as ARCC (Anglo-Russian Culture Club), Arbuzz, Zima Group, Stage RC, Bird and Carrot, and the BBC Russian Service. The keynotes were given by Roy Luxford, the Programme Director of Edinburgh International Festival and Dr Patricia Erskine, Head of Stakeholder Relations, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, of the University of Edinburgh. gave an overview of Edinburgh University's partnership with Edinburgh Festivals. The event certainly had an impact. One of the cultural entrepreneurs who took part in the event acknowledged that the event established in him a 'Bigger awareness of the issues the community faces and the ways they can be resolved.' As a result of the event, he 'will be even more closely involved in the variety and diversity of Russian-related activities in London: both through [his] personal participation in projects of Pushkin House, ZIMA, Bird & Carrot and others, as well as covering their activities on the BBC Russian Service website.' The Programme Director of Edinburgh International Festival expressed interest to hear in future more about the events planned by the Russophone cultural entrepreneurs.

Results and Impact	The Sin Fronteras creative leadership programme was a unique collaborative project between the Latin American Women's Rights Service (LAWRS) and the Cross-Language Dynamics project, in partnership with Southwark Council. The project explored and encouraged civic engagement and leadership among Latin American young women and girls (aged 14-21) in Southwark. Project team members based at the Institute of Modern Languages Research (Maria Soledad Montañez and Naomi Wells) worked in close collaboration with LAWRS to deliver a series of creative and discussion-based workshops exploring the links between gender and cultural identity, language, civic participation and leadership. The activities allowed the participants to work collaboratively, reflecting on their own complex and diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and their capabilities and skills as young Latin American women, and building a stronger sense of leadership and connectivity between them. Both researchers drew on their academic knowledge and experience in the design and delivery of the programme (e.g. MSM's work on Latin American women's writing and NW's work on multilingual identities), translating this knowledge into more engaging and creative formats for this new audience. The programme reached a group of 10-12 regular participants and feedback indicated an extremely positive response (97% of participants indicated the quality of the session was Very Good and 97% of participants indicated the usefulness of the session was Very Good). Feedback also indicated significant and positive changes in views, knowledge and behaviour as a result of the programme of activities. For example, in response to the following questions, participants responded that: 1) This project helped me to: "be more sociable", "to get to know other marvellous girls", "to not be selfish and to always have fellowship", "to get to know more friendly people", "to learn about Latin American culture", "to make new friends", "to develop my social skills and get out of my comfort zone" 2) In this project, I learnt: "teamwork", "to be myself with the girls", "develop new skills", "to do new challenges", "how to develop my talents", "to be myself", "to listen", "to do things as a team", "to value those who accompany me", "to be more creative eg: football, graffiti, poems", "to find myself", "that to do things as a team is better", "filmmaking and photography". 3) After attending this project, I will: "have more confidence", "be a leader with confidence", "to really value my new friends", "not to judge from appearances without knowing the person first - to be more open", "to be more creative and open to new things", "to learn to try new things and do them - YOLO (you only live once)" Participants also presented their experiences and work at a final public event, developing their confidence in public speaking, and a Zine was produced at the end of the programme to showcase the creative works produced by the group (see creative outputs).

Results and Impact	Spanish AS Study Day including the projection of the film Sergio and Sergei (Sergio and Sergei (12A) Dir Ernesto Daranas/Cuba/Spain 2017 (in Spanish, English and Russian with English Subtitle) at HOME Cinema in Manchester. 30 students from 3 schools attended the screening with a pre and post-discussion and activities. This study day addressed the themes of family, friendship, multilingual life, education, and included some contextual information about Cuba (history, and past and present socio-political issues). Then introduciton to the film in Spanish provided relevant historical and contextual information as well as key vocabulary. The screening was followed by a series of Spanish exercises based on the film, including character studies, film genre analysis and discussion of the main themes. The session included a short overview of contemporary Cuban film. Feedback from teachers was excellent (film presentation, interaction, selection of film, and resources). The students commented on the value of the historical contextualization. The resources included activities on critical thinking/critical writing.

Results and Impact	Objectives: to celebrate the borough's linguistic diversity and encourage multilingual education, and engagement. The support and promotion of community languages provide meaningful opportunities to be successfully and happily immersed in a complex world where cultural and linguistic diversity can be cherished and defended. The event was an opportunity to reach out the Spanish-speaking community in Southeast London and explore if a programme of similar activities in public. libraries - in conjunction with community and public organisations - might be useful in supporting the dissemination of information in community languages, for instance, about service provision in Southwark. The session was free and open to the public. The storytelling was created and performed by British-Argentinean Daniela Hathaway, and included a presentation by a member of staff from the Communities Division, Southwark Council and myself. Feedback from the event articulated the need for similar and more regular activities for families in public spaces. Our own data gathered during this research indicates that public libraries, museums, art galleries, parks and green spaces are the most frequent places attended by the Latin American community in Southwark. More than 80 families registered for this event online, which was fully booked within 48 hours. We used different social media channels to advertise the event, mostly through social media and in Spanish. On the day, Latin American organisations, such as Indoamerican Refugee and Migrant Organisation, Latin American Women's Rights Service and the migrant health charity Voces Amigas de la Esperanza offered advice and information about their services.

Results and Impact	The symposium was organised in order to raise awareness and share knowledge on Jewish women's writing in the early 20th century. It was attended by postgraduates, academics and professionals from various cultural institutions and engendered an in-depth exchange of ideas and a lively discussion. This is an underexplored area of German Studies - and indeed, of Jewish studies as well, and the audience expressed astonishment at the rich and varied literature produced by Jewish women in Germany, of which we hear too little. As a result, it was decided to plan a string of follow-up symposia. Podcasts of selected papers presented at the conference can be accessed on the IMLR website. Selected papers from this event will be published as a section in the Yearbook of the Leo Baeck Centre.

Results and Impact	This symposium brought together scholars working on translingual women's writing in the language fields of Italian, French and German. We explored the particular richness of texts produced by writers in languages that are not their mother tongues. Among the questions we explored were the following: • Is translingual writing perceived by the authors in question as a liberation and a new beginning, or as a requirement demanded by the literary market? • How does the particular attention to language required in translingual writing affect the text? • What are the distinctive literary and linguistic strategies employed in translingual writing? • Does writing in a foreign tongue go hand in hand with establishing a new identity? • What can translingual writing achieve that goes beyond the possibilities of texts produced by mother-tongue writers? It was a very dynamic and lively event with much discussion between speakers and the audience. Concrete ideas were discussed for planning a larger conference on the theme in 2019, and a number of people joined the planning group whose first encounter with the Institute and the OWRI research team was through this symposium.

Description	The 20-minute presentation 'Germanisten als Mittler in der englischsprachigen Kultur des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts' was given at a conference at the University of Aix-Marseilles entitled 'Germanistik --- Eine interkulturelle Wissenschaft'. Results and Impact	It was a major international conference which was funded by the Goethe Institut and DAAD. There were more than a dozen listeners in my panel, some of whom spoke to me about my contribution afterwards. I also attended many other panels and plenaries, asked questions and raised points. There was interest in the OWRI project and in particular in 'Bilingual British Writers'. It was particularly interesting that attempts at redefining the discipline of Modern Languages, or in this case Germanistik / German Studies, are being made in other countries as well as the UK.

Results and Impact	The conference brought together Latin American organisations, community leaders, academics and decision makers in Southwark to discuss and reflect on the needs and challenges faced by the Latin American communities in Southwark, as well as considering the community's assets and existing resources. The virtual conference explored opportunities for collaboration to bring about change and solutions and improve representation in Southwark. The Latin American Community Conference in Southwark was a cross-sector conference organized by the Southwark Latin American Network (SLAN) in partnership with Community Southwark, with the support of the Institute of Modern Languages Research, University of London. All member organisations gave a presentation and present a set of asks to Southwark Council. The conference was introduced by Community Southwark CEO, Chris Mikata-Pralat, and Cllr Alice MacDonald (Cabinet Member for Equalities, Neighbourhoods and Leisure), and Cllr Maria Linforth-Hall spoke about the importance of engaging with the Latin American community in Southwark. The conference was organised by David Reid (Community Southwark) and myself with the initial support of a small conference committee, formed by Latin American member organisations. Cllr Alice MacDonald (Cabinet Member for Equalities, Neighbourhoods and Leisure) said in her presentation at the conference: "I am committed to work with you all to make sure that your voices are heard, and you can thrive in this borough. [] "This is a very important conference" [María Soledad Montañez's report is a really important study [which] offers a valuable insight about what Southwark needs to do to tackle the issues faced by the community" The conference included three major panel sessions, which focused on SLAN's priority key areas: Place and Space; Health and Wellbeing, and Education and Culture, Employment and Welfare Rights. Panel members included: Sangeeta Leahy (Director of Public Health Southwark), Cllr Jason Ochere (Cabinet member for business, Jobs and Town Centres), Cllr Evelyn Akoto (Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing), Sally Causer (Southwark Law Centre), and Rosie Dalton-Lucas (Head of Programme - Healthy Places, Public Health Division, Place and Wellbeing Department, London Borough of Southwark). More than 20 invitations were sent to Cabinet Members, key Council Officers and stakeholders in the borough, who due to previous commitments, could not attend the conference.

Results and Impact	Taking into account the growing significance of visual cultures in education, especially the increased popularity of streaming services and the video sharing site YouTube since the start of the pandemic, this session will present the project Transmedia in Education: New Approaches to Transmedia and Language Pedagogy. The first part of the session will focus on introducing the visual literacy framework that we use and on presenting some resources for embedding films more systematically in L2 teaching. Our case studies include pedagogical applications for using short film flexibly as part of language classes. The second part of the session brings together the opportunities and affordances derived from the explosion of user-generated online content by prosumers (consumers and creators) working with a mix of non-verbal cultural artefacts (e.g. short films, publicity materials, animation, video games, etc.) to broaden students' transmedia skills, develop translingual and transcultural competences, and encourage creativity and storytelling skills.

Results and Impact	The objective of this academic and KE/KT workshop was to bring together academics and media professionals working for leading transnational and diasporic Russian-speaking media outlets in the UK and beyond. The workshop elaborated on the key theme of the project - the cultural production and consumption of the Russophone diasporic community in the UK and new discourse in Russian, while also looking at the UK in the comparative perspective. The media outlets represented were BBC Russian Service, Meduza (Latvia), Angliya, Zima, The Business Courier (UK). The academics and stakeholders engaged in a productive discussion of the key questions of the workshop, links and partnerships between the media outlets have been established.

Ap Glyn and Yang read their translations of one another's poems. All writers' poems were circulated in a brochure with English translations. Audience survey (n=98) showed 90% felt that they now saw language, culture and translation in new ways. Results and Impact	I co-organised, in collaboration with the Russian Consulate, a film screening and moderated a panel discussion on 'Attraction' (dir. Fedor Bondarchuk) at IMAX Cineworld Edinburgh. The film is an allegory for the attitudes towards migration and dealing with the Other, which became the focus of the discussion, which I led. Four discussants participated: Professor Dina Iordanova, (Professor of Film Studies and Director of the Centre for Film Studies, St Andrews University), Dr Alexandra Smith (Russian, the University of Edinburgh), and Anne Liebig (PhD student at the University of Edinburgh). The discussion was very lively, with active audience participation and attracted many questions and expression of opinion. According to the feedback of the members of the audience and the Russian Consulate, the event increased interest in the issues of migration and migrants amongst our communities.

Results and Impact	My project partnered up with the UK's Kniguru Russophone Children's Book Festival and extended this event to Scotland. The events of this festival sought to involve Russian-speaking schools, families and communities in reading children's books in Russian. I organised the first in Scotland children's Russian book club in order to promote Russophone reading by children in Scotland. The UK's readers' competition part of the Festival was enhanced by devising a readers' questionnaire and producing teaching materials for children's book clubs and schools. The questionnaire provided guidance for children in relation to forming and expressing their views and opinions about the books read, and to developing children's reflective, analytical and emotional engagement with contemporary literature in the Russian language. 58 Russophone children overall took part in the Kniguru readers' competition in 2018. 36% of the participants of the Festival competition (19 children) opted to use the questionnaire which I devised over other methods of participation

Results and Impact	I was invited to take part in the discussion with Misha Glenny, the author of 'McMafia' and an executive producer of the eponymous BBC series screened in early 2018. The book and the series dealt with the Russian global organised crime in London and I contributed my expertise on the Russian-speaking community in the UK and the notion of 'Londongrad' in the fictional and real-life imagination of the Russohpne diaspora.

Results and Impact	The AHRC hosted an International Development Summit- 'Mobilising Global Voices', at the British Library, London on Wednesday 7th June 2017. A speaker from our February event "Participatory Arts, International Development and National Cultural Identities" was asked to be on an expert panel with Prof. Paul Cooke, and also successfully applied to present a paper at the event. The Summit aimed to showcase and discuss the unique and important contribution that AHRC-funded research (and of the arts and humanities more widely) makes to policy and practice in International Development and to cross-disciplinary and collaborative research which addresses a range of global challenges.
