Abstract
The Connected Communities Leadership Fellowship comprises two elements: first, a programme development role working across the over 300 projects in the programme; and second, a personal research fellowship related to the aims of the Connected Communities Programme.
The aim of the first element of the fellowship is to ensure that the Connected Communities programme adds up to more than the sum of its parts, by bringing together people, themes, activities and ideas across the programme and creating collective spaces for developing new insights and generating a meaningful common legacy. The activities here involve everything from maintaining web and social media activities, running small events, setting up and editing a book series from the programme, continuing to research and document the work of the programme and experience of all participants, commissioning publications on the foundations of collaborative and co-produced research, producing edited collections. The work also includes making connections between Conencted Communities and other AHRC themes, and involves, for example: joint conferences on Utopias and Futures with the Care for the Future theme, exploring the participation of BME groups in the Arts and Humanities research with the Translating Cultures Theme, and participating in joint writing and a series of small and large events in collaboration with all other themes.

Planned Impact
Key routes to impact for the activities of the Fellowship are:
Via policy channels - through workshops, events and face to face meetings and networking, the fellowship will seek to produce a greater dialogue with funders of and advocates for community-engaged research. This begins with the Funders Forum being held September 2015, and will be developed through one to one meetings using the CC fellowship report as a basis for discussions. This will build on the existing relationships with BIS, Cabinet Office and DCLG that have been brokered in the first phase of the fellowship. Further areas of development include building closer relations with think tanks.
Via the Community Partners and Collaborators on the Connected Communities Programme - through ongoing collaboration with these groups, in particular the Community Partner Network, Heritage Lottery Fund, New Economics Foundation NEON network, and others in the design of research, the development of the CC Programme and the publications of joint outputs and procedures from the work.
Via the Runymede Foundation - who are acting as collaborators in the joint programme on BME participation in the Arts and Humanities.
Via international Education Networks - for example, the WISE Foundation, TedX events - to engage international university policy makers in the development of international strategies for university-public engaged collaborative research.
Via the CC social media and web presence - we already have over 1500 twitter followers and a healthy audience for web activity, we will continue to promote and develop this as a resource and work closely with print and tv journalists to enhance the website so that it can be more easily used by media organisations to communicate research out to a wider UK public.

The Reinventing Learning Cities Project is documenting how the cities' infrastructure for learning is built and eroded, and the conditions that contribute to its longer term development for the public good - emerging findings on the blog here https://learningcitiesproject.org/ The book 'Working with time in qualitative research: case studies, theory and practice' demonstrates the critical importance of considerations of time as part of building robust collaborative partnerships. It explores how rhythm, delay, improvisation, clock time, killing time, futures, scenarios, past futures, community histories and other approaches to working with time in research fundamentally shape what is and can be known, particularly in collaborative research. The book also demonstrates how the temporal regimes of universities and funding agencies are structuring the way that knowledge is produced - and that these considerations are not engaged with sufficiently in the design of research funding calls and university funding practices. |

| Description | The research has had an impact on the UK Research Councils' funding, informing large funding calls, and new, ongoing funding programmes in the charitable sector, affecting millions of pounds of research funding nationally. This funding is in turn having an impact, leading to greater engagement of low income, excluded and community groups in the early stages of the research process and the formation of new partnerships between academic institutions and community partners. Insights from the project directly led to or informed national funding calls issued by the UK Research Councils, associated with over GBP 5,500,000 in awarded grants. Funding calls from the AHRC, the EPSRC and NERC have all cited the Creating Living Knowledge project's findings, noting the benefits of public engagement to both researchers and the public. The research has also been embedded in the ESRC's Guidance for Collaboration, which applicants are encouraged to follow. As well as this new Research Council funding, the Creating Living Knowledge research has also had an impact on NGO funding programmes. The Community University Partnerships Initiative (CUPI) run by the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement directs research funding to communities to support partnerships with universities, and is funded by Power to Change (an independent charitable trust) and the AHRC. It has funded 28 partnerships, including 37 community partners. Meanwhile, the Common Cause Research project has had an impact challenging universities' lack of engagement with Black and Minority Ethnic Communities, as well as funding practice at the AHRC and UKRI. The AHRC's 2019 Strategic Delivery Plan cited the project, and noted its "recommendations, for example on how to generate trust between universities and their partners and on principles to make sure research partnerships are fair and mutual". One of the AHRC's actions, to "challenge ourselves and our communities to establish more equitable partnerships with those we work with", was directly "informed by the Common Cause report". Responding to the challenges raised in the Common Cause Research (CCR), in 2019 the AHRC appointed Dylan Law as Head of Cultural Value and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) to draft a strategy for the AHRC's approach to EDI and represent EDI on the UKRI Implementation Group. This post, which Law says "began life in the Common Cause Research", is the AHRC's first dedicated EDI staff member. In 2020 the AHRC is establishing EDI Engagement Fellowships to allow academics working on EDI to take their research outside the academy; these will build directly on the recommendations of the Common Cause research, and guidance about engagement outside the academy will, Dylan Law says, be "based on guidelines from Common Cause Research". The AHRC is also working to embed EDI within the Doctoral Training Partnerships and Collaborative Doctoral Awards (CDAs), and Law says this will "broaden the range of organisations students can undertake placements and CDAs with, to include smaller and more local ones, as championed in Common Cause Research". As well as these changes at the AHRC and UKRI, the findings from this research are also being implemented through collaborations with charities, funders and network building, with impacts on increasing the extent and depth of university partnerships with BME communities. Working with the Runnymede Trust (the leading equality and rights organisation in the UK) the Common Cause Research enabled the formation of a network, initially around 300 people, which has now become established as an independent project - the Common Cause Networks - led by the Runnymede Trust to develop leadership and research capacity within BME community and cultural organisations. These networks have helped the Runnymede Trust to build its own capacity and, crucially, to enable people to form networks who may not otherwise have been able to do so. A conference for network members will take place in late 2020. Further updates since that time: In 2019, Keri Facer was invited to speak to the FORMAS funding council in Sweden, providing advice on co-produced and collaborative research to inform Formas' own research funding strategy. In 2022, Keri Facer was invited to join a Joseph Rowntree Foundation workshop developing proposals for social infrastructure for the imagination, insights from this programme fed into this. |

The Fellowship has provided funding, a research associate and administrative assistance to the Common Cause Project. Keri Facer leads the research team in collaboration with the partners and the primary researcher for phase 2 of the project is based at the University of Bristol as part of the Connected Communities Fellowship. |

| Results and Impact | At Common Ground a wide range of activities across nine zones ranging from theatrical, operatic, and poetry performances to debates, keynotes, film showings, tech hacks, and live streaming via online radio happened over the course of one day. The activities were run by participants from organisations across the UK including Higher Education Institutions, cultural organisations, museums and galleries such as the British Library, the National Railways museum and Sage Gateshead and community groups. Keri Facer acted as a zone co-ordinator and Katherine Dunleavy was involved in logistics on the day. |

| Results and Impact | As part of the art exhibition, there was a day of talks exploring how we learn in the city through everyday practices, public pedagogy and social and community engagement. The morning session was structured as a "behind the scenes" gallery talk on how the exhibition was put together, from research to making the artworks. The talk included Professor Keri Facer (research team), Gideon Thomas (community researcher and Cathy Wilson (poetry group) The afternoon session, hosted by Keri Facer, focused on the role of universities in the city, and invited experts presenting their unique perspectives on the learning city. Dr Cassie Earl from University of Bristol discussed critical approaches to public pedagogy and Professor Robin Hambleton (UWE) focused on inclusive cities. The final closing event included Tommy Jarvis (Bristol Learning City) and Professor Judith Squires (University of Bristol), followed by a poetry evening celebrating the learning city. |
