Title	31 October 1914, Stemming the German Tide, Battle of Gheluvelt
Description	On 31st October 1914, 375 battle-weary officers and men of the Worcestershire Regiment at the Belgian village of Gheluvelt were all that stood between the Kaiser's victorious army and the channel ports. Defeat would have cut off the British expeditionary probably forcing the allies to surrender. Against overwhelming odds the Worcesters who had already sustained heavy losses, bravely charged over open fields under intense fire to the heavily defended Gheluvelt Chateau where there was fierce hand-to-hand fighting. Eventually, the Germans retreated. The British line had held and the tide was turned, but 187 of the Worcesters were killed or wounded. With access to the unique archives of the Worcester Regiment, military historian Dr Spencer Jones, explains how this remarkable engagement took place.

Description	'Aden Then & Now' is an interactive exhibition which draws on the historic legacies of the First World War in what was then known as the 'Aden Protectorate' to better understand more contemporary developments of the current war in Yemen. From the 1914 Battles with the Ottomans to the rise of Al-Qaeda in the late 1990s; from the outbreak of the civil war in the aftermath of the 2011 uprisings, to the more recent military intervention by the Saudi-led coalition, Yemen is a country torn by long years of conflict and unrest. Drawing on audiovisual archival material from the early 1900s, and on more recent contributions from Yemenis who live in Aden today, this exhibition is an opportunity to rethink the contemporary legacies of the 'Great War' in Yemen, and to explore the human, political and ethical costs of being involved in a war which has been going for over 100 years.

Massed German forces were overwhelming the small British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and an ill - prepared French army in a single bold sweep through Belgium - The Schlieffen Plan. Title	Beyond the Battlefields: Kathe Buchler's Photographs of Germany in the Great War
Description	20 October 2017 - 14 January 2018 University of Birmingham and Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery Beyond the Battlefields is assembled from a unique series of images made by photographer Käthe Buchler (1876-1930) before and during the First World War in Germany and which are part of the collection of the Museum of Photography, Braunschweig, where Buchler lived and worked. This is the first time that Buchler's work has been displayed outside Germany. Buchler's exquisitely posed images are those of a respectable, bourgeois wife and mother with significant technical expertise and a remarkable (and little known) aesthetic vision. Through different picture cycles, she examines the care of orphaned children and wounded troops, Germans at work and at leisure - including a fascinating series made late in the war entitled 'Women in Men's Jobs'- and presents the dislocations of war along with striking moments of human warmth. In so doing she offers us a fascinating window on the preoccupations of ordinary Germans living and working hundreds of miles away from the fighting. There will be two exhibitions in Birmingham, at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, focusing on Buchler's images of women and children, and at the University of Birmingham where her photographs of injured soldiers will be displayed alongside material relating to the University's role as a hospital during the War. Beyond the Battlefields is a touring exhibition co-organised by the University of Hertfordshire Galleries, Museum für Photographie Braunschweig and the AHRC funded First World War Engagement Centres at the University of Birmingham and the University of Hertfordshire.

Impact	A University of Birmingham Heritage Intern carried out evaluation into the exhibition. Summary of feedback • A common theme of the feedback was that people enjoyed the focus on the home front and learning about the experience of women and children, in contrast to the typical preoccupation with life on the battlefield and focus on the role of men. It was raised by a number of people that the feminine perspective of the photographs revealed really interesting things about the experiences of war. This social perspective on the war was very popular. • The exhibition produced emotive responses from people; for example, visitors used words including 'phenomenal' 'thought-provoking' and 'fascinating' to describe the exhibition. • A number of people commented on how nice it was in both exhibitions to have a combination of the British perspective as well as the German side of the war. This brought the experiences together and challenged the traditional narrative of "them vs us". It instead allowed for nice comparisons to be drawn. • Visitors tended to think it was very interesting, and the overall presentation and display of the exhibition was done really effectively. • 100% of people asked said they would recommend the exhibition.

This cross-disciplinary approach ensures that the final collection is the result of different perspectives - the history of the war, significance of Buchler as a woman photographer and her artistic excellence as an 'amateur'. Professor Melanie Tebbutt, Professor in History at Manchester Metropolitan University, said: "Buchler's carefully choreographed images chronicled convalescing soldiers, children collecting for recycling campaigns, and babies in war nurseries and are a documentary homage to how ordinary women and children were rising to the challenge of food, labour and material shortages on the home front. Buchler's calm, disciplined interpretation of civilian life, distant from the violent upheavals of military action at the front, suggest empathy and belief in the human spirit."

Title	Courage without glory, the crisis of the British in 1915
Description	In the second year of the First World War the British Army was faced with severe problems. Its core of full time professionals had been decimated in the desperate battles to halt the German onslaught in 1914. Time was desperately needed to recruit, train and organise a new army, but the urgent demands of allies including the French and Russians meant that action was needed now. In his latest film, author, Dr Spencer Jones, Senior Lecturer in Armed Forces and War Studies at the University of Wolverhampton, shows how this poorly equipped army courageously coped with the alien world of trench warfare on the western front. Description	Episode 3 - Discovering the Hidden Home Front: Caring for the Wounded Thousands of wounded soldiers were cared for in the more than 30 convalescent hospitals and homes in the West Midlands. As military hospitals were soon overwhelmed. The wounded in their distinctive blue and red uniforms became a familiar sight in the towns and villages across Worcestershire. They were nursed by women who had never previously worked outside the home and their experiences changed their lives forever. Many of the convalescence hospitals were opened by private individuals in large houses and public buildings across the county. In Episode 3 of our series Hidden Histories of the Home Front Lesley Spiers, Senior Lecturer at the University of Worcester, tells the stories of hospitals such as Abbey Manor near Evesham and its formidable owner Mrs Florence Haynes Rudge who cared for more than 3600 wounded soldiers from 1915-1919.

Title	Why Remember? WWI centenary and public commemoration at the Tower of London
Description	The major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London marked one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War. In the run up to the opening of the installation, Historic Royal Palace's Public Engagement teams worked with researchers to think through some of the issues associated with remembrance in the context of the First World War centenary. This work became the Why Remember? programme which accompanied 'Blood Swept Lands.' It centred on three questions designed to encourage dialogue about how and why we remember: Why should we remember the war? Why are 100 years so significant? How do you want to remember? This film, released at the close of the centenary, and featuring the 'Beyond the Deepening Shadow' installation, encourages people to engage once again with those questions. We hope it will inform our future conversations about commemoration and remembrance. Title	Why the British Army was so successful in 1914
Description	Learning lessons from Boer War When Britain despatched an Expeditionary Force (the BEF) to the Continent in August 1914, the German Kaiser issued an order of the day to his generals to "walk over General French's contemptible little army". But despite being heavily outnumbered, this small force, including many men from the West Midlands, played a vital role in stopping the seemingly overwhelming the German advance across Belgium and into France. Small in size compared with the much larger armies of France and Germany, the BEF was highly effective. This was in stark contrast to the disasters that the British Army had experienced a few years earlier at the start of the Second Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa Why? In this new film Spencer Jones, Senior Lecturer in Armed Forces and War Studies at Wolverhampton University, describes the hard lessons that the British Army learnt in South Africa and how it successfully applied them on the battlefields of 1914. As a result, the British Expeditionary Force may have been "little" but as the Kaiser found out it was certainly not "contemptible".

The Voices Centre, working with Everyday Lives, organised a series of community legacy festivals held across the UK in 2019 (Birmingham, Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow, London). 1.1 At the outset the Voices project identified six objectives. These we supplemented in 2016 by additional objectives collaboratively produced by the five Engagement Centres in response to a request from the AHRC to produce a vision statement for the Centres. Some of the objectives were functional: making archival and museum materials available, putting on workshops, delivering outreach activities. Others addressed larger agendas: contemporary resonances of the conflict, developing sustainable partnership models, understanding and critically reflecting on co-production. It is the latter objectives which will be the focus of attention here. Details of all Voices activities are on researchfish and additional material can also be found at https://www.voicesofwarandpeace.org/ 1.2 Achievements can also be read as legacies and reflecting on the achievements of the Centre has been helped by the report Creating New Knowledge (2016) and its framing of interconnected achievements/legacies: Products, People, Networks, Institutions and the Research Landscape. What follows uses this as a framework. In terms of Products it is easy to give numbers - Voices academics and community partners have produced to date 83 publications [articles, books and pamphlets] and delivered over 200 Engagement Events. Further publications are in preparation, for example CIs Jenny Kidd (Cardiff) and Joanne Sayner (Birmingham [UoB]/ Newcastle) are still analysing visitor data collected by ECRs from the eighteen sites relating to the poppies on tour with 1418Now and the Why Remember? Project. The Centre has also commissioned over ten documentary films including one linked to the Why Remember? Project. What the numbers fail to show are the properties, processes and dynamics which underpin the outputs. 1.3 One of the research themes of the Voices Centre was Belief in the First World War [FWW] which was led by CI Michael Snape [UoB/Durham] and one element of his research was a community project which compared chaplaincy and religious faith in the British army during the First World War and the so-called War on Terror (2001-2014). It generated through contemporary interviews new historical material concerning chaplaincy, faith and the British army in Afghanistan, and illuminated the extent to which the legacy of the First World War affected the organisation, ethos and ministry of British army chaplains today. The interviews and subsequent publication were the product of a collaboration between CI Snape and an ECR, Victoria Henshaw. The interviews, transcripts, and associated artefacts, photographs and diaries were presented to the Museum of Army Chaplaincy. The Museum relocated and materials from the projects have informed its content and displays and Snape is currently acting as an advisor to the museum. The success of the project led to a further one, 'Battles and Belief', funded by the Museum which seeks to recover the lived experience of Army Chaplains from the Korean War to the present day, covering Malaya, Suez, Cyprus, Aden, Kenya, Northern Ireland, the Falklands, Kosovo, Gulf Wars I and II, and Iraq. Finally, at a meeting of the Voices CIs in late 2019 Snape stated that his approach to research had changed and that his prime aim was to work more with communities. 1.4 What the above illustrates is the multi-dimensional nature of collaborative projects and community engagement and similar narratives of achievement could have been presented here for the other fourteen community projects funded by the Centre. 1.5 A key characteristic of the Voices Centre was a commitment to inclusivity and supporting research projects which addressed issues of diversity. In 2019 a two day Diversity Festival was organised to reflect on public history, heritage and diversity, to explore the different types of collaborative work that had been done around FWW subjects since 2014, and to identify future collaborations which could change the traditional research landscape. The festival attracted a national audience and enabled participants and attendees to better understand the challenges and opportunities of collaborative work around history, heritage and commemoration. A keynote by David Olusoga framed the event and was followed by a series of panel discussions, informal workshops, film screenings, and performances. which collectively generated reflective conversations around the nature of co-production. The event gave a platform for the research of BaME community activists to be heard and disseminated but also to connect their experiences with the findings of the Common Cause report. 1.6 The Diversity Festival was co-produced and delivered with community partners, including Recognize Black Heritage & Culture and Believe in Me, but central to its success and that of the other Four Nations Festival events was also collaboration with the Everyday Lives Engagement Centre and PI Professor Sarah Lloyd. Cross-centre working with Everyday Lives originated in conversations at multiple levels, including PI Lloyd's membership of the Voices Advisory Board, during in phase 1 to become very concrete in Phase 2 through the Käthe Buchler Beyond the Battlefields exhibition and associated programme of events. Collaborations with Everyday Lives enabled creative use of funding and a scale of activity that fostered reflection and greater impact. Collaboration maximized opportunities to reach varied audiences, both community and academic, e.g. an associated programme in Birmingham around women photographers and conflict, and to develop different centenary themes. The two Centres collated outputs, knowledge, process, and data to produce a series of films from the 2019 Festivals, to write a Policy Statement (with support from the other Centres) and a Practice Manual, collating both Centres experience of communities and research co-production across the centenary.

Results and Impact	Launch event for the Manchester exhibition of Kathe Buchlers photographs of the Home Front in Germany took place on the first February, attracting c. 130 visitors over the course of the evening. VISITORS WERE ASKED THE FOLLOWING: What questions does the exhibition raise for you? Replies were as follows: Class boundaries Was the war equal after all? Each side has forgotten ones. The text raises questions about the true poverty of the time Why did we ever go to war? How much do we truly know (in this day and age) about life pre-WW1 If there can be more like this When and where can I see all the other photos? What were the daily hardships the civilian population had to endure? How hard for the people in everyday lives are. What we chose to throw away in belonging. If there was a 'we'. How could war have happened twice? :( Who does war benefit? For me the biggest question I have looking back is how she was able to take the photos at the time. Obviously some of the photos, although they've been staged, others are more scenes showing people in everyday scenarios, people casually performing their tasks and duties and jobs. Also, where she was one of the first people to experiment with colour photography, I'd be interested to know how she did it. I'm going to find out more about it. I'd like to know more about her. There was some information about - she undertook some training and there was only one course that was open to women, so I'd like to know more about that. It linked up with an exhibition which I saw at The Tate, which was also by a German photographer of ordinary working people, so it was interesting to see that but this was from a women's perspective. When can we see the other photographs? I'd like to see more. I definitely have a different view on pre-World War One Germany. VISITORS WERE ALSO ASKED WHICH PHOTOS THEY PREFERRED:Rabbits. The grips seems tighten once you realise the shortage of food Three boys saluting with metal helmets on The human aspect The three children in the high chairs. The 3 toddlers in the high chairs. The 3 toddlers The unknown girl The children with the rabbits. I wonder what happened to them? 20 years on and they would be plunged into war again. The large white rabbit - future probably in the stewpot and around someone's neck. Those involving women at work. Boys with rabbits! Animal head active group? Horribly compelling. The harlequin girls and the rabbits. I took particular interest in the portrait called 'unknown girl'. The neatly stacked heap of bottles on the far side of the central aisle. I would have two favourites I think. The three children who are playing ball, throwing this sort of carnival thing. The other one would be the nurse who's passing through, posing by the train with the soldiers. So that clearly gendered image of the men going to war and the women being nurses. I liked the one with the three babies in high chairs. I think you can just see the emotion of the toddlers' faces. I think it was really well done. I think the landscape of it was really good. There was one photograph which featured three young boys, but on the board behind you had three caricatures. One was a Frenchman, one of a Scotsman and one of a Russian cossack. When speaking to one of the other event attendees we wondered whether this was set up as poking fun at the allied troops, as them being stereotypes or negative connotations for allied forces against Germany during the war era. Yes. I loved this one. The boy with the rabbit, and I also liked, the two clown girls that was lovely as well, but I liked the kids with the rabbits and the Halloween one with them all wearing rabbit masks- it looked kind of pagan-y or something. I'm torn between three of them. The Romani one, the one with the children dressed up as if they're going to go shooting. The one which is kind of abstract, where they're all dressed up as horses, which is totally random. And the innocence of the children as well, and how it didn't impact on - it put a perspective on things. I thought it reveals that, which is really interesting. My husband liked the one of the three soldiers arriving at the station. The rabbit waiting to go into the stew pot. I liked the women in work, doing what in those days was men's work I suppose. There's one of three children sat in the high chairs, and some of the children are looking away from the frame, one of the children is staring at the frame, and she's clear, the rest of them are blurry because obviously it's an old photograph. WHAT ARE YOUR IMPRESSIONS OF KATHE BUCHLER AS A PHOTOGRAPHER? Provocateur! Wonderful and knowledgable I think she wanted to show honest depictions of humanity in war. The smile on a boy's face holding a rabbit and the smile on a woman's face taking on a male role. Incredible photographer Inspiring to capture people I love how raw the images are I like that the subjects weren't focused on the camera, offering a more natural approach Very talented. Good portraiture She was a brilliant photographer. The quality of the photos is excellent I'm particularly impressed by the autochrome pictures. She photographed what she saw, I think it's up to us to interpret what we see Excellent - using primitive equipment Most poignant. Particularly of the children playing Very charming. 'Straight ahead'. Sentimental but a realist. I like the way in which she composes her images. I also took great interest in her portraits of people as I am looking to work in the documentary industry. A sensitive product of her class. I think she has an eye for the framing of the pictures. Obviously it's not colour but I think the use of the light in some of the images is pretty good, pretty interesting. There are some that clearly stand out over others, but she's quite a good photographer. I think she's really talented. I think she's really good at portraiture, like the way she captures people in their own environment is really talented. I think she's really good. Normally when I see photographs from this era they seem to be portraits or just pictures of a family set-up. This one, although the photographs are still staged they were more every day life, people performing every day tasks. It would have been nice to have a bit more impression of her mellieur. It talks about her being an amateur, but then she seemed to have been related to someone in the camera business. I didn't quite understand. But what was she looking at? Was she looking at [[August Sanders]] photos? What was she modelling herself on? Prefer some information on her visual training, not photographer training, but were photographs available in public museums to look at?

How people make meaning? How publics are constituted? How change happens and How knowledge-based institutions develop? Results and Impact	The exhibition in the Grosvenor Gallery, Manchester Metropolitan University attracted a steady stream of visitors, who whose views on the exhibition were as follows. HAS THE EXHIBITION AFFECTED YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF GERMANY IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR? No, but it has made me reflect on WW1. More on German casualties than on England's. Yes. Didn't realise how much suffering occurred because of the Allied embargo. I feel that this is a topic that isn't highlighted often. WW1 Germany is something I don't think I have ever given thought to. Yes, the children are blameless. It has improved it (knew nothing before). The exhibition showed that women and children replaced the men during the war. They were doing jobs which only men did at the time. Yes, although the historical awareness I have is quite deep, this exhibition shows many faces, bringing it much more close. I think we usually get a one-sided view of the war, so it is good to see the other side, especially how similar it was. Not affected but reinforced. It has shown that war affects everyone. More peaceful than I imagined, although "camera" might have made them look happier. Seems more desperate, less febrile or pastoral. That they were normal people too - not just a blanket group that represent one thing. It has given me more of an insight of how little people had. Well, not mine as I do research on war studies and war. For me it just confirms what I already knew about the home front and the war. Yeah. I thought it would have been a really bleak, dark time, but it wasn't too much. Yeah, the exhibition shows a different side to war in Germany, whereas normally you get the view from just the military side. This side you're actually seeing the effects on the civilians behind, and the women and children, and how it effected the country of Germany and not just the men on the front line. Perhaps. It's difficult to think of Germany during the first world war. When you think it was the Germans and - you kind of think of the UK and us when you think of the war. No, I don't think so. Yes. Perhaps. It's difficult to think of Germany during the first world war. When you think it was the Germans and - you kind of think of the UK and us when you think of the war. It has probably informed it, yeah. It has not changed it. It's developed it. Although the photographs are of a very rich upper-middle class without really showing the starvation which increasingly affected Germany thanks to our naval patrols. Not really because I was aware of my mother's struggles, so in that aspect no, but I'm probably the wrong person to ask that to. I think it's very easy to look at our own - I say people - but our own country in that time of need and see that perspective, whereas to see that gives you a bit of insight into what it was like from that side. We're all human. WHAT DO THESE PHOTOGRAPHS EVOKE FOR YOU? Mysticism - rare in classic 'war photography'. I think for me, I see a woman interrupted. A woman who wanted to photograph bright flowers and instead found herself in the grips of war; photographing the highs and lows of the forgotten. Melancholia. Lovely composition of subjects. Makes you think of Germany as a nation of people. I feel these images represent something more than the physical attributes of a photograph. Empathy for the struggle back home. Childhood nostalgia and creativity. I have two connections as I have seen a few examples of Mrs Buchler's work in Braunschweig, and secondly in the GDR. Children did collect paper, bottles and cards, similar to the collector Mrs Buchler photographed. A connection with my history. Common experiences of people on all sides of the war: relative wealth of many of those photographed. Pictures of my mother's childhood in Germany. I found they are very charming and beautiful. Dissonance in 'live' feeling of existance and blank despair. Sad, contemplative? The children could probably sense the tension and fear of the period but they were oblivious to what horror was really happening. Shows that you don't need a digital camera to take great images. Very powerful images which really make you think about WW1 and how people lived and worked at a much younger age. Germany in the 90s. For me it was the pictures of the children. How they were, at the same time, aware of the war and unaware of the war. So how they play with these notions of conflict and how war has become the 'new normal' for them; so trying to get a rabbit just for contributing to the war effort represents that very well. I don't want to say cliché stuff like nostalgia or stuff like that. I enjoyed them, it just made me not happy but satisfied, content. I want to say nostalgic, but not nostalgic to me. Nostalgic in history. My dad was a keen collector of World War I and World War II books, so for me, it drew me back to my childhood memories. He would talk about both the wars in quite a bit of detail to me, so that brought back to me a sort of nostalgia for me On similar lines when you see a German series like Das Boot, where you see it from a different perspective, it kind of helps you to see it through their eyes rather than from an outside perspective. I thought that was quite powerful. My mother's German and she grew up in the second world war, and it reminded me of her hardships, which people don't really think about at all, particularly in this country. It's all about the British struggle, but everybody struggles in war. There's no goodies or baddies. It shows that the suffering in Germany was similar to that in Britain. Thank you for bringing these photographs to the UK. It's striking how these images help us to find - and also to regret the loss of - the common ground between life in Germany & life in the UK during WW1: a time that we must try to understand.

The workshop was convened by BBC Radio 3 producers and the AHRC, and was attended by about 20 other shortlisted academics from a number of universities across the UK. Results and Impact	Archive Mediations: Contemplations of the Home Front, based on Bury Art Museum's First World War Archive, featured work from staff and students at Manchester Metropolitan University. The exhibition's curated by Jacqueline Butler and was inspired by the Kathe Buchler Beyond the Battlefields exhibition at the university's Grosvenor Gallery. The exhibition brought together the work of thirteen artists, academics, researchers and students from the city of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University School of Art. The focus was on family life during a period of war, artists working across a range of media created interventions into the Museum's WW1 display. The exhibition was conceived through a series of conversations Jacqueline Butler the curator, had whilst working on another exhibition Beyond the Battlefields: Käthe Buchler's Photographs of Germany in WW1. This exhibition brought the work of a little known amateur female German photographer to the UK for the first time. Her photographs captured lives of women and children in Germany during the Great War. The resulting work produced for the exhibition Archive Interventions is drawn together by common themes of the fragility of life, health and nourishment and family inheritance. Some of the artists also placed objects they have inherited from their own personal archives creating a meditate space between private and public collections. Entering the exhibition through a wall full of cherry blossom the colours or pink and red continued and created a rhythmic flow through the space. Emblematic of flesh and blood, life and death we are reminded of the futility and consequence of war.

Working with UK reminiscence charity Age Exchange, the film was made by veterans with mental health conditions to mark the centenary of the veterans' mental health charity Combat Stress. *Please be aware this film contains some upsetting descriptions of combat and trauma-related events, and describes the realities of living with a serious mental health issue. Results and Impact	The event in London on 7 November, the last of the Legacies of the First World War Festival series, will be dedicated to reflecting on public history and heritage and on demonstrating the value of heritage in bringing communities together. The event will showcase the capabilities of UK Universities as world leaders in public engagement research, particularly their role in place-making and connecting local and global knowledge. In responding to divisive and uncomfortable pasts, university-community partnerships can empower diverse communities to tell their own stories of presence, belonging and contribution. At the event we will share outputs and learnings from the WW1 Engagement Centres who have supported a wide range of community engagement activities across the UK since 2014, connecting academic and public histories of the First World War as part of the commemoration of the War's centenary. The event also intends to provide a forum for further discussion on the recently published DCMS report on 'Lessons from the First World War Centenary' which references the Centres. The event will enable participants and attendees to better understand the challenges and opportunities of collaborative work around history, heritage and commemoration. Groups who have successfully completed HLF-funded projects spoke about their experiences of developing and running them, and expert advice was on hand from the WW1 engagement centre teams to assist participants in developing their projects. Advisers from the HLF talked through some of the practical aspects of applying, and there was a forum for individuals and groups to discuss their ideas.

Results and Impact	This documentary reveals the story of the 140,000 Chinese workers who came to Europe in 1917 and risked their lives for the Allied war effort but whose vital contribution was painted out of history. As part of the documentary, for the first time a memorial to Chinese Labour Corps members who died during the war was created and now stands at the Chinese Exchange in London. This documentary highlighted the importance of the Chinese contribution to the First World War. It prompted many enquiries from Anglo-Chinese citizens interested in learning more about the history of the Chinese Labour Corps.

Results and Impact	Refugee Tales was a continuation of Prof. Stephen Dixon's on-going World War 1 research project, exploring commemoration through clay and working with refugee and community groups in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. The participants, members of the Jubilee Club, examined their own perceptions of identity, displacement and migration, and compared these to the experiences of the Belgian refugees who came to the UK during World War 1. The British Ceramics Biennial at which these works were presented received 60,847 visits in 2017.

Smaranjeet, a young Indian soldier, has been injured on the Western Front. His arrival at hospital presents a big challenge for Lily, the Birmingham nurse assigned to help rehabilitate him. Shell-shocked and traumatised by his experiences at the Front, the recovered memories of his journey from a Punjabi Village, via France, to the Birmingham suburbs, are slowly revealed. But with the Armistice approaching, what will become of the characters' future selves, forever impacted by the damage of War? The Play House uses participatory theatre to support the language and learning of children and young people. We aim to stimulate children's imagination and creativity, with meaningful participation at the heart of everything we do.

Results and Impact	The premiere of the film made as a result of the Women's Peace Crusade, 1917-18 project and launch of the book which accompanied the film, produced as a result of collaborative research. Also presentations by those who had participated in the project. 100+ attended. Comments, based on 30 evaluation forms, were as follows: What have you learnt tonight How very large the demonstrations were and how widespread. About women I had not heard about and what they stood for and went through. Putting the human aspect/details/ onto the facts. Strength of the movement in the NW. Some very inspiring history. How widespread were the local women who were involved. The bravery of the women to speak out about their concerns in the communities in which they lived and worked. How history has been kept from us and the unsung heroines reminded me of the strength of women and our power. More about a too often overlooked movement. A lot about the women campaigning in the first WW. Also the commitment and enthusiasm of everyone involved in the project. That it's possible to bring people back to life to tell their stories. About the crowds and their bravery. The extent of the women's peace movement. Loads about the bravery of the women, what they did & the potential of a project like this. The quality of it surpassed all my expectations. Only knew a little about the women's peace crusade so learned so much more about the women involved and prominent voices. How amazing + brave the women were. That so many women activists are unknown to history. About the true suffragettes and the stories of their lives. I've learnt loads through being a part of it. Love all the new information. The richness that comes from exploring and sharing our past. Responsibility we have to know those brave women. Lots - history has gaps! Working class women are as amazing now as they were 100 yrs ago. The names and stories of local women. All about it. About the great things they did and that it happened at all. All about the efforts of women to speak out against war. How brave those women were. I didn't know how many were involved. What did you think about the film It was brilliantly edited. Great. I agree with the recommendations of the script-writer that this is a film that should be presented in secondary schools and education young people about these women previously overlooked in History lessons. Just try to bring the film to a bigger audience to inspire + bring support to our younger sisters to continue the fight. Thank-you. Really brilliant project. There was also a presentation by participants and a stall selling the book produced as a result of collaborative research. Comments after the event were as follows, from 18 people who filled in an evaluation sheet: What have you learnt tonight That through history, no one listens to women, government, politicians. Women are powerful en masse. A lot. Lots of history. As a Greenham Common woman I knew of the power women can have. This is so interesting to see the photos of women marching. How hard women fought, against public opinion. The variety of women's organizations at that time. That it was a national/international movement and that so many men were part of the crowds. Lots - range of people/places involved. That I want to know more. That the WPC exists. And that there were protests against WW1. Lots about the women's crusade. The ICR existed and their protests during WW1. Fascinating information about 'ordinary' individual women in smaller towns with great political commitment. Results and Impact	As the WW1 Engagement Centres draw to a close after 6 years of community engagement work we would like to invite you to a reflective discussion event, to take stock of the engagement work that has been done, to reflect on successes and challenges, and to explore potential ways of expanding and continuing to engage with the past. Possible areas for discussion might include: How do we measure what has been delivered over the commemorative period? What infrastructure is required to continue connections created by the WW1 centres and community organisations? How can you ensure success in a project? What have we, as citizen historians & community activists, achieved? The event will be led by Garry Stewart (Recognize Black Heritage & Culture), Kiran Sahota (Believe in Me CIC) and Izzy Mohammed (Future Seed CIC) and supported by the Voices of War and Peace & Everyday Lives in War WW1 Engagement Centres.

Results and Impact	The major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London marked one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War. In the run up to the opening of the installation, Historic Royal Palace's Public Engagement teams worked with researchers to think through some of the issues associated with remembrance in the context of the First World War centenary. This work became the Why Remember? programme which accompanied 'Blood Swept Lands.' It centred on three questions designed to encourage dialogue about how and why we remember: Why should we remember the war? Why are 100 years so significant? How do you want to remember? This film, released at the close of the centenary, and featuring the 'Beyond the Deepening Shadow' installation, encourages people to engage once again with those questions.
