Abstract
The third stage of the Social Change through Creativity and Culture (UK/Brazil CreativeLab) continues to extend knowledge-exchange between academics and arts practitioners in Brazil and the UK in order to discover ways in which the arts and creativity can contribute to social transformation, community wellbeing and economic development.

Planned Impact
The project teams will undertake research to explore how art, design, research and digital technologies can help to build, develop and strengthen cohesive communities of socially-engaged citizens. The concept of Social Change in this context is conceived broadly. Examples in Phase 1 & 2 have included, but are not limited to, the following:
* cultural responses developed in places of violence and conflict;
* entrepreneurial initiatives that are creating new markets and employment within peripheral communities;
* health and wellbeing benefits in the absence of adequate public health care;
* questions about faith and spirituality in the cultural production of social cohesion;
* the challenges of Brazil's models of multi-culturalism in the context of its indigenous and African heritage.
Work in this stage will be seen by the general public, press, and a policy audience both during and after the activities outlined in the research programme. These will include performances of Gambiarra Lab in the UK, a seminar on Public Security and an installation at the Museum of the Art of Rio (Other Registers) and a seminar/performance/installation of the Xingu Utopias project at the Museum of Tomorrow (Rio de Janeiro).
The PI and Co-I team, in partnership with People's Palace Projects, will continue to monitor the projects to conclusion and ensure that documentation includes the impacts of the project outputs.

| Description | The programme has enabled explorations of ways in which creative and cultural exchange activities can increase community agency around issues as urgent as deaths in interactions with police, indigenous land rights, and more equal participation in the creative economy by young Black cultural producers. 'Other Registers' used sonification, SubPac "physical audio" technology and aesthetic design techniques to immerse audiences in an experience communicating the deaths during encounters between police and civilians during the period from 2012 to 2016. In this research, HERITAGE sought to explore how performance-related arts practices can produce and mobilise knowledge about processes of resilience in territorial contexts of armed violence. The creative practice-based methodologies generated new knowledge about challenges facing fragile and vulnerable territories, and produced new narratives whilst ensuring that the research insights continue to register in the community that was the subject of the studies. Maintaining and increasing international public awareness of the high police homicide rate in Brazil is increasingly important to the achievement of SDG16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions - reinforcing the right to justice for all and the need for accountability of the police. HERITAGE has used various practice-based performance methodologies to explore how cultural exchange can support ethical and equitable indigenous development. In this project HERITAGE and AIKAX collaborated to develop a model which was the basis for later exchanges: the research created and piloted an artist residency space in the Ipatse village, which was built according to 1st millennium traditions and subsequently accommodated over 50 international and Brazilian artists in a series of cultural exchanges that supported SDG8 by developing decent work and economic growth in the Ipatse Village. A video documentary of the digital capture and re-materialisation of indigenous material cultures, produced by Factum Foundation with support from HERITAGE, is publicly available from Factum Foundation's website. |
| Exploitation Route | Paul Heritage is still working actively in all three strands of research through People's Palace Projects and in collaboration with Agencia de Redes para Juventude, AIKAX and Redes da Mare in Brazil. In a Follow-On grant, Beyond Exchange (AH/S00582X/1), training provided to 40 young Black cultural producers in Rio de Janeiro as part of equipped them to develop measures to help themselves and funders to understand the socio-economic impact of their own grassroots work in their local territory, and to continue applying these evaluation and monitoring skills to their future work to deepen its socio-economic impact. The results of this work, and impact statements from the beneficiaries, have now been published on a new Cultural Value website: https://culturalvalue.org/dashboard/#/relative-values-ii (results); https://culturalvalue.org/our-stories/our-practice/ (report, Relative Values II); https://culturalvalue.org/our-stories/our-impacts/ (impact statements from the participating producers). The website also includes a toolkit https://culturalvalue.org/our-stories/our-practice/ laying out the methodology followed in the project for others to apply to their own communities and territories. The collaboration with AIKAX has continued to date. In successive projects, HERITAGE explored what had been learnt so far about indigenous research methodologies and how these could be shared and exchanged with other researchers, activists and artists. One outcome of this has been an invitation from ESRC and AHRC to HERITAGE and TAKUMA to co-convene a seminar series on Indigenous Research Methods that supported 12 teams of UK and international researchers to work together in Rio de Janeiro for three days in March 2019 (documented in a series of short films available here: https://peoplespalaceprojects.org.uk/en/indigenous-research-episodes/ ) followed by a webinar in May 2020: https://peoplespalaceprojects.org.uk/en/webinar-indigenous-research/ . These seminars have supported UKRI as they develop codes of good practice in equitable research partnerships with indigenous people. The research undertaken by Factum Foundation during the residency has led to a continuing strand of work with Brazilian Indigenous communities which has resulted in the re-materialization of a sacred set of petroglyphs destroyed by vandalism in late 2018. Factum Foundation produced a book on this project in collaboration with HERITAGE, 'The Sacred Cave of Kamukuwaka', available here: https://peoplespalaceprojects.org.uk/en/publications/the-sacred-cave-of-kamukuwaka-the-preservation-of-indigenous-cultures-in-brazil/ . HERITAGE's collaboration with the Kuikuro continues to attract international interest from cultural organisations who wish to harness the impact of the work that has been developed. A new exhibition based on the is in development for Glasgow Science Centre as part of 'Reimagining Museums for Climate Action', an exhibit for the COP26 Climate Change talks. 'National Future Museum' asks what it would mean to confer museum status on existing indigenous territories that play a key role in climate action - marking a radical step towards recalibrating indigenous engagement in museum practices beyond current discussions on the acquisition, handling and display of their tangible and intangible heritage. Venice Architecture Biennale has also issued an official invitation to HERITAGE and collaborators to create two interconnected installations in the Central Pavilion and the Giardino to celebrate indigenous ways of living in a planet facing crises that require global action, for the postponed 2020 event (now happening in 2021). Following Venice, there has already been interest in taking the installation to cultural venues in North America (Bishops Museum/Hawaii, The Shed/New York) and South America (Museum of Tomorrow/Rio). The depth of the relationship built with the Kuikuro over a series of research grants has helped HERITAGE/People's Palace Projects to develop relationships with journalists to secure major media coverage in Brazil and internationally, which has drawn public attention to indigenous land rights, the impacts of the climate crisis and the COVID-19 emergency on indigenous people, and raised awareness and public debate about human and cultural rights during a period of unprecedented political hostility in Brazil. | Description | Strand 1: Other Registers - November 2016 Other Registers is a sound installation about past, present and future police violence in Rio de Janeiro. This Immersive audio installation based on police homicide data, created in May 2016 in the original CreativeLab showcase at Oi Futuro, was re-mounted and played alongside the Someone to Watch over Me seminar in Rio de Janeiro November 2016 (see previous project description). A composer, a computer scientist, a performance artist, and an academic from Brazil, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland joined forces to transpose the dispassionate nature of Rio's murder rates and turn them into music that could be felt viscerally through a sound installation. They based their work on the statistics for civilian deaths by the Military Police, as compiled and published by Rio de Janeiro State Public Security Department. Official figures show that more than 800 people are killed every year by Rio de Janeiro's State Police, a death rate which is twice as high as all the state police forces of the United States combined. The installation was opened in late November in Complexo da Maré, the largest favela complex in Rio de Janeiro, with the visit of the British delegation to the November seminar of Someone to Watch Over Me who, like all the visitors during its week long presentation, were devastated by the impact of the installation. The installation was subsequently presented to audiences in Seoul (at a conference on music and sound technology) by Samuel van Ransbeeck, encouraging peers in experimental sound technology to explore applying electronic music to social outcomes and to use audio means of presentation of significant data. Further presentations took place on 17-18 March 2018 at the Brian Friel Theatre, Queen's University Belfast, attended by an estimated 60 visitors (mounted by Tori Holmes and Samuel van Ransbeeck); on 15-16 November 2018 at QMUL as part of the Being Human festival, attended by an estimated 70 visitors (mounted by People's Palace Projects, Queen's University Belfast and Samuel van Ransbeeck) https://www.facebook.com/events/queen-mary-university-of-london-artsone/other-registers-part-of-being-human-festival/250980078917140/; and on 28-30 November 2018 at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. Strand 2: The Producers, 18th-27th June 2017 The Producers brought nine emerging Rio producers to London on an exchange week in June 2017 to introduce them to ideas about the creative economy and cultural production in London. They visited venues, met and talked to a range of artists and producers. All of them were operating in some way as producers of arts and cultural activities, either within their own organizations or by running venues and projects set up by others. 8 of them came from organizations that PPP works with regularly in Rio (Agência de Redes para Juventude, Spectaculu Escola de Arte e Tecnologia and Redes da Maré) but all were also part of multiple, complex networks of production. The previous monolithic model of an identity which is constructed around one single cultural institution or organization is not adequate to describe the working creative lives of the new generation. The Producers left London having acquired new knowledge and inspiration for their work in Rio, but also a new network of potential partners. Paul Heritage has built on the learning from this exchange with a successful new research project, "Beyond Exchange", focusing on extending the skills of cultural producers in Rio de Janeiro to measure and narrate the socio-economic value of their work. Strand 3: Xingu Residency 1: 8th-24th May 2017 May 2017 saw the first of two residencies scheduled this year (2017) in the Xingu region of Brazil, Mato Grosso state, the second of which will take place September 2017. Both are funded by AHRC, through two separate follow-on grants; 'Social Change through Creativity 3' (CreativeLab) and 'The Currency of Cultural Exchange' which follows on from one of the case studies in 'The Art of Cultural Exchange'. Contributions were also made to this by PPP Associate and QMUL colleague Jerry Brotton, who raised Strategic Research funding from QMUL School of English & Drama, and from a British Academy Newton Mobility grant to Jerry Brotton with PPP and Brazilian anthropologist Mércio Pereira Gomes for a research exchange on 'Anthropology and the History of Discovery'. 9 visitors spent 10 days in the Xingu followed by 5 days in Rio de Janeiro disseminating the project's results so far. The project team comprised 5 artist-technicians from Factum Foundation, 2 academics from QMUL (Paul Heritage and Jerry Brotton), 1 producer from BBC World Service, and a PPP project manager. Factum Foundation's team worked with 3D, colour and sound recording equipment to develop an artistic response to the Kuikuro community and surroundings. On 23rd May 2017, PPP hosted an event called Creative Lab in Xingu: Art, Technology and Preservation at Rio's Museu do Amanhã, with Adam Lowe (Director, Factum Foundation), Gringo Cardia (Director, Spectaculu), Takumã Kuikuro and Paul Heritage to share the findings and an artistic work in progress with a wider audience. The event was attended by 50 people including anthropologists, linguists, social scientists and artists from Rio. Jerry Brotton also delivered an inspiring seminar in Rio to Mércio Pereira Gomes' students in anthropology, fulfilling one of the terms of the British Academy Newton Mobility grant 'Anthropology and the History of Discovery'. Legacy Adam Lowe (Factum Arte) has committed to providing training of 3D technologies for Spectaculu's students in Rio in future years. Jerry Brotton (Professor of Renaissance Studies, QMUL) and Mark Rickards (BBC World Service producer) recorded a radio documentary with Takumã Kuikuro based on the daily life of the community, that was broadcast on the World Service during 2018. | Results and Impact | The aim of this two week Residency was to build transformative dialogues through digital technologies that enable the Kuikuro people to create 3D maps of their territories and cultures that explore new ways for indigenous peoples to bring the evolving experiences of first millennial ways of life to contemporary debates about Brazilian economic and social development in the third millennium. British digital technology artist Adam Lowe (director of Factum Arte and 3 artist-technicians from Factum Foundation advised representatives of the Xingu peoples on how digital technologies can be purposed by indigenous peoples to preserve and disseminate their culture in a sustainable way. They worked with 3D laser scanning and sound recording technologies to develop an artistic response to the Kuikuro community and surroundings. During the visit, Professor Jerry Brotton and BBC World Service producer Mark Rickards recorded the radio-documentary The Voices of the Amazon with Takumã Kuikuro, based on the daily life of the community. |
