Guernica Remakings, South Africa, research into the practice of cross-cultural translation through making.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Brighton
Department Name: Sch of Humanities

Abstract

Since Pablo Picasso's creation of Guernica (1937), the painting has been reproduced and recreated in many forms traversing the confines of fine art. The Keiskamma Art Project located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa have remade Guernica four times since 2010. Their translation of Picasso's iconic anti-fascist artwork transforms its geography, time and narrative from: Spain to South Africa, from the early 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century, from anti-fascism to the HIV/AIDS crisis. This research project focuses on this process of cross-cultural translation through the creation of a fifth Keiskamma Guernica and asks why Guernica? Exploring what it is about this artwork that lends itself to being adapted. A series of twelve short documentary films record the making of this artwork. The makers will be interviewed and in their own voices will discuss their role in the making process and their insights regarding the visual translation of Guernica to comment on the HIV / AIDS crisis in South Africa. The makers will also be given the opportunity to express their ideas and needs for change, which will be included in the videos creating their vision of the future. The videos will be made widely available through the publication of the videos online through Guernicaremakings.com, via a dedicated channel on Vimeo (Guernica Remakings), You Tube and the University of Brighton repository. The Guernica Remakings exhibition in Brighton, UK (Jul-Aug 2017) is timely it marks the 80th year from the bombing of the town of Guernica. It is a mechanism for ensuring that the transnational relevance of the messages held within the remakings of Guernica can travel to different regions. This is particularly poignant in a period when the UK is withdrawing from Europe, in part, motivated it seems by fear around the freedom of movement of 'others' Guernica's humanitarian message becomes relevant once again calling for solidarity and compassion transcending borders.

Planned Impact

The poorest area of South Africa is in the Eastern Cape, it is here within the Peddie District that this research is focused and seeks to have impact. The Keiskamma Art Project was begun in 2000/01 in this region in the village of Hamburg with the aim of raising self-esteem and contributing to poverty alleviation. The Keiskamma Art Project has a history of translating iconic artworks to speak to South African experience including the Bayeux Tapestry and Picasso's Guernica. This research investigates the practice of translation through making, commissioning the Keiskamma Art Project to create their fifth Kesikamma Guernica. In the short term this commission contributes to the financial success of the Keiskamma Art Project and its employment of over 100+ women directly contributing to poverty alleviation in the Peddie District. In the medium term the designers, artists and embroiderers collectively making the textiles based Guernica will develop skills in media and communication through their participation in the audio visual documentation of the artwork, communicating their role in the making process and their insights regarding the visual translation of Guernica to comment on the HIV / AIDS crisis. The makers will also be given the opportunity to express their ideas and needs for change, which will be included in the videos creating their vision of the future. In the long term the video documentation will provide a platform for the makers to be represented and bring a voice to their lived experience of the HIV / AIDS crisis, in turn building community and individuals self-esteem. The relevance of the research is far reaching connecting internationally with other collective remaking's of Guernica through the publication of the videos online through Guernicaremakings.com, a dedicated channel on Vimeo (Guernica Remakings) and You Tube. The secondary geographical focus, and the project's wider impact potential, is within the UK. The Guernica Remakings exhibition (Jul-Aug 2017) is a mechanism for ensuring that the transnational relevance of the messages can travel to different regions. At a time when the UK has voted to withdraw from Europe, in part, motivated it seems by fear around the freedom of movement of 'others' Guernica's humanitarian message becomes relevant once again calling for solidarity and compassion transcending borders.

Ashmore Nicola (2017) Guernica Remakings

Title Guernica Remakings North with South
Description This is a documentary film of 54:50 minutes in length. It functions as both a record and a resource of the Guernica Remakings exhibition tour and related activities that took place in 2019.
Type Of Art Film/Video/Animation
Year Produced 2020
Impact Evidenced within the film is the impact of this research and how it has advanced collective solidarity and agency within diverse groups and organisations (Keiskamma Art Project, pARTage, Future Hope, Mauritius); created new forms of cultural connection and activist engagement (National Poetry Library, Working Class Movement Library and Kids Guernica); and influenced organisational communication and working practices (Keiskamma Art Project, Future Hope). The film shows the creative workshops and exhibition tours that have brought together 9 international artists and 11 cultural organisations and their local communities in the UK, Mauritius and South Africa, Ashmore's Guernica Remakings has created vital spaces for collaborative reflection upon challenging issues within and across specific locales and cultures. Comprised of maker spaces, public talks and reflections on the making process - facilitated by Ashmore's film documentation of these processes - the workshops have built trusting relationships and given voice to marginalised groups beyond their locale. The film documents the impact of this project and how it has created new cultural connections and forms of activist engagement. For each installation of the Guernica Remakings Exhibition, featured in the film, responds to its location by incorporating contextual materials and inviting local artist and public responses to the work. At the National Poetry Library, London (2019) two poets were commissioned by Ashmore and Chris McCabe, National Poetry Librarian, to write a poetic response to the exhibition which, alongside a public reading, impacted public participation with the work and saw over thirty visual and poetic responses from the general public to the call "what is your Guernica". People displayed their work in the dedicated display space in the exhibition. Ashmore's Guernica Remakings project has initiated further cultural iterations across 3 countries (UK, South Africa, Mauritius,) involving 9 individual artists and 4 artist collectives. Notably Saradha Soobrayen's Chagosnica (2017-2019) - explored the forcible removal of Chagossians from the Chagos islands by the UK government between 1971-1973. This was inspired by the Guernica Remakings 2017 exhibition in Brighton. Ashmore collaborated on the 2019 tour with 3 international artists, 5 artists from the Keiskamma Art Project, local Mauritian arts organisations, and children's charity Future Hope. This enabled 50 children from disadvantaged families in Port Louis (many of whom do not go to school) to explore their visions of the future and promote a message of peace, through the production of their own Kids Guernica, Mauritius (2019) on a large scale canvas. This has since been exhibited in Japan. The collaborative art making process helped facilitate dialogue 'between different cultures, respecting each identity..to create a community all around the world with children'.

Title Guernica Remakings exhibition, 2017
Description Guernica Remakings exhibition held at the University of Brighton Gallery from 31 July to 23 August 2017 encouraged reflection on the role and value of Pablo Picasso's Guernica through artworks remade in its image. The voices of those involved in making artworks were heard alongside the curator and maker Dr Nicola Ashmore.
Type Of Art Artistic/Creative Exhibition
Year Produced 2017
Impact Within the gallery three areas were dedicated to encourage participation. There was a work space complete with table, chairs, jigsaw, paper, pens and an exhibition trail which invited people to create their own Guernica. A pin board was erected to allow participants to put their Guernica's up on the gallery wall - both were well used throughout the duration of the exhibition. Another pin board invited the general public to display posters and literature related to political activity they were involved in. All of this activity was led by the exhibition visitors and consequently caused an expansion to the socio-political scope present in the gallery. The work space was also open as a bookable meeting space. This prompted a residency in the gallery by London based poet Saradha Soobrayen - a collaboration between Saradha and Maude Casey a Brighton based writer and activist and a meeting of a local group who are embarking on the collective creation of a protest banner.

Description The award objectives were all met. Through the commissioning and documentation of the creation of a fifth small scale Keiskamma Guernica by the Kesikamma Art Project two significant achievements were made. First a series of 12 short videos were created that capture the making of the textile based Guernica. The practice of translation through making is documented in the videos and now freely available to the project participants and the public through the project website GuernicaRemakings.com; through a dedicated channel on Vimeo and through the University of Brighton repository. The videos record the collective artistic practices, technical textiles processes and developmental impact of the remakings of Guernica by the Keiskamma Art Project, South Africa. Significantly a form of empowered textiles art practice is identified in the videos. The makers developed skills in media and communication through their participation in the documentation of the artwork. Through semi-structured interviews the makers gained the experience of communicating their role in the making process and expressing their insights regarding the visual translation of Guernica to comment on the HIV / AIDS crisis. The makers voiced their ideas and needs for change locally and nationally, which are included in the videos creating their vision of the future for South Africa with a focus on improving education. Second, the exhibition Guernica Remakings was curated that features the commissioned Keiskamma Guernica (2017) alongside other remaking's of Guernica , this was exhibited from 31 July - 23 August 2017 in Brighton, UK.
Exploitation Route The findings of the project have been taken forward in a book that was launched at the Guernica Remakings exhibition in 2017 and has been distributed by John Rule since.

As part of AHRC GCRF follow-on funding received the Guernica Remakings exhibition toured with an accompanying Learning Lab. It went to the Working Class Movement Library in Salford 31 January - 21 March 2019. From Salford the exhibition and Learning Lab traveled to Mauritius for March and April 2019 and then on to The National Poetry Library at the Southbank Centre 26 July - 23 September 2019.

Description The PI returned to South Africa in July 2018 to screen the 'making of films' created as part of this funded project. The films show the creation of the small-scale textile artwork Keiskamma Guernica, 2017. This was a closed screening to members of the Keiskamma Art Project, including some of those who feature in the films. There was an exhibition on at the University of Johannesburg that included a retrospective of the Keiskamma Art Projects work, so we agreed to meet in J'burg. As part of the exhibition three films that the PI had directed and produced were on display. These focused on the first and largest Keiskamma Guernica created in 2010. The impact interviews following the closed screening were very moving. They had learnt things about each other that caused some shock, the ongoing grief people experience day to day and the isolation they feel and lack of support after family members have died. This instigated a conversation about what could be done to offer more support to one another. Regular support groups and workshops were suggested to give an outlet for the grief and the loss experienced. The films prompted a discussion on raising the profile of free local counselling services, and it was suggested that inviting counselors to general meetings to encourage others to make appointments with them would be trialed. The impact interview led to a discussion about what is going on now with regards to peoples lived and everyday experience of HIV / AIDS. People are dying again, some are hiding their illness. Some are no longer taking their medication; medication fatigue was mentioned - cases where people get fed up of taking their medication; they feel fine so they stop taking it and begin to get very unwell again. It was noted that ongoing education was needed. And suggested that an expert could be invited to come and explain what happens when you skip your medication or you stop taking it altogether. The films it was agreed were beneficial creating a space to let people tell their story, and to let people know they have been heard.

Results and Impact The curator's tour took place in the pop-up version of the Guernica Remakings exhibition. Participating children and adults were invited to engage in the exhibition through accompanying drawing exercises and a curated talk given by Dr Nicola Ashmore. The curator talk was adapted to ensure it was suitable for the mixed age group, which included the use of body language, gestures, enactments, simplified and informal language. The talk had to be adapted to be suitable for live in person translation to Xhosa by the respective project collaborators, who stood in front of the artworks alongside the curator. This meant that the pace of delivery was adapted and at times words explained. The talk began by spotlighting Pablo Picasso's experience as a child of being taken to bull fights, where he witnessed the suffering and death of the matador's horse and the bull. This highlighted the significance and value of personal experience and personal iconography. This practice of using personal experience and familiar and meaningful imagery was discussed in the other artworks on display. This focus on the use of a personal iconography in the artworks on display validated the project's approach and encouraged the children to use their own personal experience and iconography within the canvas design.

Results and Impact On Wednesday 18 November 2020 I gave a presentation at King's College London, Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. This is the summary of the talk:

Picasso's iconic artwork of 1937 is explored anew through a series of 21st century remakings by Dr Nicola Ashmore curator of the touring exhibition Guernica Remakings.
Guernica Remakings features artwork from across the globe that creates resonances with the original work and reveals a range of cultural and political histories from Spain, to Afghanistan, Canada, the Chagos Islands, India, Iraq, Palestine, South Africa, Syria and the UK. Dr Ashmore will share her evolving understanding of Picasso's Guernica through the lens of a selection of 21st century translations.

This sparked questions and discussions focused upon my research methodologies, and further engagement in the Guernica remakings project through the viewing of a number of the related films.

Results and Impact On the 25 January 2023 an introductory talk focusing on the Guernica Remakings project in South Africa launched the Kids' Guernica art and peace workshop with children and families from the Ukraine and Spain. The talk was adapted for children of Primary School age. This workshop was hosted by Espronceda Institute of Art and Culture in Barcelona, Spain and was part of the Cultural Diplomacy, Peace, Solidarity, Art and Diplomacy project run by Savina Tarsitano, co-founder of Espronceda in partnership with the German Consulate in Barcelona. Espronceda reported an increased interest in the workshop over the subsequent month that led to the completion of the large scale peace painting 7m long by 3m wide. Plans have been made to exhibit the Kids' Guernica peace painting in Nepal in April 2023 and Japan in August 2023.
