Idioms of Distress, Resilience and Well-Being: Enhancing understanding about mental health in multilingual contexts

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: School of Education

Abstract

This project aims to extend research presently in Ghana, Gaza, Uganda and Zimbabwe by focusing on the way local languages are used to express distress and well-being. Specifically the proposed research aims to enhance understanding about how capabilities can be developed by drawing on local idioms - of well-being, resilience and distress. Arts and humanities perspectives will be brought together with the existing Global Mental Health literature to develop innovative ways of translating these idioms with greater sensitivity to the context in which they have emerged. IN particular the place of the local environment and its importance for expression of pain and of resilience and well-being will be analysed.

Proposed Activities: In order to achieve this aim this proposal will:
a) engage in desk research to conduct a comparative literature review of expressions of distress, resilience and well-being in both the medical literature on mental health and in language studies and anthropology.
b) Conduct fieldwork in-situ and digitally, using story-generating methodologies which encourage participants to tell stories about their languages and their use of words in translingual contexts and research sites with researchers and story-tellers.
c) Embed the data collected into programmes which raise awareness of the importance of multilingual sensitivity for working cross-culturally and which aim to mainstream approaches to well-being in populations under pain and pressure.
d) Translate linguistic data into artistic expressions through an intercultural, multilingual, production and conference, which create wider impacts through training programmes in each context.
Fieldwork will take place in the ODA compliant contexts represented in the large grant either in the existing case studies or through the researchers' languages i.e. Ghana, Uganda, Gaza Strip, Zimbabwe and with new arrival refugees in Glasgow. By using the language story-generating methodologies we will strengthen cultural practices and intangible cultural heritage which is at risk, and mitigate the damage which can occur through a lack of methodological flexibility and sensitivity to the experience of researching multilingually in contexts of conflict or duress. By representing the data generated artistically, we will produce performance and digital materials for use in training and human development activities for both intercultural and local contexts.

Planned Impact

Key umbrella organisations identified for dissemination activities involving intercultural and multilingual collaboration focused on new arrival refugee populations in UK are Creative Scotland where the PI will develop a workshop in language-sensitive refugee arts and integration; Scottish Refugee Council's Refugee Festival Co-ordinator where the film based activities will be planned into the annual Festival research stream supported by a workshop focused on the 'languaging of distress'; Contacts have been established with Freedom from Torture (https://www.freedomfromtorture.org) and International Committee of the Red Cross (https://www.icrc.org). Through work with Mark Maughan (National Theatre Director) a series of workshops will be held as 'wrap-around' activity for his major production, now in pre-production phase, The Claim. The national campaign organisation Right to Remain (http://righttoremain.org.uk) and Detention Action (http://detentionaction.org.uk) are exploring a contribution to revise their detention tool-kit including a section on the languaging of distress, well-being and resilience. The Right to Remain toolkit is the main resource of support for asylum seekers and refugees in the UK and also in Calais. For dissemination through care-givers in the context of Global Mental Health Co-I White has existing relationships with CBM International (http://www.cbm.org), BasicNeeds (http://www.basicneeds.org), Marc van Ommeren at the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at the World Health Organization; Peter Ventevogel at the Public Health Section at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; and 'Pan African Network of People with Psychosocial Disabilities': https://www.facebook.com/PANPPD/ In Ghana: The School of Performing Arts and African Humanities Institute; Media organisations have been identified working to mitigate the effects of fractured education. Noyam (http://www.westartfrica.com/item/noyam-african-dance-institute-accra-2/) and Pan African Arts Musicians (http://gameli.co.uk). In Uganda: Caritas Uganda; TPO Uganda (http://www.healthnettpo.org/en/), BasicNeeds Foundation Uganda, Strong Minds (https://strongminds.org/staff/strongminds-uganda-team/). In Zimbabwe: Festivals for the Arts enabling dissemination of language-based arts and story-telling: Hifa; Shoka; Chibuku. In Gaza: Graduates of the Islamic University Gaza (http://www.iugaza.edu.ps/en/; The Ministry of Culture; PNGO; UNWRA, Medical Aid to Palestine, Women's Union.
This proposal focuses on idioms of distress, resilience and well-being across four ODA contexts and on their value in promoting well-being in multilingual contexts of duress and distress. The proposed research will enhance both vertical articulation capacities (i.e. the interface between stakeholders involved in the research and (inter)national policy makers) and horizontal articulation capacities (i.e. the interface between the research stakeholders and change-makers working in other sectors) (Lederach, 1995).

Beneficiaries for this research have been identified as follows:
1. care-giving organisations needing to work multilingually with survivors of violence, refugees and displaced peoples; mental health practitioners.
2. policy-makers responsible for refugee arrivals; internally displaced; third-country arrivals.
3. organizations working in post-conflict contexts and organizations multilateral understandings of refugee integration, especially in Europe and North America, where host populations are involved in the mitigation of distress.
4. global actors and NGOs campaigning to improve reception facilities in post-conflict and refugee arrival contexts; for humanitarian corridors; and for improved administration of asylum claims.
5. the general public, especially in resettlement contexts where capacity building of volunteers has been identified as an urgent need by partner organisations.

Description Indigenous, multilingual and mother tongue knowledge of idioms of distress, wellbeing and resilience can contribute to and enhance mental wellbeing and resilience in contexts of displacement and distress, especially where there is mental health stigma and where there is no access to pyschotherapeutic services.
Exploitation Route Using performance and attending to idioms of distress, well being and resilience multilingually to benefit global mental health.

The use of the data during the global covid 19 pandemic and its development has demonstrated further the practical applications of idiom based multilingual communication for populations who are at risk of being excluded by dominant language chains of communication.

Description In field context for Global Mental Health training and awareness raising and with partners in Gaza, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Uganda. This data provided the basis for the research design for new projects, CUSP and AMIF and for the multilingual working with MIDEQ has fed into the Royal Society of Edinburgh, New Scots and BEMIS work on interpreting and idioms of resilience during the global COVID 19 pandemic, especially in order to encourage vaccination uptake in ethnic minority groups. It has also been used to build safeguarding resources for use in Gaza, Zimbabwe, Scotland, Mexico, Morocco and Ghana. The foundational intellectual work that was tested as a part of IOD has been further developed through the MIDEQ project (https://www.mideq.org/en/) there is now a special issue in press taking the work of IOD into a wider public examining the discourse and lived experience of South-South migration.

Results and Impact On 10 December 2020, Human Rights Day UNESCO Art-Lab hosted a special event "The imperative of cultural justice: arts for inclusion, equity and human rights."

The Art-Lab Platform was initiated during a Design Thinking workshop co-organized by UNESCO and OHCHR in Geneva, in February 2020, bringing together practitioners, cultural operators, artists, experts in human rights, cultural rights and intercultural dialogue, and humanitarian workers. The workshop resulted in a workplan to mainstream the arts in humanitarian and development programmes, based on three major pillars:

Raising awareness within UN agencies and other stakeholders on the transformative power of art and culture in humanitarian work;
Consolidating the Art-Lab Platform in facilitating exchanges between cultural and humanitarian workers, artists and researchers;
Strengthening research and capacity-building, and pilot-testing tools in the field.

At the event on 10 December, members of the Art-Lab platform presented findings and recommendations of the four working groups. A key issue running through the entire programme is the exploration of the idea that cultural rights might be brought to embrace cultural justice. What new spaces can be accessed through such a move and with what gains for human rights and dignity?

This event featured RILA Artists in Residence Dr Gameli Tordzro and Tawona Sitholé, and UNESCO Chair Prof Alison Phipps.

Results and Impact This workshop run by the Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution and inlcuded Alison Phipps (CUSP PI), Prof. Nazmi Al Mansri (CUSP Co-I, at Islamic University of Gaza), Mr Chirikure Chirikure (CUSP Co-I, at Litfest Harare) and Ms Chipo Basopo (CUSP non-academic lead, CHIPAWO) discussed their lived experience, so we can better learn from those with long experience of living with conflict, not least from the Gaza strip and Zimbabwe. In particular the role of the arts and the role of languages in breaking the strangle holds of conflict, as well as re-casting difficult subjects which colonise mainstream understandings in particularly unhelpful ways will be a theme in the conversation.

Panelists will use story telling to unpack complexity and focus on human dignity, showing how a story is both an anecdote and an antidote. The vaccination potential of the arts and well chosen words against viral fears will be a central themes of the conversation. The issues of conflict and poverty and oppression which lead people to seek asylum will them allow us to weave together stories in specific conflicts with the epic stories of exile, it's experience and it's transformation and it's potency in human history.

Cyrenians are keen to work together with CUSP on similar events.

Results and Impact Solas Festival is hosting a unique showcase of cultural events under the theme of Home in partnership with Prof. Alison Phipps, the first UNESCO Chair in Refugee Integration through Languages and the Arts; GRAMNet, and the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
Alison's work relates to the themes of home, land, languages - mother tongues and acquired languages, of refugee and asylum and displacement and of the way in which the arts and spirituality in particular might aid processes of integration and new belongings in communities providing a home for those who have been displaced.
Alison's inaugural UNESCO Chair lecture, which takes place at the University of Glasgow on 20 June, is fully booked, but she will be repeating her lecture for us in this very special event during the Festival.
The lecture will explore the role language and arts play in societal integration, and the creative processes at work in intercultural encounters. In particular, it will offer a critique and development of the existing understanding of integration, and explore new possibilities. The lecture will involve the work of Gameli Tordzro and Tawona Sithole, artists-in-residence with the UNESCO Chair.

Results and Impact The UNESCO RILA team marked UNESCO's 75th with our event "Spotlight Eritrea". Eritreans make up a significant worldwide diaspora of people who have sought sanctuary and the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of this small country in the Horn of Africa is immense. We celebrated the culture of our friends and colleagues in Eritrean communities worldwide with a cultural and critical presentation which recognised Asmara World Heritage Site, which received designation in 2017, and other ancient sites in Eritrea. Research shows UNESCO World Heritage Sites contribute many of the Sustainable Development Goals, including
SDG3 Good Health and Wellbeing student
SDG11 Sustainable Cities and Communities
SDG17 Partnerships for the Goals
The event combined conversation with a traditional Eritrean coffee ceremony performed by Prof Alison Phipps, the ceremony by which peace is made or restored to families, communities and ethnic groups. Participants experienced the sounds and sights, but sadly not the smells(!) of this important cultural practice. After the event registered participants received a care package from the team so they could conduct their own coffee ceremony!
