None in Three(Ni3) - A Centre for the Development, Application, Research and Evaluation of Prosocial Games for the Prevention of Gender-based Violence

Lead Research Organisation: University of Huddersfield
Department Name: Sch of Human and Health Sciences

Abstract

VISION - To create a global research centre dedicated to research and serious gaming interventions designed to prioritise the rights of girls and women to live a life free from violence and to prevent violence against those most vulnerable (UN Sustainable Development Goal no. 5; UK Aid Strategy obj.4). The inter-disciplinary, cross-cultural, trans-continental research and partnership platform we will establish will result in a cadre of social scientists and game developers from four ODA-listed countries and the UK, skilled in the development of frontier technologies, advanced research methodologies and policy formulation focused on changing the social and cultural drivers of gender-based violence. This will be known as The DARE Centre: the Centre for the Development, Application, Research and Evaluation of Prosocial Games for the Prevention of Gender-based Violence.

International women rights agreements and domestic laws on gender-based violence (GBV) constitute an important step towards its prevention and elimination. However, there is an implementation gap between policy directives and what happens on the ground and unless people understand why regulations should be observed, they can be ineffective. Furthermore policy-led approaches do little to address the underlying cultural attitudes and values that drive GBV. Therefore, key to reducing violence against women and girls are innovative educational and social strategies which recognize the changing world we live within and challenge GBV related attitudes while they are being formed. Targeting children and youths seems crucial for transforming societies and creating a lasting change to the situation of women worldwide. Based on a unique partnership between institutions in the UK, China, Jamaica, Pakistan and Uganda, (the DARE countries) the Centre will build on the University of Huddersfield's existing domestic violence prevention project 'None in Three' (www.noneinthree.org), to expand the social/cultural impact of prosocial games for the prevention of GBV globally. As evidenced by a growing body of research, the development of game technologies has created new outlets for the perpetration of GBV. However, given the appeal of novel technologies to younger generations, technological advancements may also be utilised for prosocial purposes to empower victims and catalyze action against violence. In recent years, researchers and educators have become increasingly aware of the potential benefits of prosocial video games. Unlike other media, video games scaffold children's experience using narrative and audio-visual content, as well as rules and objectives regulating players' behaviour. A recent meta-analytic study revealed a significant association between playing a prosocial video game and positive social outcomes (Greitemeyer & Mügge, 2014). Violent video games, in turn, lead to a bias in the perception of what counts as aggressive, which evokes aggressive behaviour. Importantly, appropriately designed prosocial video games can enhance moral reasoning and foster empathy in a way that the mere presentation of facts through other media outlets cannot accomplish. Empathy reduces aggression and leads to prosocial actions, which strengthen social bonds and integrates societies. Indicative areas of work for the DARE Centre include: China - promoting a culture of protection against sexual abuse and prevention of trafficking; Jamaica - challenging the commoditization of sex and its relationship to the commercial sexual exploitation of children and promoting a culture of personal accountability among men and boys; Pakistan-improving child protection systems in relation to child marriage and honour killings, Uganda-domestic violence, the prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation and child marriage and, the UK-interpersonal violence within adolescent relationships. These activities all seek to prevent gender based violence and elevate the status of women and girls.

Planned Impact

Academic impact - knowledge production, researcher development and inter-disciplinary collaboration
1. training researchers in the most advanced qualitative and quantitative social sciences research and analytic methods for GBV research;
2. conducting original research into socio-cultural drivers and aetiology of particular forms of GBV in contributing countries;
3. producing psychosocial profiles of attitudes to GBV among children and young people in the five DARE countries;
4. archiving datasets for wider access;
5. producing high quality open access journal articles including inter-disciplinary co-authored outputs (social work, psychology, criminology, digital games, education);
6. incorporation of research findings into university courses (evidence-based practice courses);
7. equipping early career researchers with skills in research leadership;
8. improving career prospects for early career researchers.

Policy impact
1. training on policy evaluation, analysis and formulation

6. new knowledge on the attitudes of children and young people to GBV

Societal/community/family impact
1. computer games as a tool to be used in education settings with children and young people to: increase empathy, non-adversarial conflict resolution skills, challenge gender stereotypes, raise awareness about women's rights, empower victims, counter cultural values which contribute to GBV, foster cultures of accountability rather than victim blaming and to build emotional intelligence
2. utilising the computer games as an aid to rehabilitation programmes for persons convicted of GBV crimes;
3. establishing The IDEA, a media hub of Impact, Dissemination and Engagement Activities to engage multiple audiences using multiple methods and wide-reaching social media
4. implementing a series of awareness-raising events for community groups and producing sensitisation films on GBV and the need for family and community engagement in supporting behaviour change
5. training GBV civil society organisations in creating their own strategies for engaging the public in discussions that promote and facilitate shifts in thinking
6. training for media technicians in the production of public engagement films
7. engagement of faith-based and civil society organisations;
8. general public/parent meetings focusing on raising awareness and development of shared responsibility for GBV prevention
9. encouraging help-seeking behaviours from victims and perpetrators of GBV
10. the wider adoption of anti-violence computer games and resultant changes in attitudes and reduction of GBV measured through the application of robust pre-post game exposure surveys

Description We have conducted qualitative research with over 300 survivors and perpetrators of different forms of gender-based violence; this has enabled us to identify its social and cultural drivers in four diverse countries. This research has been used to draw up Policy Briefs (see link below) and we have developed Stakeholder/Government Engagement Strategies for each country to help enable maximum reach and impact of these policy implications. These strategies provide for public engagement events and policy forums in each of the four countries and additionally, we have translated findings into public education messaging and YouTube videos which have been posted on our social media platforms. We have highlighted the completion of the qualitative research in our external newsletter and conference papers on the findings have been delivered at:

• Utech Innovation Day, Jamaica (Apr19);
• African Studies Association Annual Meeting in Boston (Nov 2019);
• The Ministry of Health & Wellness 10th Annual National Health Research Conference, Jamaica (Nov19);
• Indian Association of Women's Studies Annual Conference, Delhi (Jan20);
• International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect conference, Qatar (Feb20);
• Caribbean Studies Association Conference on Gender Dimensions of Violence Prevention, UWI, Jamaica (Jul20);
• Association of Caribbean Social Work Educators Conference, Trinidad (online) (Jun21);
• European Conference on Domestic Violence, Ljubljana (online) (Sep21)

The findings have informed responses to government consultations related to gender-based violence in Jamaica and the UK. The reports of the qualitative research (and separate Executive Summaries) are available on the project website: http://www.noneinthree.org/portfolio/qualitative-reports/ and two academic journal articles have been published from findings to date.

In addition, we have engaged with Ministries of Education and with schools to carry out psychosocial surveys of young people aged 10 to 18 years, assessing their exposure to violence and the impact this has on mental health and wellbeing. We have conducted this survey with 30,000 children across the partnership. This is a highly significant data set which addresses a knowledge gap and furthers understanding of children's exposure to violence, child abuse and neglect and mental health issues, as well as enabling comprehensive and comparative analysis within and between countries. Data analysis has been completed for all four study countries with publications arising out of each data set; three journal articles have been published to date, and findings presented at both the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN) International Congress, Milan, Italy (online) (Jun21) and the European Society of Criminology Annual Conference (online) (Sep 2021). We shared emerging results with partners early in order that they could identify urgent pathways to inform and update relevant government departments to alert them to the mental health risks to children of their exposure to violence.

In addition to these outcomes, we have used the empirical research to create game development frameworks which enable matching of the game design process to key principles (e.g. children's rights and sustainable development goals) and, we have completed research-based Schemes of Work (wrap-around curricular materials which are designed to be complementary to the games and at the same time, to stand alone as important outputs in their own right. These Schemes of Work are an innovative product which will build teacher capacity and skills in tackling GBV in schools.

We have drawn on both our qualitative and quantitative research to develop and publish Policy Briefs for governments and relevant agencies (http://www.noneinthree.org/global-policy-hub/). We have disseminated these outputs widely through social media, newsletters, policy forums and stakeholder engagement meetings.

We have evaluated the impact of two of our four prosocial video games (those developed for Uganda and the UK) through randomised controlled trials in four schools in Uganda and seven schools in the UK, and conducted qualitative interviews with teachers to understand the barriers and enablers to future use of the games in educational settings. The trial of the Uganda game found modest, short-term positive impacts for both girls and boys on attitudes towards child marriage and feeling empowered to prevent child marriage. The findings have recently been published in 'Computers in Human Behaviour'. The findings from the UK game trial revealed that adolescents who played the gaming intervention demonstrated a significant decline in positive attitudes towards sexual abuse online, psychological abuse (both on and offline) and controlling behaviours. While these findings in themselves are promising, we anticipate that deeper and more sustained learning from the games would require scaffolding though the use of additional curricular activities and opportunities for repeat the gameplay to test out the consequences of alternative decisions, to create meaningful, sustained changes.
Exploitation Route Our qualitative research will be used to inform gender policy, to improve professional practice, to increase access to justice for survivors and public education information. Our survey data will be used by partner institutions to update governments and civil society organisations and to inform policy and programming for child protection and child mental health services. Our game evaluation frameworks will be published as tools for the gaming industry to further prosocial gaming for the prevention of GBV. Our Game Development Frameworks are of value to those working in the field of serious gaming; to our knowledge, they are no other systematic approaches which marry empirical research with game design principles. Our Schemes of Work will be published as discrete outputs in their own right - these are designed to build capacity among professionals working with children in tackling gender-based violence.

Description Findings from qualitative research have been used to generate story lines and characterisations for prosocial computer games which address sexual coercion in the context of child marriage in Uganda, violence against women in India, adult-perpetrated child sexual abuse in Jamaica and adolescent dating abuse in the UK. Additionally, findings have been used to generate social media outputs for public engagement purposes. The emerging results of the surveys on the prevalence of child exposure to violence and its mental health impacts (carried out in all four countries) have been released for governments and civil society organisations so that action can be taken to strengthen services for the prevention of self-harm and suicide. In addition to these outcomes, we have used the empirical research to develop game development frameworks which enable matching of the game design process to key principles (e.g. children's rights and sustainable development goals) and, we have completed research-based Schemes of Work (wrap-around curricular materials which are designed to be complementary to the games and at the same time, to stand alone as important outputs in their own right. These Schemes of Work are an innovative product which will build teacher capacity and skills in tackling GBV in schools. Research reports and publications from both the quantitative and qualitative research have been published and widely disseminated via social media. They have also been used to generate Policy Briefs and public engagement activities; feedback indicates that our work is having a significant impact in improving professional practice, general awareness of the effects of gender-based violence and that government departments are exploring how to make best use of our interventions and the knowledge we have produced. The two games and the associated Schemes of Work, that had been trialled before the completion of the project were made freely accessible on the Ni3 website. In the past year the UK game has been downloaded 267 times and the Uganda game has been downloaded 63 times (with each download possibly leading to game play by 100s of young people).

Results and Impact None in Three Research Centre, India hosted nine students from the American School of Bombay (ASB) along with two teachers at the Design Innovation Creativity and Entrepreneurship (DICE) Ecosystem. The students were from grade 6th to 8th and were part of their school's Community Social Responsibility program developing their understanding around gender equality and figuring out possible solution to raise awareness about the same. A three-hour session was formulated to engage the students as well as talk about work at Ni3 India.

At the beginning, the students were taken on a tour of the Design school that gave them a perspective of our institute's functioning. Mr. Bhanu Varma, Co-Country Director, Ni3, addressed the students to give them a brief overview on the functioning of the Ni3 Global research center. The workshop then began with Ms. Rukmini Banerjee, Ni3 India Research Fellow, introducing the concept of gender bias with the help of social media outputs that were created previously by the Media gathering team. The students were able to identify the cultural implications of gender bias as they shared their experiences in different countries. Some could relate to the discomfort and some mentioned similarities. Their teacher further prompted them to reflect upon whether the discomfort was impressed upon them or did they feel so from within.

With the help of our social media outputs the students were made aware of how gender bias manifests in everyday lives of women and men. They were especially sensitive to and reactive about the portrayal of superheroes and the lack of women superheroes in comics and in films.

Results and Impact Ni3 held its first ever annual conference bringing together both academic and technical staff from across all four of our GCRF study countries, as well as welcoming colleagues from Ni3 Brazil to their first cross-centre event. Sessions were held online from Monday to Friday and we were delighted to welcome both delegates and speakers from all across the global Ni3 family. The week started with two days of pre-conference workshops, aimed at early career researchers and recent graduates, and intended to highlight some key skills that are essential for our researchers in carrying out their work. These sessions covered research ethics, writing research proposals, cultural competence and general 'top tips' for researchers. We were delighted with both the attendance at these sessions and with the feedback that we received from attendees. The main conference sessions ran from Wednesday to Friday and we were delighted to be able to include representatives from across all areas of the work of None in Three. Our lively and engaging programme included over 20 sessions across the three days and gave our delegates a real taste for the work of the Centre through short, insightful sessions exploring key areas of our ground-breaking research into gender-based violence. Taken together these conference sessions provided a great oversight of the globally pioneering work of None in Three.

Thousands participated in the Ni3 Uganda research: more than 11,000 young people responded to a school-based survey, and qualitative interviews and focus groups were held with more than 200 people. Kicking off their roadshow to disseminate findings, the team visited Lira district, presenting to audiences keen to learn more about how their participation has informed the Ni3 research. As part of their presentations, the team have showcased 'Peace', the pro-social computer game designed and developed by the None in Three Centre, based on the Ni3 Uganda research, and targeted specifically at Ugandan young people. This is an important and innovate innovative educational tool to empower young people to choose alternative paths to child marriage, and to be aware of, and call out the risks associated with early marriage, such as sexual coercion. Results and Impact This was an engaging discussion about the ways in which we might tackle the issue of child abuse, particularly child sexual abuse in the Nigerian context. It was noteworthy that the dominant discourse tended to focus on children having responsibility for protecting themselves and thus was at odds with the whole system approach that we would apply in the Global North - with particular emphasis on the role of educating parents and communities, rather than burdening children with managing the behaviours of the adults in their lives.

Results and Impact The Design Issue - addressing the crucial part design plays across the Ni3 Research Centre's multi-faceted work. A concern for good design permeates each stage of the research and development of Ni3's prosocial computer games, and the communication of Ni3's message about preventing gender-based violence. In line with Dieter Rams' 10 Design Principles, Ni3 strives, in all of our design work, to be innovative, honest and thorough to the last detail, and this newsletter demonstrates just a few examples of how we achieve this.

Discussions centred around the need to:
• Understand the complexity & impact of perpetrator behaviours
• Ensure professionals are informed and offer effective victim-led interventions
• Educate young people about healthy relationships & challenge the normalisation of abuse
• Ensure that programmes change behaviours & hold perpetrators accountable
• Develop new ways of working in order to stop this silent pandemic
