Our Bondage and Our Freedom: Struggles for Liberty in the Lives and Works of Frederick Douglass and His Family (1818-1920)

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Literature Languages & Culture

Abstract

Working to develop an alternative interdisciplinary framework, this project investigates the legendary example of Frederick Douglass as a renowned formerly enslaved and self-emancipated liberator in conjunction with the under-researched biographies and writings authored by his daughters and sons: Rosetta, Lewis Henry, Frederick Jr., Charles Remond and Annie Douglass. By reinterpreting the writings of the mythologised figure of Frederick Douglass within the context of his neglected family members, it is possible to reconceptualise dominant scholarly paradigms according to which the iconic and exceptional few are theorised over and above the individual and invisibilised many when it comes to black lives. An interdisciplinary project drawing together early, mid and senior career academics, activists, archivists and artists and aimed at specialist and general audiences, this proposed research consists of a literary biography, a family biography/scholarly anthology, a UK exhibition, 2 US companion exhibits, guided exhibition and Edinburgh black history city tours, a public educational programme, an academic conference, a US workshop on engaged scholarship, 2 refereed journal special issues, a commemorative plaque, an exhibition guide and 4 educational learning guides and online resources for use in universities, schools, adult-learning environments and by the general public.
At the heart of this project is the conviction that the only way in which to do justice to the under-researched writings and artworks produced by black women, children and men bought and sold into transatlantic slavery, and for whom the written word and the image remained contested terrain, is to develop a cross-, multi- and inter- disciplinary scholarly practice. Dominant theoretical models do not apply. Researchers must develop alternative analytical approaches in order to examine black authored literary and visual arts traditions forged in the interstices of legal, physical, cultural, historical, psychological and imaginative subjugation. Just as black authors and artists developed self-reflexively experimental textual and visual practices as they took on the burden of representation by acknowledging that, as Douglass insisted, "language has no power" and "images are mute" when faced with the impossibility of representing the tragedies of chattel slavery and its traumatising legacies, we as scholars must take on the burden of interpretation by developing a new theoretical language. I take the view that we are not there yet by arguing for the intellectual and political necessity of working with interdisciplinary methodologies within Black Studies, African Diasporic Studies, Slavery Studies, American Studies, Memory Studies and Social Justice Studies as the only way in which to investigate the otherwise missing historical, social, cultural, philosophical, ideological, political, psychological and aesthetic contexts of black lives. I take inspiration from Audre Lorde to argue that an interdisciplinary examination of black literary and visual arts traditions establishes that it is not the "master's tools" but the "slaves' tools" that succeed in "dismantling" the "master's house."
During the two-hundred year anniversary of his birth in 2018 and in a Black Lives Matter era, the Douglass needed now is no representative self-made man but a fallible, mortal individual. It was not only Douglass but his family members who despaired of "committing to paper the pain" they experienced as the "wounds upon the soul" defied textual or visual expression. The onus is on academics, archivists, artists and activists to harness every intellectual tool available in order to tell the story not only of the enslaved but of black women and men experiencing freedoms that were in name only in a post-emancipation era. For Douglass' rallying cry, "My Bondage and My Freedom" it is possible to read: "Our Bondage and Our Freedom."

Planned Impact

Our Bondage and Our Freedom is the culmination of my decades of Black Studies research, writing and knowledge exchange and has already generated impact for users and beneficiaries outside UK/US academic research communities including: individuals (artists, archivists, curators, librarians, teachers, students, public educators); organisations (museums, galleries, historic sites); groups (BME and African American communities, local historians). The potential for generating impact on these and other users and beneficiaries of this research is as follows:
1) The digital files of the Douglass and family manuscripts and photographs held in the Walter O Evans Collection will directly benefit the Walter O Evans Foundation for Art and Literature's mission of making black history and culture available to US curators, librarians, teachers, community workers, activists, students and public historians through regional networks (Friends of African American Arts, Telfair Museums; Savannah College of Art and Design Museum; Savannah Black Heritage Festival) and internationally (NLS/FDNHS/ BDM).
2) The Strike for Freedom exhibition will directly benefit the National Library of Scotland's mission of inspiring engagement and reaching out by galvanising new directions for their curatorial policies, collections research and public education programming. As their first Treasures Display to include black content, this exhibition will show Douglass and his family's manuscripts and photographs alongside NLS items and will result in new resources for their webpages, education guides, exhibition tours and workshops designed for school teachers, lifelong learners and hard-to-reach groups.
3) The US companion exhibit at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site will benefit National Park Service curators, collections managers, site directors and rangers by introducing them to new research on Douglass and his family members' activism and on Douglass as a transatlantic reformer at the heart of UK antislavery movements. The exhibit will result in Lesson Plans, Suggested Reading, and Online Exhibit Resources for their Teaching Himself, Teaching America initiative for school teachers and children in Washington DC.
4) The US companion exhibit at the Banneker-Douglass Museum in historic Mt. Moriah AME Church will provide new research on Douglass and the problem of mapping black genealogies which will play a major role in updating the museum's permanent display and developing their public programming. As Maryland's official museum of African American heritage, this exhibit will benefit state government cultural policy-makers by influencing the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture's outreach efforts to communities, organizations, and local governments (Maryland State Archives; Harriet Tubman Visitor Center).
5) The Methodologies in UK/US Black Studies Research: Dialogues in Engaged Scholarship workshop at the Center for Black Studies Research will benefit grassroots campaigns for mainstreaming Black Studies curricula. This collaboration will result in the first international Transatlantic Black Studies Research Partnership between the Center for Black Studies Research and the University of Edinburgh.
6) This project will provide new audiences with access to research based knowledge in engaging formats by working with specialists to develop an Edinburgh Black History Trail Tour, US/UK Guided Exhibition Tours, Public Education Programmes and Exhibition and Learning Guides which will benefit a wide range of users including the project partners and their networks and groups; teachers and students; diverse communities.
7) Working with Historic Environment Environment Scotland to place a Commemorative Plaque on Douglass' residence as Scotland's anti-slavery agent will benefit their outreach programme by widening access to his key role in Scottish histories of slavery and freedom.

Description All the award objectives were met and the most significant achievements from the award are as follows:

1) As a result not only of undertaking the extensive additional archival research trips to the USA but of exhaustive reading and researching in primary and secondary materials here in the UK during this grant period, these activities for this award have led to new discoveries of additional primary works and secondary materials with the direct impact that my originally envisioned single monograph, Struggle for Liberty: Frederick Douglass' Family Letters, Essays, Speeches and Photographs has now been significantly extended to a 3 volume work consisting of 650,000 words in total. These 3 volumes are now titled: The Anna Murray and Frederick Douglass Family Papers: Volume 1: Biography (150,000 words); Volume 2: Private Writings (246,000 words): Volume 3 (248,000 words) Public Writings. While I have undertaken all the transcriptions and scholarly annotations of the 1000+ works during the period of this award - and which I unearthed as a result of in person and digital searching during the grant - and I have also finalised all the 900,000 words of vitally important notes that I have now taken in this previously undiscovered field and in support of the collective biography I am writing, I am still working on finishing the manuscript for Volume 1 and cross-checking the notations for accuracy across Volumes 2 and 3. These volumes will be submitted as a first priority in the next year and will be co-published with Edinburgh University Press and a US publisher (still to be confirmed). The research that I have undertaken as a result of this award for these volumes has led to major discoveries regarding the social justice activism of all the members of the Douglass family and which prior to this research had remained unknown and unacknowledged.

2) Also as a result of undertaking the extensive additional archival research trips to the USA and ongoing primary and secondary research conducted here in the UK, and which led to numerous new discoveries of additional works by Frederick Douglass during this grant period, I am still working on the manuscript of the Yale University Press biography of Douglass which is due for submission in the next 12 months.

3) With my Research Assistant on this project, I co-edited and submitted a journal special issue, Strike for Freedom: Acts and Arts of Liberation in the African Atlantic Imaginary (1818-2018) for Slavery and Abolition and for which I authored 5,000 words of the introduction and an 8,000 word article as well as co-editing all the contributors' essays (9 in total, 2 of which were our own). The special issue was published in February 2020 and it signals a major intervention into related multi and interdisciplinary fields.

4) With my Research Assistant I co-edited and submitted a journal special issue, A New Dawn of Freedom: Black Acts and Arts of Radicalism, Revolution, and Resistance (1818-2018) for which I authored 5,000 words of the introduction and a 6,000 word article as well as co-edited all the contributors' essays (16 in total, 2 of which were our own). This issue has been submitted in its entirety and is in production for publication with Kalfou, published by Temple University Press in the US, in Summer 2020, and it signals a major intervention into related multi and interdisciplinary fields.

5) I guest co-curated the exhibition Strike for Freedom at the National Library of Scotland which was a major intervention into their current curatorial practices by exhibiting the life and works of nineteenth century African American authors, activists, and revolutionaries for the first time.

6) I researched, wrote, and delivered Black History Walking Tours of the city of Edinburgh with one of my PhD students who undertook a vast amount of primary research for this project under my direction and with my collaborative input.

7) I researched, wrote and delivered 3 x interactive digital Scotland Black History Maps (with National Library of Scotland experts and one of my PhD students) which are all online and in regular international use, especially for researchers working in digital humanities and examining its relationship to African American Studies.

8) I researched and wrote an exhibition guide of 25,000 words which the Research Assistant on this project designed and which we have made freely available in the US and UK.

9) With National Library of Scotland experts, I researched, wrote and delivered a Scotland Curriculum Learning Resources Pack on African Atlantic Revolutionaries which is being hosted by the National Library of Scotland and is in the process of being launched later in 2020 as an online resource for teachers across History and English subject areas.

10) I was successful in my application to the Historic Environment Scotland to mount a plaque to Frederick Douglass's memory on 33 Gilmore Place and we held the dedication ceremony at which US and UK visitors attended and which was the basis for a documentary film with a film company for which I obtained additional funding from the University of Edinburgh.

11) I applied for and gained additional funding for a 15 minute documentary directed and produced by Urquhart Media titled Strike for Freedom and for which we obtained additional funding to tour it numerous locations in Scotland and I also toured it in the USA to various venues.

12) I was the Head Consultant for Isaac Julien's film on Douglass, Lessons of the Hour, which premiered in New York City in 2019. I've just submitted a 9000 word essay on the film for the catalogue due for publication next year.

13) I edited, researched and finalised the 10,000 word introduction and annotations in support of the first Oxford World's Classics edition of Douglass's My Bondage and My Freedom which was published in December 2019.

14) I acted as a guest curator for the Frederick Douglass Family Strike for freedom exhibition for which I designed and wrote the panels and on view at the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington DC in 2019.

15) I acted as a guest curator for the extended and multi panel Black History exhibition, also titled Strike for Freedom, for which I wrote and designed all the panels and which is now a permanent exhibition in the State House Taylor Building in Annapolis Maryland.

16) I researched, designed and developed a multi panel Frederick Douglass Family traveling exhibition titled New Dawn of Freedom which has so far been shown at the Multicultural Center Santa Barbara, California, the Public Library, Rochester New York, and the Humanities Building, York UK.

17) My research on the Douglass family was used in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC's Douglass family exhibition at which I gave a talk and held a public conversation with Dr Walter O. Evans (podcasts are all online).

18) I acted as a guest curator of Embers of Freedom the Douglass exhibition at SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah Georgia, on view in 2019 and 2020.

19) With the research assistant on this project, I co-ran the conference Black Atlantic Art and Authorship which brought together 35 early, mid, and senior career scholars, curators, archivists, artists and activists and which was jointly held at the National Library of Scotland and the University of Edinburgh and in which we held cross-disciplinary conversations across an array of different fields.

20) My co-authored (with Andrew Taylor) book on the Douglass family that was published in September 2018 and for which I researched and wrote the monograph on the family and completed the first transcriptions of the manuscript items was awarded the International African American History and Genealogical Society Maryland Book Award for best book in the Non-Fiction/Social Change Category.

21) The one-day workshop for academics and activists and artists on Methodologies in UK/US Black Studies Research: Dialogues in Engaged Scholarship was held at University of California Santa Barbara in April 2019.

22) As a result of the work for this award, this year I researched and designed and delivered the undergraduate courses titled Conquer or Die: African Americans Writing US History and African American and Black British Art at the University of Edinburgh and open to all students in English/ History/Art.

I am taking my findings forward from this award on multi-disciplinary practices and methodologies in researching African American family histories by taking up the role of Principal Investigator for my Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship titled, Sacrifice is Survival: Black Families Fighting for Freedom in the US and Canada. Here I'll be expanding my methodology for researching one family to examine 10 families.
Exploitation Route The outcomes of this funding are ideally taken forward and put to use by others by creating exhibitions, documentary films, books, and educational materials on the African American activists, authors, and artists examined in this research and investigated during this award in their own cities and towns across the US and UK and by writing exhibition guides, developing African American History walking tours and developing African American history digital maps sharing this content widely with all audiences from all backgrounds.

PI Contribution My research into Frederick Douglass and the Frederick Douglass family and into Slavery Studies and African American Studies - especially nineteenth century African American freedom fighters coming to the UK - led to this partnership with the National Library of Scotland. I acted as a co-curator with one of their expert specialist team members of the National Library of Scotland Treasures Display exhibition Strike for Freedom for which we showed the original priceless Frederick Douglass family manuscripts held in the Walter O. and Linda Evans Foundation and as made possible solely as a result of my partnership with this organisation - this was the first time this private collection had ever been shown anywhere in the world. As a result of my research and collaboration with the specialist at NLS we also selected items for display from the National Library of Scotland's collection related to nineteenth century African American activists and authors. I also led the research (with one of my PhD students) that formed the basis for the African American History Walking Tours of the City of Edinburgh that we delivered together to numerous groups and the 3 Digital maps (working with an expert at NLS) on African American Freedom Fighters and on Frederick Douglass that are still available online. I designed, led and delivered the public education programme as consisting of public lectures, exhibition tours, walking tours, workshops for different charities and public organisations. We produced a 25000 word exhibition guide which I authored) as well as 2 further guides (one a map and the other an exhibition introduction guide).
Collaborator Contribution The National Library of Scotland provided us with a curatorial expert who co-led the design and delivery of this exhibition and also the editing of the 2 guides - a map and an introduction guide -both of which were designed by an in-house expert. Their conservations team took the lead in preserving and safeguarding the priceless Frederick Douglass collection owned by the Walter O. and Linda Evans Foundation. Their Education team booked and organised the education programme which I delivered. Their map specialist was the leading consultant and digital creator of the digital maps that are available online. They hosted one day of the Black Atlantic Art and Authorship conference.Their web team are designing the Curriculum for teachers pack on African Atlantic Revolutionaries that I researched and authored and which is going online as a usable resource later in 2020.
Impact This collaboration is multi-disciplinary: Black Studies; Slavery Studies; African American Studies; Memory Studies; Civil War Studies; History; Literature; Visual Culture; Print Culture. 1) National Library of Scotland Treasures Display Exhibition, Strike for Freedom. 2) One printed map of Nineteenth Century African American Freedom fighters in Edinburgh. 3) One printed Exhibition Brochure providing key information. 4) One 80 page (25,000 words) detailed exhibition guide freely available to all. 5) Walking Tours of African American History for the City of Edinburgh. 6) 3 Digital Maps of African American History in Edinburgh. 7) A Conference, one day held at the NLS. 8) A public education programme.
