Bridging the Gaps: mixed reality performance of Chinese Opera in Shanghai's rural and urban heritage sites

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leeds
Department Name: Sch of Performance & Cultural Industries

Abstract

Bridging the Gaps will focus on new and innovative performances of Chinese Opera, a form of popular culture traditionally relating to rural communities, as a case study to establish new China-UK partnerships and projects. Xi Jinpings' Presidency has from 2014 placed increasing emphasis on balancing rural-urban social economic development and positioned traditional Chinese art forms, including Chinese Opera, as the anchor of China's creative and cultural industries. Yet disconnections between rural and urban communities and their respective creative practices and economies persist and have held these developments back.

Shanghai is separated into Pudong and Puxi: the former encompassing underdeveloped rural countryside; the latter occupying affluent financial quarters built by British, French, and other foreign Concessions. Shanghai has also been the focus of investments intended to overcome these rural-urban divisions; including the launch of a £100million traditional Chinese Opera Village in rural Pudong and the £2million redevelopment of an 1860 Anglican chapel heritage site into an immersive theatre in Puxi, on the Bund. Yet these attractions have struggled to attract visitors during their test openings.

This project will bring China and UK partners into collaboration to consider the potential of mixed reality performances of Chinese Opera to connect rural and urban audiences and these heritage sites with each other, while also appealing to new national and international audiences. Project investigators and participants will bring complementary expertise in UK and China creative industries, traditional and contemporary performance, and new technologies, together with a shared focus on site-specific, community-based and audience-centred innovative work.

Planned Impact

Rural-urban creative industries are targets of the latest strategic direction of the Chinese party-state. There is a substantial government investment in this area, exemplified by the Pudong Opera Village and Puxi Bund immersive theatre, with whom we anticipate the development, through this project, of a substantive bid or bids on mixed reality performance of Chinese Opera in rural and urban Shanghai. In this context, our China participants are aiming towards long-term collaboration with UK research-industry partners and have committed in principle to cash and/or in-kind contribution to future partnership activities, as evidenced in their Letters of Support. More broadly, our project activities address themes central to China's creative industries and prospective future state investment.

Beyond the life of the funded project, ongoing support for these collaborations will include: information on funding opportunities, advice on project development, and opportunities for project and bid review by project members through the dedicated WeChat group; opportunities for joint mentoring of prospective bids by the project PI and CIs in the UK and China; joint publication in English and Chinese journals reflecting and documenting the project that will serve also to cement and support evolving partnerships.

Description Traditional Chinese opera is a popular art form of over 360 styles predominantly relating to the rural communities. There are currently seven main opera forms in Shanghai: Hu opera, All-female Yue opera, Yu opera, Huai opera, Huangmei opera, Beijing opera and Kun opera. These opera forms have travelled with their migrant patrons from rural Pudong and other regions in China to urban Shanghai, where they settled, became absorbed and have since evolved within the cosmopolitan city. Despite distinctive artistic achievement, a historically rural background has meant that Chinese opera consistently carries low social and cultural capitals and struggles to attract a young urban audience. The gap is not only the physical distance between rural-urban spaces, but cultural identity consumption and construction associated with new millennium class restructuring.

Creative industries as a national policy was launched at the turn of the of 21st century in both the UK and China. Whilst de-industrialisation led to such new economic direction in the UK, China created compulsory redundancy of factory workers through central policy. The aim was to manually transform China's economy from 'Made in China' to 'Created in China'. Urban workers who had been the main audience and patrons of Chinese opera, lost their economic ability to support Chinese opera. The newly emerging middle class holds high knowledge capital, are fluent in bilingual and multilingual skills, creative but fixed on international cultural consumption and social capital accumulation. Chinese opera further fades into the background of urban alleyways and rural communities.

By 2016, China became the second largest economy in the world. Traditional Chinese culture, including Chinese opera, has been identified by the party-state as the anchor of the Chinese creative industry, for regional and national economic development and global soft power insertion. Urban opera houses begin to receive generous funding to cover not only annual expenditure but also to create new theatre spaces. Chinese opera has been fused fully with tourism for rural regional development, exemplified by the £100 million investment in building a traditional Chinese opera village in 2017 at Pudong Chuansha, the same village where the world's latest Disney Land was opened a year earlier. China's new leadership is trying to bridge the cultural and social class gaps regionally, nationally and internationally under the call of creative industries.

The AHRC research project "Bridging the Gaps" takes Chinese opera as the keyhole through which to examine the social economic and cultural gaps behind the cosmopolitan facade of Shanghai. It questions how political and social conditions effect the gaps artistically, socially and economically and explores possible means of bridging such gaps through building a UK-China creative industry collaborative cluster.
Exploitation Route Traditional Chinese art forms have repeatedly been emphasised by the Chinese party-state as the anchor of Chinese cultural and creative industries (CCI). Meanwhile, China faces the dual pressures from urban post-industrial transformation and more so, rural-urban development. In 2017, President XI Jinping stated that rural development is THE national strategy and in 2018, Cultural Bureaus throughout China changed their names to Cultural and Tourist Bureaus, focusing on developing rural CCI. Against this political background, our project is using Chinese opera as the UK CCI China market entry platform for two reasons:

1) Artistically, Chinese opera is a synthetic art form combining key Chinese traditional arts, including literature, music, dance, performance, costume, design and more. Presented through both 'live' and 'digital' formats such as; site specific performance, theatre, TV, film, radio and fast rising digital XR, it will generate a business model to provide SMEs with China market entry opportunities within nearly all 13 sectors of UK creative industries;
2) Socio-economically, distinctively different from the West, Chinese opera represents the urban working class and rural community way of life. Indeed, understanding the role of Chinese Opera within Chinese society has been key to our UK SMEs ability to nurture meaningful plans for appropriate product development.

With clear Chinese government policy direction and support, and the opportunity of working with a range of Chinese opera forms, our project will act as a test case of UK CCIs China market entry strategy, especially to support SMEs to develop a sustainable business model that is potentially transferable to all of the 13 UK CCI sectors: Advertising, Architecture, Art and antiques market, Crafts, Design, Fashion, Film and video, Music, Performing arts, Publishing, Software, Television and radio, Video and computer games.

Description impact will be delivered through the project's catalysing of collaborations between the external partners, and potentially other participants, to develop and establish a creative industry chain, in which public and private sectors work reciprocally to identify new consumers and markets. Such a creative industry chain applies within UK partners, Chinese partners as well as across UK-China partners. As specified in the CFS, there is currently very little interaction between the three China partners themselves: Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, Shanghai Yue Opera House and Chuansha Opera Village. There has been little previous opportunity to bring them together to examine rural-urban locations, and traditional-modern artistic identities. Amongst the UK partners, Leeds Playhouse, Invisible Flock and Human VR are northern-region art institutions and SMEs (Leeds and Sheffield). There has previously been no full collaboration, and none have worked in China or with the Chinese at any depth. This project provides a rare and excellent opportunity for them to enter the Chinese market as a cluster, with complementary areas of expertise, to provide each other with international socio-cultural and linguistic support through shared resource, whilst developing partnerships in Shanghai as a UK cluster to cultivate opportunities in China and establish a long-term 'creative chain'.

Policy Influence Type Influenced training of practitioners or researchers
Impact I had been building AHRC Bridging Gaps into a new transnational MA Global Creative Industries 1+1+1 development at East China University of Political Science and Law, which is a core partner of this research project in Shanghai. It forms an integral part of the module, along with theories and research training. Students are expected to work in groups as well as independently to record relevant aspects of the field trip (either digitally or in diary form) and produce a 20min group presentation (about 4-5 in one group, depend on the size of the class). Independently, student is expected to compile a literature review, identify appropriate research methods and producing a critical report. The result was very complementary: 1. research data has been fully recorded, collated, which otherwise would not be possible; 2. the process changed students understanding of research methods and outcome in the field of cultural and creative industries; 3. Transnational MA Global Creative Industries 1+1+1 between the two institutions with a particular research/teaching focus on creative industries is to be officially signed as a result of this research collaboration.
