Promoting language policy

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Modern & Medieval Languages

Abstract

This research aims to strengthen the case for placing languages and the funding of language education higher up the political agenda by providing evidence for the economic value of languages to the United Kingdom. Whilst there are many excellent reports on the value of languages to key issues of our time, such as social cohesion, health and well-being and diplomacy and soft power, the economic case has not yet been made robustly enough. Building on the research from the AHRC funded programme, Multilingualism: Empowering Individuals, Transforming Societies and in partnership with RAND Europe, the project will model both bilateral trade flows and the effect of languages and the current and future economic effects of languages. In addition, an online archive of language policy documents will be created to serve as a resource for future research on language policy.
