Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution This 4-year partnership, funded through BBSRC, between the University of Reading and Yeungnam University on industrial biotechnology and food waste valorisation provides a unique opportunity to UK and South Korea scientists to work collaboratively and complement their technical skills and experiences working in a complex research area of significant importance for society, environment, and the economy. The 4-year programme will entail several bi-lateral research visits between UK and South Korean researchers, from early career researchers to senior academics. It aims to provide a platform for collaboration, training and idea generation, leading to larger research programmes. The University of Reading group brings expertise in microbial fermentation and food waste valorisation.
Collaborator Contribution The Yeungnam University brings expertise on applied enzymology. The University hosted in 2023 a PhD researchers for 1-month, who caried out a number of experiments using South Korean seaweed material.
Impact Through the partnership a 1-month research visit from the University of Reading to Yeungnam University was organised for a PhD study to to new techniques/knowledge on seaweed processing, focusing on the enzymatic hydrolysis of various types of seaweeds.
