Description The research has identified evolutionary mechanisms associated with trade-offs between epidemiological and traits for two major plant pathogens, a rust Puccinia triticina and a soil borne fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis, using a combination of mathematical models and rigorous experimentation. The methods allow analysis of the likely evolutionary changes both past and future that may be expected to arise in these pathogens in relation to agronomic selection pressures. The research also identifies the factors that need to be considered in selecting plants for resistance to plant pathogens in such a manner as to minimise risks of failure. We have subsequently extended this to propose mechanisms to promote durable resistance to disease in plants.
