Description This grant was awarded to fund a workshop between key research groups in the UK and India. The aim of the proposed workshop was to bring together a wide range of experts from each country to discuss in detail the topic "Biomass composition, deconstruction and enzyme discovery" and exchange details of research expertise and capacity in these areas.The Workshop focused on the following aspects of biomass deconstruction:-
Lignocellulosic feedstocks - chemical composition and cell wall organisation, Effects of pre-treatment on biomass structure and composition, Hydrolytic enzymes for biomass deconstruction. The workshop attracted 22 delegates from two Indian and 7 UK institutions. It was run over 2 days and consisted of a series of 9 presentations (one from each participating organisation) the served to outline the interests and capabilities of the institute. These were followed by consortia building activities during which the outlines of two major research projects were prepared. Following on from the workshop these two projects were submitted to a joint BBSRC/DBT call for proposals in bioenergy and one of the projects subsequently received funding.
Exploitation Route The workshop was instrumental in the preparation of a successful grant application between key UK and Indian research groups into the production of biofuels from agricultural residues and other renewable feed stocks. This started in 2013 and will progress research in this area.
