Description This grant is intended to fund the development of connections between The University of Glasgow, the Pirbright Institute and other collaborators, and researchers in India on foot-and-mouth disease. It has already achieved its aims in that we have now received funding from BBSRC and the Indian Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to work on foot-and-mouth disease in India on a grant that started in Nov 2014. We have visited three research groups in India on two trips: two government research institutes, one in Northern India, which whom we now have a grant award led by the Pirbright Institute, one in Chennai which we have visited and who have returned to visit us in Glasgow, and one Tamil Nadu state university, that we also visited. We discovered the the prospects for funding are much better at the national than regional level in India, and so further work with the latter is unlikely.
Exploitation Route This partnering work will continue, but the real outcomes will come from the now funded BBSRC / DBT grant.

PI Contribution Expertise in the modelling of transmission and antigenicity of a variety of diseases, especially foot-and-mouth disease and rabies. We sent out a party of four staff to India to discuss our overlapping research interests and investigate projects that we could develop together. We also hosted two professors who made a return visit to Glasgow.
Collaborator Contribution Expertise in applied mathematics and mathematical modelling. They hosted us in Chennai for a research day where we discussed common research interests and sent a party of two staff to visit Glasgow to further investigate potential links.
Impact We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Chennai, India, which will promote interdisciplinary research between the two organisations. We have had two one day meetings, one in Chennai as part of a visit to research institutes in India, and one in Glasgow as part of a visit by their researchers to universities in the UK. We are currently investigating funding sources for potential grants.

Collaborator Contribution PDFMD are the lead organisation for foot-and-mouth disease control in India, and contributed expertise in the disease in India.
Impact A successful interdisciplinary grant has now been funded based on this collaboration. This involves vets, microbiologists, epidemiologists and mathematicians.

PI Contribution We contributed expertise in the epidemiology of a variety of diseases, especially foot-and-mouth disease and rabies, and expertise in mathematical modelling. We sent out a party of four staff to India to discuss our overlapping research interests and investigate projects that we could develop together. We also offered the possibility of training for staff from TANUVAS in the UK for capacity building.
Collaborator Contribution TANUVAS partners contributed expertise on veterinary medicine, and especially on the field situation in the country. They also provided good connections with the policymakers in country who will ultimately control our ability to control disease, and facilitated meetings with them.
Impact We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to investigate international funding sources to work together and to develop projects together further. We also have a clear understanding of the funding situation in Tamil Nadu, which is significantly less positive than was originally described when we originated the partnering award. Any work arising from this will be multi-disciplinary, involving expertise in epidemiology and mathematical modelling in Glasgow and veterinary medicine, field surveillance and laboratory work in India.

Results and Impact The sixteen conferences, workshops and symposia we have organised in Glasgow have resulted in lengthy discussions about the strategic direction that research should move in to have more impact, especially on policy.

Several consortia for large grants have met at these meetings over the years, and they have resulted in closer communications with both our collaborators in academia and partners in NGOs, charities and amongst policy makers.
