Industrial Impact.
Industry has a critical requirement for data sources, data integration, visualization and analysis tools, and for training related to these, across the broad spectrum of data types relevant to life sciences. The ELIXIR WP3 industry report refers to: protein and nucleotide sequencing; genomic information; genetic variation; small molecules; proteomics; transcriptomics; macromolecular structures; scientific literature analysis; ontologies or controlled vocabularies; and pathway and interaction information. In the pharmaceutical, consumer goods, consumer markets and agri-food sectors small molecule data, protein sequence and structure, as well as pathways are of critical importance. Genomic data, genomic variation, and links to phenotypes are important in plant and animal breeding. Food security can only be supported by scientifically driven research and by making the fruits of this research available to academic, governmental and industrial scientists.

Scientists in large companies, medium and small size organizations can be overwhelmed by the complexity and volume of data. Repetition of in house custom solutions is not cost effective so a new landscape of pre-competitive collaborations is emerging. Training in understanding ranges of data types, interactions and agile integration are prerequisites for efficient industrial research. Tools such as semantic web data integration techniques, controlled vocabulary / ontology definition and metadata capture are key for modern data driven biological research but adoption of these techniques in industry will require education and training.

ELIXIR-UK will engage with industry in a number of ways:
- through industry organisations such as EFPIA, Pistoia (Pharma), and BioNOW (BioTech SMEs), systematically developing those links to inform its training content and training methods;
- awareness raising in industry of ELIXIR tools and resources, and providing training in them;
- packaging platform distributions such as BioLinux in other informatics sectors, such as cheminformatics;
- using industry for provisioning training and hosting training events;
- brokering access to high-end training needs in ICT literacy (e.g. HPC).

Societal impact:
Manchester specifically focuses on: the development of the Training e-Support Service; the adaptation and rollout of Software Carpentry (www.software-carpentry.org, "Helping scientists build better software since 1998") across UK and European Life Science; and in the oversight of the technical infrastructure aspects of ELIXIR-UK.

As ELIXIR is an *infrastructure* programme the impact of the work proposed - to ensure better e-infrastructure - is significant:
- on the quality, robustness, reliability, sustainability and fidelity of software and software services contributing to the infrastructure;
- on the ability of the bioinformatics and developer community to adopt and adapt ELIXIR infrastructure and software from elsewhere;

The importance of better and more reproducible and reusable software has been recognised in the Life Sciences in recent years (e.g. Nature 467, 775-777 (2010), Computational science: ...Error ...why scientific programming does not compute). ELIXIR-UK is an opportunity to affect change and affect new and better practice.

Description In this award ELIXIR-UK, established itself as a node of the ELIXIR community.
It established a UK and European lead in coordinating a training programme across ELIXIR and across the UK.

It has:
- established training needs through workshops
- established a programme of Software and Data Carpentry workshops in the UK and across the ELIXIR EU Nodes
- co-founded a Data Carpentry international initiative
- participated in ELIXIR activities, notably standards, interoperability and software registry
- participated in international standards activities in the Research Data Alliance
- participated in national level co-work with the NIH BD2K Commons Program, notably the BioCADDIE WGs on data discovery, identifiers, metadata profiles and training.
- co-established a statistics training activity with ABPI/SIP/Cogent leading to the piloting of http://www.statschoices.org.uk/ and workshops with Cambridge
- developed the TeSS Training Portal for ELIXIR's training materials.
- lead the Bioschemas flagship for marking up datasets and web based resources, including training, for harvesting and indexing.
- 2/3 ELIXIR portals are from the UK Node: TeSS (training portal) and FAIRsharing (standards registry).
- 28 ELIXIR-UK Services have Service Delivery Plans for ELIXIR. - CATH database elected as an ELIXIR Core Data Resource.
- Earlham Institute established as ELIXIR-UK legal entity.
- 19 Universities and Research Institutes signed a Collaboration Agreement.
- ELIXIR-UK established the best practice for selecting Node Resources.

ELIXIR-UK co-led the ELIXIR Training Platform (2015-2020 ) and ELIXIR-EXCELERATE WP on interoperability (2015-2021).
ELIXIR-UK is a leading participant in an extensive number of follow-on EU ELIXIR projects including: ELIXIR-EXCELERATE, IMI FAIRplus, ELIXIR-CONVERGE, EJP-RD, and EOSC-Life. ELIXIR-UK also participates in EOSC projects ESOC-Enhance and EOSC-Pilot

ELIXIR-UK continues to play a major role in ELIXIR. ELIXIR-UK was explicitly cited in the UKRI UK's Research and Innovation Infrastructure Roadmap "Significant expansion of the UK node of ELIXIR to support BioFAIR, a data sustainability institute supporting the coordination and development of UK life science data"
Exploitation Route The TeSS online training platform, curriculums, training materials, training programme and training methodologies have been taken forward through the ELIXIR programme and used by Life Scientists throughout Europe. The TeSS continues to be the flagship training resource for ELIXIR through funding provided by the ELIXIR Commissioned Service program and follow-on EU projects.

28 ELIXIR-UK Node data, training, tools and interoperability services have Service Delivery Plans to contribute to ELIXIR's service portfolio. 2/3 ELIXIR portals are from the UK Node: TeSS (training portal) and FAIRsharing (standards registry).

ELIXIR-UK established the best practice for selecting Node Resources. Three resources (InterMine, ISATools and FAIRsharing) are recognised as Recommended Interoperabiity Resources. ELIXIR-UK is taking a greater role in the Tools platform through its work in workflow portability and registries, and leads the Bioschemas initiative for universal markup of web-based bio resources. ELIXIR-UK members are partners in several ELIXIR EU projects (EOSC Life, IMI FAIRPlus, ELIXIR-Converge) and participated in EOSCPilot and EOSC Enhance through ELIXIR. We participate in 7 ELIXIR Communities and lead 2, several Focus Groups and in 21 ELIXIR Implementation studies.
ELIXIR-UK leads the Bioschemas.org initiative to markup life science web resources with machine processable metadata.

Notably the UK is recognised as leading the training activities of ELIXIR through the TeSS portal and its work on training metrics and the Carpentries.

Description ELIXIR UK, a part of the ELIXIR community, is taking a UK and European lead in training. ELIXIR UK's aim, to facilitate access to training in UK and across Europe for scientists in both academia and industry, will allow researchers to combine their experimental expertise with available computational infrastructure to address critical research questions. Only then will biological Big Data be transformed efficiently into meaningful results that lead to new discoveries and innovations. To achieve this, ELIXIR UK is identifying training needs across the UK and European life sciences sector, and fill these training gaps by developing a new training strategy together with scientists, specialised centres and key organisations. ELIXIR UK will also support international collaborations to bring together scientists from academia, industry and other organisations from all over Europe - together filling skills gaps, strengthening science across Europe, and setting the agenda for training needs in the future. ELIXIR-UK now co-leads the ELIXIR Training Platform (all 21 nodes participate) and co-runs the ELIXIR-EXCELERATE WP on training. ELIXIR-UK has established the TeSS Training Portal for ELIXIR and rolled out a programme of Software and Data Carpentry training across the ELIXIR nodes and in the UK in partnership with the UK's Software Sustainability Institute. Released a website to act as a focus for developing training activity in statistics. (www.statschoices.org.uk), which contains a growing set of resources and information about the wider Statistics Training Signposting project. During the lifetime of the project ELIXIR-UK expanded its remit beyond training to include Data Resources, Interoperability Services, Tools as well as Training. 15 UK organisations signed to the ELIXIR-UK Consortium Agreement and members are beginning to win "implementation study" awards from ELIXIR. 15 services have Service Delivery Plans for services for ELIXIR and 2/3 ELIXIR Portals are UK services (TeSS and FAIRsharing). In 2017 CATH/Gene3D won recognition as Core Data Resource status from the ELIXIR Data Platform and in 2018 InterMine, ISATools and FAIRsharing won Recommended Interoperability Resource status. The UK Node also leads work on Bioschemas (bioschemas.org) - a flagship project of ELIXIR to markup in a lightweight way datasets, tools, training that are on the web using the schema.org commercial "standard"; hence enabling indexing by other registries and index engines. The ELIXIR UK Node also makes major contributions to the Tools Platform of ELIXIR through its work on workflow interoperability (Common Workflow Language), containerisation and workflow registries. The Node leads work on a workflow collaboratory for life science projects on the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC Life) and in 2020 launched the WorkflowHub 6 months early to support the sharing of COVID-19 processing pipelines. The registry is part of the EU COVID Data Portal https://www.covid19dataportal.org and was highlighted as the prime success by the review panel of EOSC-Life. This work is co-lead by myself and Frederik Coppens (ELIXIR-BE) leading a team of 49 participants from 10 countries. The node has a leadership role in FAIR principles, with several Node members as authors of the seminal Nature article on FAIR Principles for Scientific Data (Scientific Data volume 3, Article number: 160018 (2016) over 1000 citations) - which has influenced national, European and International data sharing and open science policy. Partnered with Software Sustainability Institute and BBSRC to develop guidance or software outputs in funding awards, and ran a national workshop on licensing In 2021 ELIXIR-UK won a UKRI Innovation Fellowship award to develop training for Reseach Data Management for Life Scientists in the uk and develop an network of RDM stewards. ELIXIR-UK also co-lead the RDMKIt, and web-based toolkit for Life Scientists and data stewards developed under the CONVERGE project. The RDMKit will be launched in March 31 2021 just 8 months after its inception, and is already incorporated into the European Commission's Horizon Europe data management planning recommendations. ELIXIR-UK is working with MRC, BBSRC and Wellcome to establish BioFAIR - a national institute for Life Science data and software stewardship. Currently undertaking a feasibility study and won a UKRI Innovation Fellowship award to seed the preparation for a UKRI SPF bid ELIXIR-UK also co-leads the ELIXIR Interoperability Platform, which, although is outwith the core remit of this award.

Description Started in 2003 and first released in 2007, the ISA tools have been developed over time by the Oxford team and collaborators or directly contributed by partnering contributors, via the ISA Commons collaborative community. Short description of the developments and achievements of the resource over the last year: • Awarded Wellcome Trust funds (2018-2021), as collaborative project with the University of Cambridge's InterMine team to link the two resources and reward researchers for annotating and publish FAIR data; also, ISA is embedded in two ELIXIR Implementation Studies, on a Plant-focused data validation and on metabolomics. • With the uptake of ISA-Galaxy tools (https://github.com/ISA-tools/isatools-galaxy) and integration with the Galaxy Framework, ISA has struck a major milestone by showcasing how prospective data management can be done, demonstrating a full deposition workflow to Metabolights and creating training material (10.7490/f1000research.1115757.1). • Jupyter notebooks (https://github.com/ISA-tools/dtp-isa-exercises) have been developed as teaching material to showcase the use of ISA-API in various context to undergraduate and postgraduate courses on data readiness.

Title Continued improvements to the ISA toolkit and the new Datascriptor component

Leveraging our experience and links with the communities, we are designing an open-source web-based tool - part of an ecosystem of existing annotation and authoring systems - to help researchers to use community standards to describe their (meta)data at the source, and capitalize on their effort to accelerate the creation of a data article. In addition major advances have been made to the ISA API also working with the ELIXIR Plant and Metabolomics communities.

Title FAIRassist, the FAIRsharing educational component 
Description FAIRassist is the new educational component of the well established FAIRsharing resource, and aims to help users to discover resources to measure and improve FAIRness. FAIRassist implements a phased rollout of its content, working with and for the community. The initial step is to list and describe existing resources for the assessment and/or evaluation of digital objects against the FAIR principles, which are aspirational. The focus is on manual questionnaires, checklists and automated tests that help users understand how to achieve a state of "FAIRness", and how this can be measured and improved.

Over 123 countries viewed the RDMkit, the top viewer is the USA. Contributors to the RDMkit include the EC BioExcel centre of excellence, the ESFRIs INSTRUCT and EuroBioImaging and the EC project EJP-RD. the RDMkit has been invited to be presented at several NIH Office of Open Data Strategy meetings, inclusing a webinar 11 March 2022 with over 145 attendees. The RDMkit was identified by the Open Science Unit of the European Commission as a key resource for Horizon Europe and is recommended by their literature. Also positively received by Open Science Unit BEIS and Wellcome Trust, as well as many national fundign agencies including Germany and Norway. the platform and methodology has been adopted by the EC BY-COVID project.

Title RO-Crate 
Description RO-Crate is a community effort to establish a lightweight approach to packaging research data with their metadata. It is based on schema.org annotations in JSON-LD, and aims to make best-practice in formal metadata description accessible and practical for use in a wider variety of situations, from an individual researcher working with a folder of data, to large data-intensive computational research environments. RO-Crate is the marriage of Research Objects with DataCrate. It aims to build on their respective strengths, but also to draw on lessons learned from those projects and similar research data packaging efforts. The RO-Crate effort brings together practitioners from very different backgrounds, and with different motivations and use-cases. Among our core target users are: a) researchers engaged with computation and data-intensive, workflow-driven analysis; b) digital repository managers and infrastructure providers; c) individual researchers looking for a straight-forward tool or how-to guide to "FAIRify" their data; d) data stewards supporting research projects in creating and curating datasets.

Title terms4FAIRskills, a terminology for FAIR stewardship skills 
Description The terms4FAIRskills project aims to create a formalised terminology that describes the competencies, skills and knowledge associated with making and keeping data FAIR. When mature, this terminology will apply to a variety of use cases, including: - To assist with the creation and assessment of stewardship curricula; - To facilitate the annotation, discovery and evaluation of FAIR-enabling materials (e.g. training) and resources; - To enable the formalisation of job descriptions and CVs with recognised, structured competencies. The completed terminology will be of use to trainers who teach FAIR data skills, researchers who wish to identify skill gaps in their teams and managers who need to recruit individuals to relevant roles.

ELIXIR-UK have made contributions to all aspects of the Bioschemas Community.
Collaborator Contribution The Bioschemas Community brings together life sciences data and resource providers to identify a common and minimal set of Schema.org terms for describing a particular type of resource. The community have published 12 specifications for different resource types.
Impact Bioschemas have published 12 technical specifications for describing life science resources, presented posters at 3 international conferences in computer science and life science domains, and given tutorials on the work.

PI Contribution Under the auspices of RDA Europe and EOSC Future, FAIRsharing has now officially launched our new Community Curation Programme: https://fairsharing.org/community_champions. This Programme creates a collaborative environment where domain experts are selected to oversee certain areas within the FAIRsharing registry in return for a number of professional benefits. The domain and discipline experts of the FAIRsharing Community Champions Programme: 1 . act as advocates to promote the value of standards, databases and policies for digital objects (incl. data, software). 2 . create educational material escribing these resources helping researchers and other stakeholders to find, use and adopt them. 3 . enrich the content of FAIRsharing, adding and enhancing the description and discoverability of these resources. The FAIRsharing Community Champions put their expertise into action in one of more disciplines or area of activities, according to their interest, and are credited for their contribution via visible attribution in their ORCID and FAIRsharing profiles. Their contribution to and engagement with the FAIRsharing team gives them more knowledge about the wealth of standards (terminologies, models/formats, guidelines, identifier schema), databases (repositories and knowledge bases) and policies (by institutions, funders, journals and other stakeholders) relevant to them.

Impact As a result of this collaboration, all checklist fields and RDA-endorsed policy features within the scope of FAIRsharing are available within FAIRsharing policy records. This creates a FAIR data policy "workflow" from a) FAIR Data Policy Checklist to b) deposition of the policy and assignment of a DOI, through to c) submission of that policy into FAIRsharing. This process helps create FAIR-aligned data policies, as FAIR metadata will be accessible to both humans (through policy publication and the creation of the FAIRsharing record) and machines (through the FAIRsharing API). The result will be data policies that are more findable, accessible and re-usable.

PI Contribution The Data Stewardship Wizard (DSW) is a tool for data management planning. Prof. Sansone's group runs FAIRsharing, a community-recognized curated, informative and educational resource that interlinks community standards to databases, repositories and data policies (by funders and policies). We have worked with the DSW team to surface the right level of information from FAIRsharing to the DSW users, via the respective tools' APIs.
Collaborator Contribution The DSW has accessed relevant FAIRsharing content and displaied for selection to the users, when they define a data management plan.
Impact The questioning in the Data Stewardship Wizard is modelled after the conversation a researcher could have with a data management expert; most questions are closed questions with a limited set of possible answers. PI Contribution The Center for Open Science (COS, cos.io) is a non-profit technology company with a mission to increase the openness, integrity, and reproducibility of research. It works to achieve this mission through meta-scientific research to quantify the barriers to reproducibility, advocacy and outreach to stakeholder organizations to remove those barriers, summarized in the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) guidelines (cos.io/top), and builds infrastructure to enable these solutions (osf.io). Based in Pro. Sansone group in Oxford, FAIRsharing (fairsharing.org) is a curated, informative and educational resource on data and metadata standards, inter-related to repositories and data policies. FAIRsharing guides consumers to discover, select and use these resources with confidence, and producers to make their resources more findable, more widely adopted and cited. In this context, the organizations are carrying out a joint project to increase the number and the clarity of journal and research funder policies that effectively incentivize data sharing, among other goals. The TOP Guidelines consist of eight specific standards that funder and publishers of scientific research can use to implement better research practices. The FAIRsharing registry exists to bring clarity and discoverability to existing data policies. By working together these two organizations will classify the recommendations these policies contain, to improve their definition, comparability and ultimately clarity of guidance to the users (authors and awardees). Initially, an exemplar set of policies, already in FAIRsharing, has been commonly curated and their compliance to the TOP Data Transparency standard assessed; a mechanism will be developed to display the level of compliance in FAIRsharing. Progressively, the work will expand to cover more policies; additional sorting and discovery features will be added to help users to find and compare policies.
Collaborator Contribution COS team has developed the TOP standard and calculated the score of these policies.

PI Contribution We have helped many users, service providers and other developers to implement one or more components of the ISA software suite at their site to fit their data needs.
Collaborator Contribution They have helped us to refine the ISA software suite, filling gaps and tuning it for certain data types.
Impact The ISA Commons is a growing ecosystem of institute-based (e.g. USA NASA GeneLab Data Repository) and global repositories (e.g. EMBL-EBI MetaboLights), as well as data-driven journals (e.g. Springer Nature Scientific Data) that use the ISA formats, and/or are powered by one or more component of the ISA software suite. But also grass-root standards groups that leverage on the ISA data model and formats. The sustainability and maintenance of the ISA data model, formats, and tools, is guided by the ISA Working Group.

Description The Bioschemas Community have developed 12 profiles of the Schema.org vocabulary to provide a standardised approach to marking up life sciences resources. The 12 profiles cover marking up for web resources representing Beacons, Data Catalogues (repositories), Data Records, Data Sets, Events (such as training workshops), Lab Protocols, Proteins, Protein Annotations, Protein Structures, Samples, Software Tools, Training Materials. The ELIXIR-UK community have contributed to all of these profiles, and the proposals for 3 new Schema.org types that some of them are based on (BioChemEntity, DataRecord, LabProtocol).

Title Datascriptor 
Description From structured dataset to data article. Leveraging our experience and links with the communities, we are now designing an open-source web-based tool - part of an ecosystem of existing annotation and authoring systems - to help researchers to use community standards to describe their (meta)data at the source, and capitalize on their effort to accelerate the creation of a data article. The user will be guided to provide (semi)structured descriptions of the experimental design, and of the post-processed data, to generate, respectively, the Methods and a set of statements to populate the Results section of a manuscript. Datascriptor will work: (i) as a stand-alone tool - for anyone to use - implementing generic metadata models, such as W3C Data Catalog vocabulary; and (ii) as a component of the ISA Tools - for its user communities - implementing the ISA metadata model. To output short sentences from the (semi)structured input, we will evaluate a mixed data-to-text approach using template-based and neural-based (i.e. machine learning) methods. To further enrich the content of the manuscript, Datascriptor will connect to existing authoring systems, including Substance, Texture, Stenci.la and Manuscripts, and export the result in JATS format. Our plans also include an export as a DAR file and in LaTeX format.

Contributors to the RDMkit include the EC BioExcel centre of excellence, the ESFRIs INSTRUCT and EuroBioImaging and the EC project EJP-RD. the RDMkit has been invited to be presented at several NIH Office of Open Data Strategy meetings, inclusing a webinar 11 March 2022 with over 145 attendees. The RDMkit was identified by the Open Science Unit of the European Commission as a key resource for Horizon Europe and is recommended by their literature. Also positively received by Open Science Unit BEIS and Wellcome Trust, as well as many national fundign agencies including Germany and Norway. the platform and methodology has been adopted by the EC BY-COVID project.

Description One of the goals of ELIXIR (Europe's distributed infrastructure for life-science data) is to train research scientists to better use available computational infrastructures to address critical research questions. This requires access both to face-to-face training opportunities and to disparate training materials and resources, currently dispersed across Europe. TeSS is ELIXIR's training platform, providing a one-stop shop for trainers and trainees, to find online training content such as training materials, events, and interactive tutorials. Results and Impact The Turing Way is an online handbook - and global community - dedicated to fostering gold-standard reproducible research. It's a cultural movement with the potential to transform data science. A book dash is a one day collaborative event where selected contributors are invited to work with others to add to and improve the Turing Way book. I wrote a section on FAIR and FAIRsharing and my experience in research data management. My contribution is also featured in ATI's Impact Story on "Changing the culture of data science".

Results and Impact ELIXIR presented at U.S. BD2K All-Hands Grantee Meeting
BD2K is an initiative of the U.S. National Institute of Health to establish a digital ecosystem for biomedical research. The All Hands Grantee Meeting held on 12-13 November 2015 in Bethesda, Maryland, brought together all participants and grantees in BD2K. Carole Goble (ELIXIR UK Node) attended as an ELIXIR representative. Also attending from ELIXIR were Janet Thornton, Susanna Sansone and Henning Hermjakob. Susanna and Henning are investigators on BD2K awards.

Around 350-400 people attended the meeting over the two days. The range of grantees is impressive - a number of early career and established cyber-infrastructure and computing specialists as well as the expected biomedical investigators and computational biomedicine researchers.

BD2K is a $100 million per annum coordinated programme of work, and the range and ambition is impressive. The progress is visible already after the first year, and there was a positive vibe of a real opportunity for change. The two days was an agenda of plenary talks, posters, demos, breakout sessions, and programme meetings, including a plenary ELIXIR presentation by Janet and Carole, which was very well received and raised awareness of ELIXIR work among the US bioinformatics community.

Results and Impact The Community Workshop kicked-off a new initiative to create a system for sharing information about events, traninig materials, people and organisations across all domains of life sciences.

This system will be based on a common format for describing life science events, training materials, organisation and people, using schema.org, an initiative to promote and maintain schemas for structured data on the internet.

The project is a collaboration between ELIXIR, Pistoia Alliance, GOBLET and BioSharing, and is open to anyone interested.

Results and Impact ELIXIR explicitly supports the FAIR Principles - Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable - for its data, software, tools, events and training resources. "Finding" has the significant challenge of effective discovery and indexing of web-based resources across all ELIXIR information providers - this is an issue because there has been no agreement within ELIXIR about how to expose such resources in order to make them discoverable. One solution to this problem is to adopt Schema.org mark-up. Schema.org is a community initiative supported by four major search-engine providers: Google, Bing, Yahoo and Yandex. It provides a simple way to publish data in a standard format. If websites publishing life-science training materials, data, tools, profiles etc. were to use Schema.org mark-up, then their websites could be crawled, and the data could be indexed and exposed in searchable portals. However, this approach has challenges. Bioschemas is a newly formed community group in the life sciences to address these challenges, aiming to make the adoption of Schema.org part of a powerful way to discover and collect life-science information. It produces specifications, one for each information type ('Training Course', 'Event', 'Sample Data', 'Ontology Term', 'Tool', etc.). Each specification lists the Schema.org minimum properties expected, and the constraints for each property: for example, the 'Events' specification that the property 'topic' should be an EDAM ontology topic. The specifications are developed openly and are available on GitHub, with the support of existing communities of domain experts. Bioschemas also identifies the types or properties that are needed in the life sciences but not present in Schema.org, and works with the community to encourage the adoption of these types and properties into Schema.org.

Results and Impact For any discipline, identifying high quality training materials is difficult. They are often spread across different institutional websites, personal blogs, or stored in archives. This means you have to know exactly what you are looking for, and where to find it. However, for many, training occurs when the person knows little about the subject they wish to train in. This makes it difficult to know what material they need to look for. Once it is identified, it is also difficult to know what quality others within the community rate that material. To solve this problem for European Bioinformatics, we have generated the TeSS Portal. TeSS aggregates links to disparate training materials and events scattered around the institutional websites of ELIXIR Nodes and other content providers (GOBLET, Software and Data Carpentry, EBI TrainOnline, Genome3D, on-course, and more.), making them centrally discoverable and searchable. Training resources within TeSS can be collected and arranged into packages and/or training workflows, forming graphical representations of scientific pipelines in order to organise resources into easily navigable views. Aggregation of training content happens automatically through a set of custom-made nightly-run scraper scripts. Scrapers use a number of techniques to extract information: HTML-scraping and APIs had been the predominant methods, but are either temperamental or scarcely found respectively. More recently we have focused on parsing structured schema.org mark-up data. The TeSS team, through the Bioschemas group, have been heavily involved in developing schema.org specifications for Life science training resources and promoting their adoption

The course is an ELIXIR-EXCELERATE course organized by ELIXIR-CH and ELIXIR-IT.

ELIXIR-EXCELERATE Train-the-Trainer courses are addressed to both scientists with some experience in training and scientists with little or no previous experience, who believe teaching is a relevant aspect of their professional development and is or may become important in their career.

The first there was a demonstration of how to use FAIRsharing, and how curation of standards and databases is donel. The second day focussed on how to develop standards when there are no community-endorsed standards available and also how to contribute a standard to FAIRsharing.

Results and Impact The C19 Rapid Review Initiative is a large-scale collaboration of organisations across the scholarly publishing industry and organizations (eLife, F1000 Research, Hindawi, PeerJ, PLOS, Royal Society, FAIRsharing, Outbreak Science Rapid PREreview, GigaScience, Life Science Alliance, Ubiquity Press, UCL, MIT Press, Cambridge University Press, BMC, RoRi, AfricArXiv, Oxford University Press, and Gates Open Research) that has agreed to mandate data deposition across the journals part of the initiative. The press release announce that data available on request will not be acceptable, except for legal or ethical reasons (publishers have specific policies regarding exceptions, and how they may be able to be managed in other ways).
For transparency and visibility, COVID Rapid Review Initiative members will register their data policy in FAIRsharing, which interlinks repositories to standards for identifying and reporting data and metadata; these data policies will be grouped and visible under a dedicated FAIRsharing Collection. The use of repositories and community standards are at the core of FAIR, the globally adopted Principles advocating datasets and other research outputs are findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.

TeSS (life sciences training portal, https://tess.elixir-uk.org) aggregates links to disparate training events and materials, scattered across ELIXIR Nodes and other training portals, and makes them centrally discoverable.

Aggregation is effected automatically, via custom-built scripts that scrape training metadata descriptors (title, description, prerequisites, goals, categories, keywords, contributors, audience, etc.) from participating websites. This task is made difficult by the lack of consistency in training pages' structures and lack of agreement on training metadata descriptors.

In the past year, we helped initiate the BioSchemas Working Group, which aims to reach consensus among life-science communities in defining metadata standards for describing training resources. BioSchemas are extending specifications from Schema.org, reusing existing metadata standards. This is in line with Google and other major search engines, which already utilise Schema.org's schemas for search optimisation.

We have also started to actively promote the use of 'bioschemas' among content providers. A first follower was GOBLET, whose training portal has embedded the new BioSchemas-proposed mark-up within their training pages. Ultimately, our goal is for all content providers to adhere to the agreed schemas, making the job of search engines more efficient, and scrapers redundant.

Our next immediate task is to increase the content from ELIXIR Nodes, and to further promote take-up of the evolving 'bioschemas'. At the same time, to make further efficiency gains and broaden the scope of the resource, we are partnering with the emerging US BD2K's Training Coordination Centre, which has a similar remit to that of TeSS, sharing expertise, training resources and technical know-how.

This ELIXIR-organised webinar attracted over 300 attendees (and over 400 registrations), of which more than half were academics, the rest from the private sector; this is the highest number and webinar attendance rate recorded by ELIXIR to date.

Results and Impact With two colleagues I wrote a blog post to elaborate on the discussioin that followed a workshop on FAIR practices and efforts at the Open Science FAIR event. The blog has trigged lots of discussion and positive comments around the need to reduce the number of coordination activities. Coordination is also a necessary evil, but to be effective, a coordination effort has to be realistic and targeted at the right level.
