US partnering award : Exploring avian host and viral determinants of susceptibility to influenza virus infection

Lead Research Organisation: The Pirbright Institute
Department Name: Avian Viral Diseases

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description This US Partnering Award facilitates meetings and exchanges between the partner laboratories but no actual research is funded. WE have developed a network of researchers in the the UK and US in the area of avian host and viral determinants of susceptibility to influenza virus infection. This network continues to function and will lead to collaborative projects when further funding allows. Three international exchanges of senior and mid level researchers during this project for discussion on collaboration. This has resulted in a co-supervised PhD student between Nottingham University, The Pirbright Institute and Penn State University. Exchange visits of this PhD student have been supported. The PhD students works has led to the hypothesis that duck and chicken p85beta subunits of PI3K differ in their interaction site for the influenza NS1 protein. This difference results in the differential activation of the PI3k pathways in chicken cells and duck cells following avian influenza virus infection. This work is being progressed as a joint PhD studentship that has been funded by University of Nottingham and The Pirbright Institute.
Exploitation Route The partners are open to the inclusion of new participants better to further the collaborative aims. Joint grant application is being submitted to BBSRC following on from work achieved by hosting PhD students in different labs through this award.

PI Contribution We have hosted a co-supervised PhD student twice at The Pirbright Institute. During these visits we have helped with viral infection of primary cells for analysis of PI3K pathway perturbations and generated new GM influenza viruses to help to understand if the difference in PI3K pathway activity observed between two different avian influenza viruses in avian cells was a result of difference in the NS1 protein. In addition we have provided support to the student regarding the future directions of the project and writing up and presentation of the material. Therefore we have provided reagents, practical expertise and intellectual input.
Collaborator Contribution The collaborators have provided access to data generated in their laboratories and intellectual input to the project.
