| Description | The scheme enabled an international collaboration between the UK, USA and Canda to be established. The original research partners are described in the collaborations and partnerships. All partners undertook field trials and analyses of barley grain produced in the different regions with their own funding. This has enabled a substantial amount of data on the performance of malting barley in the region. The results will be analysed during a PhD project as described in the narrative impact section |
| Exploitation Route | This will be used in a new collaborative project with New Heritage Barley Ltd (PhD iCASE partner) and Liverpool University to investigate genetic diversity of malting barley for agronomic and flavour traits. The student has been recruited, and started in October 2018. The student is making good progress in 2020 and the project is developing a novel approach for investigating flavour metabolites in barley |

| Description | The project has generated substantial interest from both academic and industry, and has contributed to the development of infrastructure to support the malting industry in the Eastern states and provinces of USA and Canada. The PI has been invited to present the project both in N America and Europe. The publicity generated has contributed to development of heritage crops for niche markets, developing the concept of adding value rather than commodity products. The collaboration enabled comparisons to be made in farming supply chains that is very relevant to all countries involved. For the UK, new insight into adding value and soil health has been gained. This has contributed to on-going discussions with UK farming groups, levy boards and agronomists. For example, PI hosted a workshop on Conservation agriculture at the JIC where the common concepts of conventional and organic farming were explored. With predicted future importance of conservation as 'public good' in UK farming, this discussion was very topical and relevant. The project has resulted in the establishment of a PhD project, starting in October 2018, in collaboration with the University of Liverpool and New Heritage Barley Ltd (NHB). The student will be analysing phenotypic traits recorded by the collaborating partners in the award. Recently, New Heritage Barley Ltd has been working on a new project with a partner in the distilling industry. NHB received seed from Cornell University to investigate the flavour profile of the distillate. NHB is also involved with trials for organic production of grain |
