Description In this International Scientific Interchange Scheme (ISIS) Short Term Travel Award a Postdoctoral Researcher from the PI's group visited the lab of Prof. Phil Bates (University of Southern Mississippi, USA) to learn how to perform metabolic flux analysis in developing oilseeds, using short-term radio-isotopic labelling experiments.
Exploitation Route The technical skills that the postdoc learnt on the visit are being used by others at the host organisation and are also being passed to other academic groups in the UK. The skills were also transferable to other experimental systems and assisted with our elucidation of the mechanism of carbon supply in arbuscular mycorrhiza.

Description Although not anticipated, we used the techniques learnt through this travel grant to help us show that arbuscular mycorrhiza feed on lipids from plants and that this is probably their major source of carbon. Arbuscular mycorrhiza form a key part of both natural and agro ecosystems and understanding the mechanism of nutrient exchange is potentially important for sustainable crop production.
