Description Learned methods new to my team. Most particularly, this involved techniques to investigate behaviour in Drosophila: the Buridan arena and optomotor response for the visual system, and learning and memory. The results obtained with this grant form part of a larger project.

This work is part of a larger body of work, which has just recently been published in eLife:

Guiyi Li, Manuel G Forero, Jill S Wentzell, Ilgim Durmus, Reinhard Wolf, Niki C Anthoney, Mieczyslaw Parker, Ruiying Jiang, Jacob Hasenauer, Nicholas James Strausfeld, Martin Heisenberg, Alicia Hidalgo (2020) "A Toll receptor map underlies structural brain plasticity" eLife DOI: 10.7554/eLife.52743
Exploitation Route it has brought new techniques to my lab.

Title New DeadEasy plugins to investigate brain plasticity
Description We develop several new DeadEasy plugins, to count automatically cell number in the adult brain of the fruit-fly Drosophila: (1) DeadEasy Optic Lobe; (2) DeadEasy Central Brain; (3) DeadEasy Kenyon Cells. These were used in the publication Li et al 2020 eLife.

Title Novel DeadEasy plugins to investigate brain plasticity in Drosophila
Description We have generated novel DeadEasy plugin to investigate brain plasticity in Drosophila. They enable us to automatically count cells throughout the brain: (1) DeadEasy Optic lobes for smaller cells; (2) DeadEasy Central Brain; (3) DeadEasy Kenyon Cells, for tightly packed cells. These plugins have been used in our publication Li et al 2020 eLife

PI Contribution The aim of this collaboration was for my research team to learn from our collaborators about behaviour assays in fruit-flies. Once we have data ready for publication, we will offer them authorship in a joint paper.
Collaborator Contribution We collaborated with Prof Martin Heisenberg and Dr Reinhard Wolf. One member of my team visited their lab to learn behaviour assays for fruit-flies. This helps our research by enriching the experimental approaches we can use to address our questions.
Impact Behavioural analysis in flies. Outcomes not ready yet, work in progress.

PI Contribution Guiyi Li from my lab went to the lab of Professor Martin Heisenberg to learn to carry out behaviour experiments including: the Buridan arena essay, the optomotor response and learning and memory. She brought these techniques back to the lab, as well as some kit made in the Würzburg workshop.
Collaborator Contribution Teaching staff from my lab to cary out some techniques, and providing us with kit to carry out those experiments. It is difficult to estimate the commercial value of the kit (hence the reason for not declaring it as an 'in kind' contribution, as they were designed and made by our collaborators' workshop, but they're extremely useful for our research.
Impact We have just recently submitted an article for publication that resulted from this collaboration: Li et al (submitted) A Toll-receptor map underlies structural brain plasticity.
