BRAZIL: Control of meristem size by DELLA proteins across plant species - Collaboration between JIC (UK) and the University of São Paulo (Brazil)

Lead Research Organisation: John Innes Centre
Department Name: Cell and Develop Biology

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description During the visit by PhD students Joao Correa and Leticia Ferigolo, we have transferred expertise in imaging, image analysis and ChIP-seq data analysis to the Brazilian partner. The experiments performed in the UK lab confirmed in a crop species (tomato) a finding that we have previously made in a model plant species: genes that regulate plant height have a previously unanticipated effect on the growing shoot tip, resulting in a change in the number of flowers produced. In the case of tomato, the change also affects fruit size.
Exploitation Route Genes that modify fruit size have the potential to be used for crop improvement. The findings will be disseminated primarily through the publicly available scientific literature, but also through direct discussions with representatives of breeding companies.

Description Collaboration with University of Sao Paulo, Brazil
Organisation Universidade de São Paulo
Department Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz"
Country Brazil
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution The Brazilian partner has access to state-of-the-art Bioimaging facilities at JIC, to unique expertise in imaging and image analysis in my lab. The Brazilian partner will also benefit from high-quality training for an early career scientist and widening of international scientific contacts during visits to the UK.
Collaborator Contribution The Brazilian partner gave us access to genetic resources not available in the UK institution and shared expertise in tomato developmental genetics. The collaborative experiments will also allow exploring the relevance of fundamental findings made in my lab to a wider range of crop species. In particular, this will expand the scope of work planned for my lab as part of the BBSRC-funded GEN Institute Strategic Programme Grant.
Impact Six-month visit by Brazilian PhD student to learn imaging and image analysis techniques and to perform experiments on the regulationmof meristem size in tomato.
