As an example of a key finding, a new method of carbon foot-printing for pasture-based cattle production systems that can assess the impacts of individual animals shows that the implications of livestock farming on climate change should not be drawn from aggregate statistics. This study demonstrates the true value of primary data being collected by the North Wyke Farm Platform. This finding relates to this project - LCA of pasture-based beef (PI: Michael Lee; Funding AHDB; Period 2016-2018). See also: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0959652617324125. Another example of a key finding concerns a DEFRA-funded programme set up to assess the reliability of methods and associated data for estimating soil loss from different land covers including grass used for ruminant farming. Defra had previously spent ~£1million on a national survey of soil erosion based on the use of fallout radiocaesium (137Cs) inventories to estimate soil loss rates. In the programme, independent evidence was assembled for grassland soil loss for >70 sites, including the NWFP using the water flume data. The comparisons between the radiocaesium data and sediment yield-based (e.g. the flumes on the NWFP) approaches by soil types revealed a significant issue with the radiocaesium surveys with the soil loss rates being far too high. The scientific findings were summarised in a paper in Earth Science Reviews (see link below) and the outputs have resulted in radiocaesium surveys not being used by government. The findings are also important internationally, since the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been pushing the use of radiocaseium approaches globally (including for example in GCRF focus countries) for years but our findings showed the data are extremely unreliable and inaccurate, thereby leading to incorrect management decisions. Exploitation Route	For given example 1, above: mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions originating from ruminants could be easier than traditionally thought-if we are able to select the right animals through the right screening methods. For given example 2, above: the reliable estimation of soil loss from agriculture is of huge importance at any scale. And as indicated, already taken up by Government.

Description	CORE HYPOTHESIS The platform is designed to test the following overarching hypothesis, which was put together following a thorough review of Rothamsted's discoveries since its establishment in 1843: Through improved land management, it is possible to produce nutritious food in a sustainable manner - as evidenced by economic, environmental and social metrics we define and measure - even under a growing population and a changing climate. Research carried out at our facility will help identify land management strategies to optimise the transfer of essential nutrients from soil to crops, livestock and then into food, thereby contributing to a healthy diet and cleaner natural environment at the same time. CORE REMIT The core remit of the platform is the comparison of treatments using a farm systems approach. The core hypothesis reflects this via the calculation of "sustainability metrics" that can accurately predict the long-term performance of each treatment - economically, environmentally and socially. Metrics are directly calculated from the platform's fine resolution data collections; and are carefully chosen to be transferrable to other farming systems, across the UK and the world. In this way, outputs from the platform directly influence sustainable land use both nationally and internationally. A critical over-arching challenge concerns approaches for reliably detecting the impacts of the treatments per se, in the context of natural hydro-climatic variability and inherent limitations of the platform design itself. The acknowledgment of spatio-temporal effects in the system is critical, either advancing science through a direct understanding of such dynamic processes or determining a sufficient observational scale so that a given hypothesis can be reliably tested, independent of such effects. Static spatial confounders also exert an influence, such as topography, soil class, and the physical layout of the fields. PAST, CURRENT AND PLANNED TREATMENTS The platform currently consists of three pasture-based livestock farming systems, each consisting of five component catchments over 21 ha. Catchments comprise single or multiple fields, that are heavily monitored to provide fine resolution data on all inputs, outputs and events. The timeline of each system's treatment are as follows: • From April 2011 to March 2013, all three pasture-based livestock farming systems were as one (permanent pasture) with no separate treatments in operation. This is the baseline period. • From April 2013 to September 2015, two of three systems gradually transitioned into the first post-baseline phase, one re-sown with high sugar grasses (red system), the other re-sown with high sugar grass, white clover mix (blue system). The remaining (green) system continued as permanent pasture and will always do so, for long-term monitoring. • From September 2015 to April 2019, the first post-baseline phase is in full operation across all three livestock farming systems and pasture treatments. • From April 2019, the first post-baseline phase will embark on a transition to a second post-baseline phase, where the blue system transitions to a diverse multi-functional pasture, while the red system transitions to an arable system growing human edible crops. Given the red system will transition to an arable system, the livestock linked to this system will be housed representing a fourth (brown) system (or treatment) for evaluation of more intensive finishing and fine resolution monitoring. SELECTED TREATMENT HYPOTHESES Hypotheses associated with the baseline period include: • Emissions to water under best practice lowland grazing farming will still exceed intrinsic losses as driven by soil type and slope. • Emissions to water under best practice lowland grazing farming will still exceed some environmental thresholds for aquatic biology. • Animal performance will be benchmarked within typical UK production levels (sheep and beef) Hypotheses associated with the first post-baseline period include: • The re-seeding of permanent grassland with varieties that increase C sequestration and improve animal nutrition provide more sustainable grassland systems. • The use of clover in pasture-based livestock production offers a high-risk high-return option for both commercial producers and the natural environment. • Re-seeding of permanent pasture will provide greater returns in terms of animal performance than permanent pasture and in concert, reduce emission intensity. Hypotheses associated with the second post-baseline period include: • In agro-ecological zones where the geographical environment does not suit human-edible crop production, farming systems without livestock are unsustainable - economically, environmentally and socially. • Intensive housed finishing of cattle provides more sustainable outputs than extended grazing systems - economically, environmentally and socially. • Multi-functional swards with no in-organic fertilisation can deliver comparable sustainable returns - economically, environmentally and socially. Impact	Our paper (published in Cleaner Production) and subsequent data publication (published in Data-in-Brief) developed a novel method to account for these effects using the high resolution data collected at the North Wyke Farm Platform. We demonstrated that the performance of animals, in terms of liveweight gain or average daily gains, significantly affects a system's carbon footprint. The cause of this was largely determined with the finding that poorly performing animals' carbon footprints are exponentially rather than linearly larger than their better-performing counterparts.

PI Contribution	Background and scientific objectives The overall objective of this project is to develop collaborations and share knowledge between two world renowned research institutes with expertise in grassland/livestock research. Grasslands occupy over 40% of the global biosphere1 and contribute significantly to the global production of milk and meat, and thus are a vital factor in global food security. Pasture occupies 61% of the UK's agricultural land2. In Uruguay, the total area of grazed grassland amounts to 12.7 million hectares, representing 78% of Uruguay's agricultural land3. Both countries have similarities in their grassland-based animal production, whilst climate conditions offer a gradient that is pertinent for common discussion of methodological approaches, scientific advances and knowledge gaps.
Collaborator Contribution	Through a partnership between Rothamsted Research (RRes) in the UK and the Instituto National de Investigacion Agropecuaria (INIA) in Uruguay, we aim to develop farm and environmental metrics using long-term data from two grassland livestock experimental platforms with comparable climate but contrasting geographies and soil types by: • Promoting scientific exchange of knowledge and best practice through reciprocal visits and workshops involving research staff; • Promoting training through reciprocal visits and workshops involving students and early-career researchers; • Pooling resources and capacities through sharing of experimental and field facilities.
