Generation of molecules, tools and reagents for pathogen recognition, antigen presentation and effector responses in avians

Lead Research Organisation: The Pirbright Institute
Department Name: UNLISTED

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Technical Summary

A detailed understanding of how avians respond to pathogens and vaccines is limited by incomplete knowledge of the molecular, cellular and anatomical components of an immune system that differs between birds and widely-studied biomedical species. The aim of this proposal is to generate tools, reagents and assays and use them to elucidate aspects of the immune system that will give a fuller understanding of basic processes and the ability to elicit more rapid, efficacious and sustainable immunity to pathogen challenge.

Description We have developed tools for understanding specific immune responses and the cells that generate them. These include the development of reagents against the chicken immune checkpoint regulatory molecules chPD-1 and chPD-L1. This unique set of reagents are valuable tools for the development of potential tools for treatment of chronic diseases including neoplastic diseases such as Marek's diseases.
Exploitation Route These tools will be of value in the design of new vaccines and the testing of their effectiveness.
