Developing genetic control methods for arthropod vectors

Lead Research Organisation: THE PIRBRIGHT INSTITUTE
Department Name: UNLISTED

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Technical Summary

Arthropod pests transmit or vector viral pathogens causing morbidity, suffering and economic harms to animals and humans. The best known such arthropod vectors may be mosquitoes, but mites and ticks, as well as other insects, are also significant disease vectors. We aim to develop new genetics-based control tools to supplement and complement existing control methods. We can use the natural propensity of the pest arthropod to seek out and mate the opposite sex as the basis for highly specific control methods targeted on the pest arthropod with minimal off-target effects. We focus on two broad approaches, aiming either (i) to reduce the numerical size of the pest population – “population suppression”, also the aim of most conventional approaches such as the use of insecticidal chemicals or (ii) to reduce the ability of the mosquito to transmit a specific pathogen, or set of pathogens. We are also exploring ways to introduce such genes into target pest populations. In each case we take a synthetic biology approach, with systematic laboratory development combined with mathematical modelling.

Description This award represents one year of a component of an Institute Strategic Programme Grant (ISPG) to The Pirbright Institute. This element relates to the conceptual and laboratory development of genetic pest management methods for mosquitoes and other pest insects, including gene drive methods. This research laid the foundation for further work, both within this ISPG and elsewhere, on locally-acting gene drive systems in mosquitoes and other pest insects.
Exploitation Route Genetic pest management is a rapidly advancing field, and our work in this area is used both to develop technical resources and to inform policy and regulation. Based on this underpinning work we now participate in two international consortia aimed at further development of such systems.

Description This award represents one year of a component of an Institute Strategic Programme Grant to The Pirbright Institute. This element relates to the conceptual and laboratory development of genetic pest management methods for mosquitoes and other pest insects, including gene drive methods. Our work in this area has contributed to policy development in this relatively new area, stimulated by our work in this area and informed by our research findings. Specific aspects of this include involvement as a Nominated Expert in the Open-ended Online Forum on Synthetic Biology of the Cartagena Protocol on Biodiversity (CBD), and as a Member of the Technical Subgroup on Synthetic Biology and Biodiversity Conservation of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in various aspects of policy development. We have also helped the Institute's communications group develop a outreach event around gene editing and modified mosquitoes, which has been used at a number of regional and national public events, including GLive (Guildford) and the Royal Institution, to stimulate awareness, understanding and discussion of this type of technology.
