Development of genetic resources that underpin studies of seed quality in pea
Lead Research Organisation:
John Innes Centre
Department Name: Contracts Office
Abstract
Populations of recombinant inbred and near-isogenic lines will be developed and maintained to underpin genetic and biochemical research on seed quality and agronomic traits. As novel germplasm becomes available through collaborations and/or the JIC Germplasm Resources Unit, this will be used to develop new populations. Seed composition mutants will be classified, catalogued and multiplied for use in externally funded projects.

Description | We have developed new resources that will lead to enhanced seed and protein quality in legume crops. We are studying the effects of gene deletions and additional novel mutations on the control of seed quality traits in pea and are combining these mutations to generate novel seed protein profiles. Natural variation in exotic germplasm has been mined in order to make large changes to seed metabolism in support of fundamental studies as well as strategic uses. |
Exploitation Route | Novel germplasm with characterised biochemical effects and associated genetic information will be exploited in breeding programmes aimed at improved food and feed uses of pulse crops. Depending on the functional properties of flour and protein from novel mutant combinations, some may provide advantages over current varieties in the development of new food products, particularly those aimed at providing high nutritional products to the gluten-free market. |
