Abstract

We are investigating how dinitrogen gas is reduced to ammonia by rhizobia inside legume nodules. In particular we are investigating the mechanism by which plants supply a carbon and energy source to the bacteria. The biochemical pathway by which this carbon source is oxidized by the bacteria to produce energy is crucial to the energy balance of dinitrogen reduction. We are investigating how amino acid and organic oxidation is regulated in rhizobia to optimize dinitrogen reduction. In particular we are investigating the role of GABA oxidation as well as the regulatory role of malic enzyme and how these pathways are integrated via the TCA-cycle.
