Defra Pulse Crop Genetic Improvement Network (PCGIN)

Abstract
The Pulse Crop Genetic Improvement Network (PCGIN), funded by Defra, is a platform that serves the process of legume crop improvement in the UK. It establishes the route by which scientific resources, results and knowledge are delivered to breeders, producers and end users, providing a link between these groups and the research base to achieve added value for pulse crops. It provides resources, expertise and understanding that are drawn upon by both public and commercial sectors in breeding, analysis, and in the definition and improvement of product quality relating to both commercial and public goods. It promotes and executes the translation of genomic research tools to crop improvement, consistent with both the needs of UK industry, and Defra objectives relating to sustainable agriculture. Furthermore, it provides links with, and involvement in, European pulse crop research programmes. Crop diversification and lowering inputs are major drivers for sustainable agricultural policy. Pulse crops can contribute positively to these two policy goals because, as a consequence of biological nitrogen fixation, they require minimal inputs and are less environmentally polluting that other crops such as cereals or brassicas. They act as a very effective break crop in our cereal dominated rotation. However, there is a need to make legume crops more attractive to farmers, and to increase the market value of their product. These two are the major strands of PCGIN research activity. Limitations to growing pulse crops in rotations are being addressed through research aimed at improving crop performance and reliability. The genetic basis for agronomic traits such as standing ability, yield and disease will be established. Pulse crops are also an efficient source of plant-derived protein for food and animal feed. Increasing the market value of seed products will depend on genetic studies that define and underpin the traits that limit seed quality.

Improving the nutritional quality of pea.
Description | The genetics of seed quality traits and components of yield are being studied in pea and faba bean crops within the network consortium. Genetic markers are being developed for a number of traits, enabling breeders to use molecular information to assist their selections in the breeding of robust and superior legume crops. Among these are markers linked to yield as well as seed traits, including stability of seed colour in pea. Genetic and germplasm variation have been explored for the seed colour stability trait, with discovery of considerable allelic variation. The back-cross lines containing some of this variation in near-isogenic form will be tested for seed phenotypes under a wide range of conditions. This trait alone has a large impact on the economics of growing a pea crop for the food industry. The data relating to yield and seed size as traits of major importance to the pea crop have been consolidated into a publication (Moreau et al., 2018). These quantitative trait loci (QTL) are underpinned by few genetic marker data; consequently, the relevant populations have been taken to single-seed descent lines for more advanced genetic marker analysis, using single nucleotide poymorphic markers. Ellis et al. (2018) describe further genetic variation in seed metabolites and associated genetic loci, some of which may underpin the QTL for major seed traits. 'Speed breeding' in pea is now enabled, using the methodologies described by Watson et al. (2018) and Ghosh et al. (2018). We reviewed the potential for improving pulse crops as a source of protein, starch and micronutrients (Robinson et al., 2019); this was a response to an invitation to contribute to an evaluation of the broad dietary shifts required to mitigate anthropogenic climate change and promote human health, where pulse crops can make an important contribution. |
Exploitation Route | The resources that are being developed within PCGIN require further development to ensure their uptake in the widest sense among the breeding, food and feed industries. Variant germplasm is being used to introgress desirable genes into breeders' material. Novel sources of genetic variation influencing seed and plant traits will be exploited for further crop improvement. Knowldege transfer activities take place extensively throughout the network. The stakeholder meeting held in November 2018 involved a wide range of stakeholders across many sectors in a 'Marketplace of Ideas' session to match industry needs with academic solutions. Some new interactions have emanated from this activity. The stakeholder meeting in November 2019 highlighted the growing demand for pulse products from an industry perspective, largely reflecting the growth of the meat-free protein markets. This meeting provided an excellent opportunity for engagement with the food industry. |

Description | Marker data and novel germplasm are being generated for transfer to breeders and end users. Many of these resources require further development to ensure their uptake in the widest sense among the breeding, food and feed industries and have been taken into the current PCGIN project (2018-2023). Variant germplasm is being used to introgress desirable genes into breeders' material. Knowledge transfer activities ensure that the novel sources of genetic variation identified, and those following new genetic screens, will be exploited for crop trait improvement. The UN International Year of Pulses 2016 provided the opportunity to speak to the wider public in science cafes, breeders' day and visitor groupings about the benefits of pulses to health, economy and the environment. Stakeholder engagement was a high priority at the November 2018 stakeholder meeting and a 'Marketplace of Ideas' session implemented where the 'needs' of industry were matched with academic 'solutions'. The stakeholder meeting in November 2019 highlighted the growing demand for plant protein from an industry perspective, largely reflecting the growth of the meat-free protein markets. Here pea offers many advantages over current sources. ISCF-TFP-SA-JIC (Transforming Food Production Seeding Award) Powering Pea Productivity event updates On 03/10/19, JIC coordinated a meeting for PGRO, NIAB, JIC, an independent agronomist, and a representative from Dalton Seeds as a follow up to the Powering Pea Productivity (PPP) event where the meeting reviewed the action plan and assigned tasks. Following the meeting, JIC took the lead (on behalf of the pulse crop supply chain) on an UKRI Transforming UK Food Systems application and established new links with UEA ENV. The PeaYEN consortium also took the lead on an iUK Transforming Food Production application. From the PPP meeting, a decision was taken to apply for JIF funding to support a 6-year Independent Fellowship (designed for translational genetics and genomics research in pea) position. The funding was approved by JIF, and the newly named Ben Gill Translational Research Fellowship appointment was advertised. Interviews were held 22-23 January 2020, and the successful Fellow will start in August 2020. On 15/11/19, JIC attended a UKRI Transforming Food Production meeting to discuss building an interdisciplinary academic consortium. JIC secured 13 letters of support from companies and the coordination of an expression of Interest to the UKRI grant call. Applicants expected to be notified in February 2020. Three actions arose from this meeting: 1. An independent, PGRO led, ISCF Future Food Production systems application to Innovate UK for an industrial Pea Consortium entitled 'Pulse-ATE - Pulse Agri-Food Transformation for the Environment', 2. A JIC led ISCF Future Food Production systems award application to BBSRC entitled 'Legumes as a food for improved human health and a sustainable environment' 3. A 3-month JIC Researcher/Consultant appointment (December 2019 to February 2020) to investigate the potential commercialisation of pea germplasm (i.e. Pea Breeding spinouts and the current market appetite). N.B. A follow-on business plan from the researcher will be available in due course. PCGIN Stakeholder Meeting - Grantham, Lincolnshire On 14/11/19, this meeting presented the latest developments within genetic research on UK pulse crops. Progress on disease resistance, agronomy and seed quality traits, and genetic tools and resources, were presented by PCGIN partners. A series of industry perspective talks dealt with future market opportunities and relevant international developments, with time for interactions over lunch. This was an industry-led stakeholder meeting. A report from the meeting is available on pages 14-16 of the GARNish Newsletter December 2019 report available at: https://garnetcommunity.org.uk/sites/default/files/newsltr/GARNish32_Online_0.pdf |
