Technical Summary
Ascites, the accumulation of fluid in the peritoneum, is one of the most significant metabolic conditions affectingbroiler chicken production and is partly under gentic control. This project combines quantitave genetic and genomic tools to dissect this trait. Using data from a SNP based screen of Aviagen's populations we will attempt to identify candidate genome regions and genes associated with suscepttibilty to Ascites. Prior to the start of the project preliminary analysis will have been performed by Aviagen on the data from the SNP screen. The project comprises: 1/ Confirming SNP associations and prediction of parental ascites genotypes. 2/ Confirming SNP associations is sires in independant samples and performing within family linkage analysis. 3/ Exploring potential candidate genes underlying detected associations/linkages for causative polymorphisms.4/ testing identified causative SNPs in other populations. Together these components will throw light on the gentic control of ascites and the potential for marker-assisted reduction of susceptibilty to this condition.
