Scoping Workshop to establish UK East African collaborations in Practical Synthetic Biology: Health (Human and livestock), Industry, Environment and Innovation

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Technical Summary

This proposal aims to build upon a preliminary visit and organise a broader UK-East Africa scoping meeting on synthetic biology to explore and identify practical applications of relevance to East Africa for synthetic biology technologies. This meeting will also lead to the development of a UK-E. African research network and the establishment of potential research collaborations focused around the identified application areas. The meeting is part of a joint UK synthetic biology Africa initiative (see LinkedIN Africa Synthetic Biology Group) with a separate meeting being planned in South Africa coordinated 2 by Jim Haselhoff and colleagues (Cambridge). Together we have coordinated our meeting programs and timings and have included cross representation of speakers where appropriate. Together both meetings will ensure a broad coverage of the African continent and both meetings will also share outputs and the identified research networks as part a broader UKAfrica synthetic biology initiative. Also both meetings are focused on identifying application for near-term practical synthetic biology solutions and technologies (e.g. low cost paperbased diagnostics) as well as seeding the development of synthetic biology research and training on the African continent through exchanges, collaboration and the sharing of open source teaching resources.

Description The workshop led to an large network of researchers and policymakers in East Africa focusing on synthetic biology and how it could impact the region. This continues with further discussions and strategies on how to develop synthetic biology education and research in the region. A follow up workshop was held in London in June 2019 where a high-level Kenyan government delegation was hosted by myself and various departments in BEIS. The Kenyan government is now considering how to implement the findings of the workshop.
Exploitation Route The workshop generated a network of UK and East African researchers that could form a consortium for funding. Unfortunately this consortium was rejected by GCRF for further funding in the recent research Hub call despite comprising key leaders in the region including the government agency NACOSTI - no feedback has been given.

Description The workshop led to a NACOSTI report which has been the basis for developing a synthetic biology roadmap for Kenya and a first grant application in synthetic biology. The report from the workshop has proved to be influential and has been used for NACOSTI to develop a Kenyan specific strategy for synthetic biology. In 2020 a series of workshops and meeting were convened by the Prof. Boga PS Livestock, Food, Agriculture Kenyan government and I was invited to present. Prof. Boga is championing synthetic biology and in particular the establishment of a Kenyan Biofoundry to accelerate synthetic biology developments in the region.
