Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Modelling drug release from polymer-free coronary stents with microporous surfaces.

| Description | We are studying how to optimise the dug release from stents which are used to scaffold blood vessels in patients with coronary or peripheral artery disease. So far this has been modelling the release mathematically and using simple biological systems in the laboratory. Towards the end of the project, stents were optimally coated with a drug and tested in an animal model to see if our predictions on drug release have been correct. The stents have now been tested in an animal model. Data is being analysed and will be written-up in the form of a publication soon. |
| Exploitation Route | Ultimately they may be used to tailor stents to specific patients rather than using a single stent with a single drug loading in every patient regardless of patient variables. |

| Description | Several publication on the mathematical side of the project have arisen from this award. A collaboration has been established with Biomer technologies to optimise the stent coating process which will assist in the latter stages of the project. The data from the animal study has been written up and has now been accepted for publication in Journal of Controlled release. A new PhD students has begun working on an extension of this project (October 2018) and the hope is that preliminary data from these experiments will form the basis of a grant application to continue this work. |
