Description This was a cross institutional project to test the use of new materials, manufactured in a cheap and sustainable way, as substrates for growing human cells outside the body. Material was generated by one project partner, physical properties of the substrates were measured by another project partner, and then material was provided to our laboratory to test cell culture compatibility. We developed technical methods to allow testing of material provided in various forms for cell compatibility and showed some alternate behavior between cells on different surfaces. However we identified more research was needed to either create the technical capability to test materials in different morphological forms for influence on cells, or to manufacture the different materials in a manner that maintained equivalent morphology to allow independent testing of other variable physical properties.
Exploitation Route Further basic work will be taken forward to more thoroughly characterize the materials, and develop morphological structures compatible with standard cell culture systems. In the longer run we would anticipate re-visiting the suitability of the material for biological applications.
