Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Planned Impact

Not applicable

Description The project is aimed at setting up a state-of-art research facility to conduct fundamental and applied research on high efficiency and low emission internal combustion engines. All the equipment have been ordered and most of them have been delivered. In order to accommodate the new equipment and make use of the equipment for future research works, a new optical engine laboratory is being refurbished to install the new single cylinder optical engine and the high-speed laser and optical equipment.

A partially sponsored PhD student project has been awarded to carry out advanced research on fuel injection and mixture formation in the direct injection gasoline engine by means of the equipment procured by the Grant.

Description In supporting work with industry, boosting productivity and growth. Specifically, the equipment has been used by a couple of PhD students since 2017 to 2020 to conduct joint research on the fuel injection process for the high efficiency direct injection gasoline engines. The experimental results have been used to develop and validate the CFD design tools in the development of the new engines by ChangAn UK. In particular, the improved CFD tool has led to the implementation of a combustion system design to significantly reduce the emissions during the cold-start operation of passenger cars.
