UK National Quantum Technology Hub in Sensing and Timing

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The Quantum Technology Hub in Sensors and Timing, a collaboration between 7 universities, NPL, BGS and industry, will bring disruptive new capability to real world applications with high economic and societal impact to the UK. The unique properties of QT sensors will enable radical innovations in Geophysics, Health Care, Timing Applications and Navigation. Our established industry partnerships bring a focus to our research work that enable sensors to be customised to the needs of each application. The total long term economic impact could amount to ~10% of GDP.

Gravity sensors can see beneath the surface of the ground to identify buried structures that result in enormous cost to construction projects ranging from rail infrastructure, or sink holes, to brownfield site developments. Similarly they can identify oil resources and magma flows. To be of practical value, gravity sensors must be able to make rapid measurements in challenging environments. Operation from airborne platforms, such as drones, will greatly reduce the cost of deployment and bring inaccessible locations within reach.

Mapping brain activity in patients with dementia or schizophrenia, particularly when they are able to move around and perform tasks which stimulate brain function, will help early diagnosis and speed the development of new treatments. Existing brain imaging systems are large and unwieldy; it is particularly difficult to use them with children where a better understanding of epilepsy or brain injury would be of enormous benefit. The systems we will develop will be used initially for patients moving freely in shielded rooms but will eventually be capable of operation in less specialised environments. A new generation of QT based magnetometers, manufactured in the UK, will enable these advances.

Precision timing is essential to many systems that we take for granted, including communications and radar. Ultra-precise oscillators, in a field deployable package, will enable radar systems to identify small slow-moving targets such as drones which are currently difficult to detect, bringing greater safety to airports and other sensitive locations.

Our world is highly dependent on precise navigation. Although originally developed for defence, our civil infrastructure is critically reliant on GNSS. The ability to fix one's location underground, underwater, inside buildings or when satellite signals are deliberately disrupted can be greatly enhanced using QT sensing. Making Inertial Navigation Systems more robust and using novel techniques such as gravity map matching will alleviate many of these problems.

In order to achieve all this, we will drive advanced physics research aimed at small, low power operation and translate it into engineered packages to bring systems of unparalleled capability within the reach of practical applications. Applied research will bring out their ability to deliver huge societal and economic benefit. By continuing to work with a cohort of industry partners, we will help establish a complete ecosystem for QT exploitation, with global reach but firmly rooted in the UK.

These goals can only be met by combining the expertise of scientists and engineers across a broad spectrum of capability. The ability to engineer devices that can be deployed in challenging environments requires contributions from physics electronic engineering and materials science. The design of systems that possess the necessary characteristics for specific applications requires understanding from civil and electronic engineering, neuroscience and a wide range of stakeholders in the supply chain. The outputs from a sensor is of little value without the ability to translate raw data into actionable information: data analysis and AI skills are needed here. The research activities of the hub are designed to connect and develop these skills in a coordinated fashion such that the impact on our economy is accelerated.

Planned Impact

The Hub for Sensors and Timing will build on an exceptional track record of delivering significant impact based on world-class research. Our initiatives for impact include:
1) Supply of a trained, skilled workforce. We will train over 500 PDRAs, PhDs and undergraduate students in QT Innovation; our sector-leading first year PhD training course will be developed into a self-contained taught Masters' course accessible to industry-based participants
2) Industry-led collaborative projects; in Phase 1 we delivered £75M of leverage, expected to rise to £100M in Phase 2
3) Educate over 200 companies in the potential of QT, influencing investment behaviour through technoeconomic data such as Value Chain Analysis
4) A pipeline of technology exploitation opportunities for the UK through IP capture. The first Hub captured 145 ROIs and 15 patents, we expect this to increase in Phase 2
5) Reach and educate over 100 000 people via our public engagement activities, social media campaigns, and website

Long term, Quantum sensors with improved performance to current technologies will provide significant savings and generate new high-value markets. We will develop technologies relevant for 4 key sectors:

Infrastructure Productivity. Use of gravity sensors within surveys could reduce project overspend from 100% to 20%. We will focus initially on railway applications, yielding a potential saving of >£250M p.a. Mobile gravity sensors will accurately locate buried infrastructure, reducing utilities incurred costs of >£1.5 bn in street works and >6 million days of road disruption.

Oil and Environment. Conservative estimates indicate markets for quantum-sensors in oil surveys (£45M p.a.), volcano monitoring (>£200M), and carbon sequestration sites (>£100M p.a.) with obvious economic and environmental benefits, e.g. streamlining footprint and cost of oil exploration and enabling efforts to combat global warming. Use within soil-monitoring systems will facilitate 10% improvement in crop yield, helping to feed the global population

Healthcare. The economic cost of dementia is estimated at $1trn (World Alzheimer's Report 2015). MEG can monitor brain function which, with quantum sensors, can be made wearable. This will unlock new treatment pathways, enabling increased quality of life for patients and reducing the care load on society. Our magnetic brain scanning system will pave the way for myriad clinical and neuroscientific advances. Lifetime compliance enables data capture in children, enabling study of neurodevelopment. Free movement allows new experimental paradigms, e.g. in virtual environments, social interaction, or studying walking/falls in the elderly. At a cost <£100k, MEG could replace EEG as the technique of choice for epilepsy monitoring. Other clinical applications include brain injury, mental health and dementia. A 10% penetration of the 10,000 hospitals in Europe and US would yield a market of £100M.

Timing and Navigation. An estimated 6-7% of GDP in Western countries is dependent on SatNav (EU Commission 2011). In the UK, sectors generating a total of £206bn in GVA (11.3% of UK GDP) are supported directly by GNSS (London Economics 2017). The military navigation market was $8.4Bn in 2017 growing to $12.1Bn by 2023 (Markets & Markets: June 2018). Cold atom technology has the potential to supplant classical units, gaining a market share worth £7.5Bn in 2017 (QT Blackett review). Quantum timing could provide a GNSS resilient solution for telecoms, energy networks and financial trade impacting 4-5% of GDP. Ultra-low phase noise oscillators using optical clocks promise a step change in high resolution and distributed array radar - critical to aerospace and automotive applications for unmanned aerial / automotive vehicles - and will enable radar and communications systems to be placed closer together in the spectral allocation, freeing up highly valuable frequency bands in the congested EM spectrum.

Description The Hub has contributed to the development of a commercial ecosystem in the area of Quantum Technology, in particular quantum sensors and timing. Highlight successes are a joint venture spin-off Cerca for quantum magnetoencephalography systems, which has already sold two units internationally, as well as BAE Systems, BP, BT and PA collaborating with the Hub to create an end-user driven roadmap for quantum sensors supporting the resilience of critical national infrastructure in the UK. The Hub findings have also been picked up by the press and contributed to international roadmapping activities. One example is the identification of Quantum Sensors as one of the top 10 emerging technologies in 2020 by the World Economic forum, mentioning explicitly two of the Hub activities in their reasoning. The hub research has led to the creation of a second spin-off DeltaG, which aims at the commercialisation of gravity gradient instrumentation. The hub has contributed to a large number of policy briefings and standards discussions, supporting the development of a QT commercial ecosystem in the UK.

Title Magneto-optical Trapping in a Near Surface Borehole
Description Trial Data includes photodiode data from a magneto-optical trap designed for a borehole. Photodiode data records the fluorescence of an atom cloud held within the trap as it is loaded at various depths within the borehole and on the surface both before and after lowering into the borehole. Data is recorded in CSV files chronologically from 0-267 where each CSV contains a loading curve and in some cases an extended period of atom cloud flourescence. Note that a significant amount of background light is also present from the lasers. Background light can be deduced from the region before the loading curve in each recording. The depths and purpose of each file is recorded in the folder structure. The folder name notes the nature of the recording (stability measurement, in borehole measurement, surface measurement) and the next folder level details the position of the borehole MOT at the time of recording of all included files.

Title Research data for Quantum Gas-Enabled Direct Mapping of Active Current Density in Percolating Networks of Nanowires
Description Electrically percolating nanowire networks are amongst the most promising candidates for next-generation transparent electrodes. Scientific interest in these materials stems from their intrinsic current distribution heterogeneity, leading to phenomena like percolating pathway re-routing and localized self-heating, which can cause irreversible damage. Without an experimental technique to resolve the current distribution, and an underpinning nonlinear percolation model, one relies on empirical rules and safety factors to engineer materials. We introduce Bose-Einstein condensate microscopy to address the long-standing problem of imaging active current flow in 2D materials. We report on performance improvement of this technique whereby observation of dynamic redistribution of current pathways becomes feasible. We show how this, combined with existing thermal imaging methods, eliminates the need for assumptions between electrical and thermal properties. This will enable testing and modelling individual junction behaviour and hotspot formation. Investigating both reversible and irreversible mechanisms will contribute to improved performance and reliability of devices.

PI Contribution The UoB team is responsible for the project coordination, a work package "Hollow Atom Guide", and the final integration. Within the work package, I will validate the concept of a "hollow atom guide" through simulation and experiments. One key issue in the work package is to identify suitable optical wavelengths to minimise the potential systematic errors caused by the hollow atom guide. After finishing the concept validation, I will integrate the hollow atom guide with the output from my partner to build a quantum gravity sensor to evaluate the performance.
Collaborator Contribution My partner is responsible for two tasks. One is the design and manufacture of a 3D-printed ultrahigh vacuum chamber. The chamber design will employ a variable density triply periodic minimal surface gyroid matrix lattice to reduce the weight and minimise the continuous surface profile. The latter will also help to mitigate the eddy current generated by the magnetic field switching. Another is to design and manufacture a coil system based on a topological optimisation algorithm to minimise the switching time and energy consumption and to provide eddy current compensation.

Title A HIGHLY-COHERENT FREQUENCY-AGILE LASER SYSTEM, NOTABLY FOR USE WITH, OR IN, COLD ATOM QUANTUM DEVICES
Description A laser system (1) comprises an in-phase quadrature-phase optical modulator (4) to generate a two-tone, single-sideband, suppressed-carrier optical signal by modulation of an input laser beam, and a fibre Bragg grating (6) to receive and filter the two-tone, single-sideband, suppressed-carrier optical signal output by the in-phase quadrature phase optical modulator (4). The passband of the fibre Bragg grating (6) excludes harmonics of the frequencies of the two tones in the two-tone, single-sideband, suppressed-carrier optical signal output by the in-phase quadrature-phase optical modulator (4). Thus, the system (1) is frequency-agile and produces highly-phase-coherent light beams.

Results and Impact Gave talk - What can quantum sensors do for you? My PA received the attached following the evening lecture:
Dear Teresa
Many thanks to you and Kai for making last night's lecture possible. Please give him my thanks for a fascinating and stimulating talk packed full of exciting ideas that the team are working on. His infectious enthusiasm held an audience of 105 devices which we always estimate will have two participants on about 25% of the devices so around 130 society members. We were all spared a journey in the freezing cold to the theatre but missed the opportunity to invite Kai for a pre lecture dinner.
Best wishes, stay safe

10-11, Y11 (15 & 16 year olds) around 28 students (parallel session)

12.20-13.20, Y12 (different students) around 44 students (parallel session)
14.00-15.00, Y13 (different students) around 24 students

Students at NUAST have the pleasure to attend a session on medical physics held by Prof. Penny Gowland and Dr. Laura Bortolotti on the 6th December. The 1-h session was planned to be 30 minute lecture on the "begin of Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) and actual development in Nottingham" delivered by Prof. Gowland. Then, students had the choice to challenge themselves doing some activities. 5 activities were set on tables, students in group had 1 minute to working out the solution. Then, all together we gathered around each table and discuss on the scientific part of the activities. They were welcomed by being given a leaflet containing key points on MRI (definition, field strength from brain wave, passing through Earth magnetic field, to powerful MRI scanner) and 2 QR codes.
One activity was to match the light waves with the instrument uses (Figure). This allows to talk about interaction between water molecule and different light wavelength - don't put your hand in a microwave!!- and energy and the various medical physicist career as well. This has been used than to recap how the MR signal is formed.
They have a 3D foam model of a full body scan MRI to build, concession of Dr. Rebecca Dewey. This allowed to discuss how signal is collected - I have the sound of the machine recorded in my smartphone to play.
They have another three "matching" game that involves to pair the MR image of fruits, veggie and body with fruits, veg and organs names. This allow to see that is the water molecule that is often target and that "non-animated" object are easier to picture that moving organs..but also that a 3D object is virtually "sliced" using MRI! Different images were acquired ad different field strength, and so we discuss of the role of the field strength on obtaining good quality images. Also, one non-water-based image was in to show that different molecule could be seen and so (e.g.) ATP metabolism could be study - not only the anatomy but also the function. One image showed the brain veins and as expected, these were recognised as neurons instead. So, this provides me a link to talk about functional MRI, EEG and MEG.
If succeed, they will receive a "MRI champion" sticker whose reports the MRI picture of a star fruit, all happy about that!
The session closed with a question: "Do you think that the MRI scanner will make you levitate? ". Most of the students says yes - so I pointed out the QR code on the back of the leaflet has the link to the Ignobel prize on "levitating frog" to point out that 16 T were needed for a 60 g frog - so, there is no way for human to happen in the MRI scanner! The one in the front was used at the beginning as it reports the Nobel prize in Medicine for the discover of MRI. So, I suggest to them to have a look later at home to those!
