Workshop: UK Probability Meeting 2020

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Mathematics

Abstract

This is an application for partial funding for a 5-day research workshop in probability entitled Stochastic Modelling of Complex Systems, held at the University of Manchester, 30 March to 3 April 2020. The meeting will benefit UK mathematics by enhancing interactions between UK and international experts on recent developments and future study in probability and its applications to other areas of research. Particular emphases are placed on the participation of female academics and early career researchers.

Probability is an area of strength for the UK and importance for many other scientific disciplines. Our workshop focuses on the newly-developed applications of probability to other areas of research including statistical physics, mathematical ecology and random networks.

The workshop is centred on three mini-courses, given by internationally distinguished researchers, corresponding to the three themes mentioned above. The mini-courses will be complemented by twelve invited talks from leading researchers, alongside opportunities for PhD students and early career researchers to give contributed talks or present at a poster session.

Additionally, the proposed schedule of the workshop contains time set aside for break-out sessions and discussion groups, to facilitate exploration of new research directions and to support the formation of new collaborations.

Planned Impact

The impacts of a conference such as this are numerous and diverse, extending far beyond its duration. The workshop will bring together the UK probability community with internationally renowned researchers, and the workshop schedule is designed to stimulate and allow opportunities for new collaborations and discussions to develop. The attendees will learn new techniques at the cutting edge of modern probability from internationally-renowned invited lecturers, and will make new contacts and strengthen existing ones, which will lead to future impactful research. As such, a major impact of the workshop is to strengthen the UK research base in probability.

Our choice of topics have been chosen to be interdisciplinary, with close links to theoretical population genetics, mathematical ecology, stochastic modelling and mathematical physics. This will invigorate the UK research community, and result in impactful probabilistic research being carried out in probability and its numerous application areas over the coming years.

We place particular emphasis on the development of PhD students and other early career researchers in probability, a group of researchers with strong potential to produce impactful research in the future. This group of researchers will have the opportunity to present their work at one of the six scheduled 20 minutes contributed talks and at the poster session, and will have opportunities to interact with leading researchers at the scheduled breakout sessions.

To maximise the potential impact of the workshop, we will advertise widely through national mailing lists on probability and the applications areas in physics and biology and related fields, and networks of contacts at UK universities. We will also advertise to companies with an interest in the above and related research areas, and links through the Alan Turing Institute will also be used to reach the UK Data Science industrial community directly.
