Multiphysics and multiscale modelling for safe and feasible CO2 capture and storage

Abstract

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) involves capturing carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by power stations and other industrial processes and storing it in underground geological formation. The aim of this project is to gain an enhanced understanding of the impact of dynamic behaviour of carbon capture and storage using novel adsorbents. The proposed research involves development of advanced sorbents and numerical models to simulate the process of large scale CO2 capture and safe storage under variable power load (i.e. CO2 flow rate).

Planned Impact

Power generation constitutes a multi-billion dollar sector with a strong impact on the nation's welfare and prosperity. However, electricity generation using fossil fuels can only continue if the associated CO2 emissions are effectively captured and securely stored. CO2 capture and storage (CCS) has consequently been considered to be an unavoidable technology to meet this goal. The output of the proposed research will directly impact the environment by reducing an important green house gas from the atmosphere. The proposed work will also impact energy companies by providing viable means of capturing and safely storing their CO2 emission.

Title Maps of the size and distribution of CO2 emission sources in the UK (2019) 
Description A series of maps showing the spatial distribution and size of CO2 emission sources in the UK. Based on emissions data published by the UK National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory. There are 4 types of map provided: All CO2 emission sources for 2019 grouped by sector/category. A comparison of 2019 and 2020 emissions. A subset of the 2019 CO2 emission sources that could be abated by CCS, grouped by sector/category. Individual maps for each sector/category. Maps are provided in both PNG and PDF format. The included 'README' file contains further information, and the methodology used to produce the maps.

Description In this project we demonstrated an optimised sorption-enhance steam methane reforming (SE-SMR) process for efficient blue hydrogen production via both experimental and modelling-oriented research. Additionally, we investigated the geological injection of CO2 for storage and the implications of variable production load on storage considerations.
Exploitation Route Building on the outcome of the work carried out in that project, it would be appropriate to investigate some of the most important aspects of the PTS i.e. start-up/shutdown of an SE-SMR process, as well as the impact of different impurities in H2 AND CO2 products on transport and storage as this is considered critical for the viable operation of PTS at scale for blue hydrogen production
