DTP 2020-2021 King's College London

Lead Research Organisation: King's College London
Department Name: Imaging & Biomedical Engineering

Abstract

King's College London has embarked on a transformative initiative to expand the breadth and depth of its science and technology as a part of its Strategic Vision 2029. Growth in these areas will: build on existing core strengths within the university; build on the thriving interface with the university's health sciences; and expand into new areas of technology and engineering. Our EPSRC DTP funding provides the flexibility to target PhD studentships to priority research areas of growth, and to offer opportunities for doctoral research in areas currently supported through EPSRC funding. It also offers support to Early Career Researchers on new academic appointments or on prestigious Fellowships such as UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship. In all cases, students will be immersed in a supportive and thriving research environment.

King's has a strong bedrock of core sciences and DTP-funded opportunities will be available across pure and applied mathematics; in Photonics, Nanotechnology, Biophysics and Soft Matter and, Condensed Matter Theory and Simulation; and in Chemistry in areas with a focus on understanding the chemistry of life and the interface with biology and biomedical sciences. Further EPSRC-funded doctoral training opportunities in mathematics exist within the EPSRC CDT London School of Geometry and Number Theory.

We are committed to growing new activity in areas of Technology and Engineering. DTP-funded opportunities will be available within our growing research activities in informatics, brought together through research hubs in finance, heath, security, urban living and trusted autonomous systems, with further EPSRC funded doctoral training opportunities existing within our new UKRI CDT in Safe and Trusted AI.

The university has significant strength in Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences. DTP funded opportunities will be available in new areas of surgical and interventional engineering where we have created a new department with a significant number of new recruits including early career researchers. We will use our DTP to support studentships in areas of smart sensors and actuators (including medical robotics), materials, computer assisted interventions and computational modelling, big data streaming to deliver AI-based intraoperative decision support and surgical assistance. Further EPSRC funded opportunities exist within our EPSRC CDT in Smart Medical Imaging. These also align with research in our Wellcome Trust/EPSRC Centre for Medical Engineering and our new London Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence Centre for Value-Based Healthcare.

Students are supported through training at three levels, centrally through our Centre for Doctoral Studies (www.kcl.ac.uk/study/doctoral-studies), and at Faculty and at School/departmental level.

The interdisciplinarity of King's research and our partnerships and collaborations with other London institutions and beyond will enhance and broaden the applicability of the research and the student experience. Prospective students can research the subject areas we offer by visiting the postgraduate prospectus (www.kcl.ac.uk/study/pg). Students can identify specific areas of interest through supervisor profiles on the Faculty web-pages: the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences including Mathematics, Physics, Informatics and Chemistry (www.kcl.ac.uk/nms/research) and the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine (www.kcl.ac.uk/lsm) particularly the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences (www.kcl.ac.uk/bmeis). Information on the DTP is available through our Centre for Doctoral Studies (www.kcl.ac.uk/research/funding-opportunities/doctoral-research-opportunities/current-phd-opportunities/epsrc-cdt) offering information on how and when students and academic staff can apply for DTP studentships, and will link to the relevant department pages and contacts.
