Abstract
The Materials Made Smarter Centre has been co-created by Academia and Industry as a response to the pressing need to revolutionise the way we manufacture and value materials in our economy. The UK's ability to manufacture advanced materials underpins our ambitions to move towards cleaner growth and a more resource efficient economy. Innovation towards a net zero-carbon economy needs new materials with enhanced properties, performance and functionality and new processing technologies, with enhanced manufacturing capability, to make and deliver economic and societal benefit to the UK. However, significant technological challenges must still be overcome before we can benefit fully from the transformative technical and environmental benefits that new materials and manufacturing processes may bring. Our capacity to monitor and control material properties both during manufacture and through into service affect our ability to deliver a tailored and guaranteed performance that is 'right-first-time' and limit capacity to manage materials as assets through their lifetime. This reduces materials to the status of a commodity - a status which is both undeserved and unsustainable. Future materials intensive manufacturing needs to add greater value to the materials we use, be that through reduction of environmental impact, extension of product life or via enhanced functionality. Digitalisation of the materials thread will help to enhance their value by developing the tools and means to certify, monitor and control materials in-process and in-service improving productivity and stimulating new business models.

Description | 2023-2024 Update MMSC focussed on continual development of robust digitally-led approaches to guide manufacturing technologies. The Centre has engaged with industrialists to define future scenarios for how these technologies will impact the way manufacturing is conducted and their impact on both the businesses and the skills required by the work force. Our interdisciplinary team of researchers from across the Hub, are developing new tools, insights and applications for advanced powder processing technologies (AM) - working closely with Industry and our University and Innovation partners to translate our work from the lab to application. To enable this smooth transition, we have several aligned research projects to MMSC ranging from collaborative R&D programmes supported by ATI and Innovate UK as well as training, through Industrially supported PhD the next generation of engineers for the sector. Highlights include: - A paid for trial of a web-based modelling platform developed - Novel process replicators, that probe advanced powder processes at high temporal and spatial resolution have uncovered new fundamental process understanding - for manufacture and repair of critical components, at the Diamond synchrotron. These critical insights are feeding into process models and metrology work in both high pressure die-casting and additive manufacturing - Machine learning and control researchers have developed data driven approaches to predict 'printability' in AM and worked with industry partners to solve issues of rapid defect identification and correction in AM systems - A two phase model, that accounts for the underlying differences occurring during cooling to coiling of strip steel products - A Machine-learning based model for texture predictions for high pressure die casting - A machine learning model for forecasting of hot metal silicon content in a blast furnace. During MMSC we demonstrated that in the case of AM that the MMSC approach of hybrid data driven and computational modelling approaches for process definition and control reduces the process failure rate and increases the efficiency of manufacture. We have now begun to demonstrate that in-process monitoring can assist in understanding in-service performance and will extend this to developing through life models for materials manufactured. |

Description | - Work performed at the Diamond Light Source in creating 'physical twins' has led to Performance-driven design of aluminium alloys for additive manufacturing (PAAM, £335,213), Data-driven, Reliable, and Effective Additive Manufacturing using multi-BEAM technologies (DREAM BEAM, £399,163), Tailored Microstructures via Thermoelectric-Magnetohydrodynamics for Additive Manufacturing (TEAM, £331,295), and Manufacturing by Design. The digitalisation of manufacturing technologies has also progressed and supported by large industrial partners e.g. ATI (Aerospace Technology Institute) with Boeing, Renishaw and Alloyed (£13,990,000) as well as new collaborators in space applications through ESA (European Space Agency) on enabling active control of surface roughness during advanced manufacturing using laser pulse shaping technologies, and UKSA (UK Space Agency), in collaboration with Wayland Additive and MARS ltd., on electric Propulsion Innovations for Space and Electron Beam Manufacturing. Spinoff activity on digital technologies has progressed into two distinct opportunities; one exploring advanced design and monitoring tools for AM, which has received ICURe funding for market research activities and drafting patent documents to protect core IP. The second, a web-based and physics-based modelling platform, which has received funding (£10,000), permitting access for trial assessment. |
