Title | Characterisation of hot electron activity in metal films |
Description | We have developed a technique to measure the activity and mobility of photo excited hot electrons at a metal surface. The technique uses ultrafast pump probe spectroscopy to measure a transient change in the metal surface's reflection due to the generation of hot electrons at the surface. By scanning the pump beam position in space relative to the fixed probe beam, the diffusion of hot carriers can be determined. Mobile hot carriers are expected to be available for initiating chemical reactions. In the current grant, yea re using this to study how effective the hot carriers in various metal films used for prosthetic implants might be for anti-microbial function. |

Title | Deposition of High-Quality Plasmonically-Active Transition Metal Nitrides at Low Temperature |
Description | Plasmonic materials are finding a growing range of applications for sensing, medical treatments and photocatalysis. Standard plasmonic materials utilise gold nanoparticles which have a high performance however are unstable in many environments due to their proclivity to diffuse and degrade. Transition metal nitrides are ceramics, which have similar plasmonic activity to gold, are stable and resist harsh environments including high temperature, corrosion, and mechanical wear. Despite these attributes transition metal nitrides are not widely used as plasmonic materials due to their high melting point, which makes it difficult to synthesise them with high purity unless very high temperatures are used. This limits their applicability. The method developed at Sheffield Hallam University during uses a highly ionised plasma environment to grow these materials. The highly ionised flux available arrives with high energy at the substrate and provides sufficient energy for growth without the bulk of the material reaching elevated temperatures. The method relies on the plasma produced by High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering, which was developed and upscaled at Sheffield Hallam University. It uses high power densities to create extremely dense plasma containing active species. It produces very dense ceramic films with excellent optical performance. |

Impact | The new method extends the applicability of plasmonic materials to environments which are harsh - including exposure to high temperature, corrosion and intense mechanical wear. It also imparts an antimicrobial function through a photocatalytic reaction. The robust antimicrobial materials will be used in high-touch public spaces, e.g. hospitals as well as orthopaedic instruments and implants. |

Title | Spatially resolved Anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy |
Description | We have implemented a spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy set to measure Stokes and Anti-Stokes responses. The system is sensitive by employing feedback controlled positioning of laser excitation allowing for long integration times. In this way, we are able to measure the temperature of hot carriers. This has application in the analysis of hot carriers. |
