Abstract
Islands are conventionally associated with romantic ideas of local distinctiveness and isolation, and yet those situated off the west coast of Scotland and the Caribbean share the growing problem of coastal erosion through rising sea levels and storm intensification, as well as economic recession, depopulation and inappropriate tourism
development. Shared Island Stories considers past, present and future relationships between these archipelagos through museum and heritage studies, sustainable development, and memory studies. Building on new evidence into Scotland's links with the transatlantic slave trade, the project pushes boundaries around major debates in decolonisation and climate adaptation. It asks: Which collections from the islands tell shared stories of Empire? What is the role of heritage communities for sustainable development? How can island community museums partner with NGOs, policy and local organisations and businesses for climate action? How can health and wellbeing
be understood in relation to community heritage, traditional ecological knowledge and island life? What does this new knowledge bring to debates on climate justice, especially as they relate to the role of youth? A range of methods including new archival provenance research into island collections and colonialism, a participatory
knowledge-action network addressing present-day challenges, and a transatlantic youth exchange, will bring about inter-generational transmission of cultural and ecological knowledge. Through a carefully considered approach to historical and ecological relations, the research will also explore how public engagement with community heritage
can bring about significant health and well-being benefits to people. Seen through the lens of environmental museology, sharing island stories happens inside the space between colonised and coloniser, global South and global North, bringing human-ecological relations to bear on a novel transatlantic island museology.

| Impact | A Hymn to the Banished (2022) is a multi-part print edition by the Barbadian artist Annalee Davis. The work takes its departure from the landscape of Balmacara in the Scottish Highlands, drawing a thread from 1800 when Francis Humberston MacKenzie, landowner of Lochalsh and Kintail in northwest Scotland, became Governor of Barbados. Known as Britain's first sugar isle, Barbados' economic prosperity was built on the labour of enslaved African people, white indentured servants, both men and women, and the sugar trade. A Hymn to the Banished insinuates an interlacing of imperial linkages between Barbados and Scotland, inferring centuries of social disruption caused by the plantation system and the colonial project. With the forced transplantation of hundreds of thousands of enslaved African people and numerous Scottish, Irish, Welsh and English indentured labourers, systems of knowledge and rituals crossed the world's ocean currents, building new cultures in the Caribbean. British imperialism imposed banishment and generated suffering. Yet deep knowledge and a desire to heal profound traumas elicited practices that relied on ancient traditions connected to the land, and the remembering of sacred rites. The nine prints that make up A Hymn to the Banished explore notions of rupture, friction, entanglements, and the need to belong through rituals of incantations, charms, and the desire to repair the ills of British Empire-era indentureship and transatlantic chattel slavery. A Hymn to the Banished is a secular prayer recognising the intuition, knowledge, customs, and tenacity needed to confront and survive cruel, brutal conditions. A Hymn to the Banished was commissioned by the National Trust for Scotland and printed in collaboration with Dundee Contemporary Arts Print Studio. An edition of the work was acquired by the University of St Andrews Collections and Museums in 2022; this is the first time the work has been on display at the University of St Andrews. This exhibition was on view to the public from June to September 2024. An opening event attracted an audience of over 50 people, and visitors have commented that the exhibition has made them aware of white indenture in the Caribbean for the first time. |

| Description | Internationally, there is growing recognition of the wisdom of indigenous and native knowledge in relation to climate resilience and the preservation of human and biodiversity. However, while indigenous biocultural diversity is increasingly valued, it is also being eroded at alarming rates. Part 1 of our conference will be dedicated to building knowledge around relationships between traditional ecological knowledge and museology, recognising the value of museums and heritage sites in remote, island and coastal communities as the loci of research and encounters for understanding adaptation to climate change through time. In this forum, we will seek to better understand ways in which such traditional knowledge is influencing academia and public policies from a global perspective. At the same time, intergenerational transfer of traditional knowledge helps to safeguard identities and memories at risk of being lost. Museum and heritage sites can be focal points for this work by offering opportunities for people from different generations to engage with their heritage, thus strengthening their sense of identity and place. In seeking to move towards an ecological museology in times of climate emergency, we papers in this panel consider: • What is the role of community heritage in achieving local sustainability? • How can global well-being be understood in relation to community heritage? • How can rural, island and coastal community museums partner with NGOs, policymakers and local organisations and businesses for climate action? • What can indigenous heritage and traditional knowledge in rural, coastal and island areas teach us about resilience in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss and coastal erosion? • In what ways can museums and heritage sites work with local biodiversity, language and the unique nature of places towards local resilience? • What are the challenges and opportunities in engaging with the sustainability debates from an environmental humanities perspective, notably oceanic theories? • What does intergenerational transmission of indigenous and traditional knowledge bring to debates on climate justice, especially as they relate to the role of young people? • How can the elderly be best valued as a resource for preserving memories of environmental and cultural change? How might their memories be used? |

| Description | Project research has shed light on how island communities off the west coast of Scotland and in the Caribbean share global predicaments of coastal erosion through sea level rise and storm intensification, as well as economic recession, depopulation and inappropriate tourism development. Scholars of history, museum and heritage studies, sustainable development, and memory studies from both sides of the Atlantic have come together to understand past, present and future transatlantic relations between regions through an approach that bridges social science and the humanities. Outcomes have highlighted ways in which adaptation for sustainability can be understood not only as adjusting to changes through innovations in climate science, but also as a human story owing to the fragility of cultural identities and memories at risk. They are demonstrating how the climate crisis and decolonisation are intrinsically linked through transatlantic histories. Framed through the lens of "Past", "Present" and "Future", the project has engaged in extensive new archival research bring to light recent evidence around plantations, slavery and land ownership in the west of Scotland highlands and islands, and share this knowledge through conferences, peer reviewed publication, and our project website. In this frame, the novel island focus is decentralising museology by shifting it towards marginalised peripheries. It has produced creative outputs including an art exhibition and surrounding public engagement, and co-created videos and documentaries telling stories from each side of the Atlantic, thereby involving participants aimed at building mutual understanding between regions and bringing about collective transatlantic research supporting climate action for small islands. By concentrating on intergenerational transmission of this knowledge for youth in each and between regions, the Shared Island Stories project is in harmony with internationally agreed sustainability agendas to "meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Brundtland, 1985). In more recent SDG Agenda 2030 terms, our project outcomes are aligning to 'leave no one behind' (United Nations, 2015). |
| Exploitation Route | Others may take forwards research and/or policy recommendations from our outcomes including the topics of: - What heritage collections from Scotland and the Caribbean tell new stories relating to Empire and the islands? Peer reviewed research outputs are unearthing new and hidden stories of Scotland-Caribbean relations, notably from archives in Edinburgh, Inverness and the islands. Future scholars will build on this underpinning research to advance our understanding of this complex history. - What is the role of heritage communities for sustainable development in Scottish and Caribbean islands? The project has demonstrated how heritage communities are crucial to sustainable development, particularly through the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and traditional ecological knowledge. In Barbados, the Climate Hub at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society (BMHS) emerged as a direct outcome of youth research, positioning heritage spaces as platforms for climate dialogue and action led by young people. In Scotland's Outer Hebrides, community-led projects have integrated cultural heritage with tourism conservation initiatives, through visitor management and traditional crafts, ensuring that sustainability strategies are informed by local histories and indigenous environmental practices. Crucially, the project has highlighted the importance of sharing knowledge across generations, where knowledge holders play a vital role in transmitting skills, protecting traditional farming via crofting and cultural craftsmanship traditions such as Harris Tweed weaving to younger generations. This intergenerational exchange strengthens community resilience, ensuring that heritage continues to inform contemporary sustainability efforts and adaptation strategies in island contexts. - In what ways can island community museums partner with NGOs, policy and local organisations and businesses for climate action? Relationships built on both sides of the Atlantic with community collaborators are leading to research outcomes that are deeply informed by local experience and needs. These outputs both traditionally academic (such as invited talks and peer reviewed publications), and more tailored for the general public (such as blog posts and accessible videos), are open access and will inform future climate action for community museums. - How can health and well-being be understood in relation to community heritage, traditional ecological knowledge and island life? Outputs from the project are exploring this emerging research theme through close involvement with local community participants and focus groups. It is anticipated that outcomes will help support their agendas, as well as inform future research paths relating to museums and other cultural institutions in relation got health and well-being. - What are the best methods for engaging youth in intergenerational transmission of knowledge and transatlantic cultural understandings? The transnational youth exchange model has been a powerful mechanism for fostering intergenerational learning, ensuring that youth engagement is meaningful and impactful rather than tokenistic. Through storytelling, oral history documentation, environmental protection initiatives, and community-led workshops, young participants have actively contributed to both knowledge production and climate action within their communities. For example, creative outputs from the Scotland-Barbados exchange are being utilised by the Barbados Museum & Historical Society (BMHS), integrating youth-led narratives into heritage interpretation and climate discourse via their Education activities and Climate Hub. Additionally, in Scotland, young people are being employed by community-led development trusts such as the West Harris Trust and the Galston Estate Trust to drive youth-led initiatives in sustainability and local development. These roles empower young people to shape agendas on green energy, community resilience, and social enterprises, ensuring that youth voices actively contribute to long-term environmental and economic sustainability in their communities. - What does this new knowledge bring to interdisciplinary, transatlantic debates on decolonisation and climate justice? By bridging the intersection of history, heritage studies, sustainable development, art history, memory studies and youth engagement, the project has contributed to critical transatlantic conversations on decolonisation and climate justice. The work with museums, policymakers, and communities in Scotland and the Caribbean provides tangible examples of how heritage can be mobilised to address contemporary global challenges, societal understandings, museum policies and youth-led climate advocacy. |

These encounters have provided insight into the social and historical nuances on the island linked to people being dispossessed for their lands, stories and memories. Over the first year, she has shared much information new findings in the archives with Caribbean ties while keeping me up to date with new volunteers and research that many factor into Sacred Space and Social Memory. |

| Results and Impact | Local community members who work at Flourish Together in a managerial and caretaking position. Several carers from Kyleakin Connections who work with differently abed persons. The differently abled people, numbering 6, gather on Tuesdays. During my time on Skye in April, I volunteered and introduced by research perspectives to the team for three weeks. In November and December 2023, I spent 4 Tuesdays with the team planting, weeding, speaking about the power of nature to transform and heal and building deeper connections with the team. Weekly 6 carers, 3 administrators, 6 differently abled youth and adults meet at Flourish Together, a regenerative garden project in Broadford and Strath on Skye to plant, harvest, set seeds, do other activities in the communities, prepare different craft works and all around create a safe and brave space for exchanges. Over the period the meetings have been grounded offering me perspectives to gather information in an informal and organic method through embedded means. All three administrators from Flourish together are a part of the greater research process, meaning they will engage with me in several conversations over the period of 1.5 years. |

The project sought 6 fully committed young people (aged 16-25yrs) to take part who meet the following criteria; • They must be 16 years old by the time of travel to Scotland; • They must have an interest in local heritage, climate change and the issues facing island communities; • They must be respectful and open to different cultures and experiences; • They must have a valid Passport for travel by summer 2024; • They must follow their GP's medical advice for vaccinations and health guidance; • If they are under 18 years old, they must have their parent/carer(s) full permission and consent to take part; The young people involved will become "Youth Ambassadors" for heritage and climate change in their respective schools, community groups, countries and internationally. |

The global workshop series in collaboration with project collaborators has embraced the call to action for museum professionals by global youth climate activists, for greater involvement of young people to become agents of change in both contemporary museologies, across wider society, and seek to understand the role that museums can play to address climate change and the UN's Agenda 2030, particularly in underrepresented countries and communities, focused on island-based realities and what it means to be a young person living in an island in Scotland the Caribbean. The workshops will contribute towards research outputs and the general call for greater youth participation in museums. |

His session, "Young People Shaping the Future of Museology through the Lens of the SDGs", showcased youth research from the Shared Island Stories project, highlighting the Scotland-Barbados exchange as a model for transnational youth engagement in cultural heritage, sustainability, and participatory decision-making. The workshop encouraged young people to discuss island life, their experiences, and the challenges they face within both Caribbean and global contexts, exploring what it means to be a young person living on an island in 2025. Through open dialogue and interactive activities, participants reflected on the unique vulnerabilities and strengths of island communities in the face of climate change and how cultural institutions can support youth-led action for a more sustainable future. | Results and Impact | Shared Island Stories team members Professor Karen Brown, Jamie Allan Brown and Holly Bynoe jointly facilitated a workshop on the theme of Intergenerational Knowledge Exchange, as part of the Commonwealth Association of Museums conference titled "The View from Here: Sustainability, Community and Knowledge". The workshop was attended mainly by museum practitioners from New Zealand and other commonwealth countries' representatives in attendance. The purpose was to share our experiences from the Shared Island Stories project about ways to generate intergenerational transmission of knowledge, to discuss community benefits, and to spark questions and discussions from the group about their experiences, successes and challenges encountered. A number of participants reported interest in future transnational exchange. |
