Abstract
Nature has evolved an array of machineries and mechanisms for sustainably generating chemicals in a versatile manner from water, carbon dioxide and nitrogen from the most abundant energy resource available - solar. In contrast industrialised society relies on chemicals that are derived from fossil resources in energy intensive processes. The demand for key chemicals such as methanol, ammonia and polymer precursors is growing rapidly, driven by increased needs for use in agriculture, manufacturing and consumer products. It follows that there is an urgent need to find sustainable ways to generate the chemicals which we rely on in modern life. Scientific progress towards artificial, or semi-artificial light-driven materials that achieve these transformations is underway. But success will require input from a wide range of fields including chemistry, biology, chemical engineering and physics. This network proposes to bring together the key researchers to build a diverse community that can deliver the underpinning science and technology for a solar chemicals industry. We will support the community and faccilitate it to generate novel activities that advance the field through a series of events and travel grants. We will also work to raise awareness of this potentially transformative approach to sustainable chemicals and fuels production with the public and policy makers through a range of policy and outreach doccuments and events co-created with UK and international partners.

Up-Scaling Solar Hydrogen Production: Development and Demonstration of Photoelectrochemical Reactors
in ECS Meeting Abstracts
| Description | The Solar Chemicals Network funded by EPSRC has developed and supported an active community of 300+ researchers with common interests in the science and engineering challenges of Solar Chemicals production. The community developed has both industry and academic representation and the network has reached out to related fields to ensure cross discipline learning and engaged with international counterparts to amplify impact. Actions include: Supported community: 77 travel grants (>100 applications), 11 collaboration awards, 3 outreach programmes Events: 5 workshops (with sandpit funding) at the interfaces of themes. Includes with CatHub and European partners; 3 National Symposia ca. 100 delegates; relaunched an International conference - 300 delegates (with RSC); Webinars (with RSC) Grown UK's International standing: Leading UK contribution of Mission Innovation Community on Solar to X. Web platform advertises jobs, studentships conferences, >700 receiving mail-shot updates Outreach and Policy activities - lead to policy action (UK adopting Mission Innovation Challenge Community (sunlight to X) |

| Results and Impact | Solar Chemicals Network team members have been supporting and delivering the "solar suitcase program" where academic researchers are delivering lessons/sessions in schools for KS3 groups explaining how sustainable chemicals production could occur. Highlights are: • Developed an outreach kit that teaches about sustainability, climate change, and how solar chemicals can be used to solve these issues. • Focus on hands-on learner-driven activities. Total of 8 different activities, with a new card game and jigsaw game developed specifically for this. • Targeted children in low attainment schools. • Usually late primary school and early secondary (ages 11-13) classes. • Approx. 900 pupils participated so far in more than 35 classroom events. • Also an ALS school class and a nursery. • More than 1000 pupils took part in stall-based events. Two manuscripts being drafted on education/outreach activities • Development of lesson plans • Teacher training lessons took place. • Scottish Parliament exhibition with PlusZero. • Obtained research funding with community engagement in Thailand. Partner is at Chulalongkorn University. |
