Virtual Power Plant with Artificial Intelligence for Resilience and Decarbonisation (VPP-WARD)

Abstract
Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are small, modular energy generation and storage units, e.g., wind turbines, photovoltaics, batteries, and electric vehicles, that could be connected directly to the power distribution network. DERs play a critical role in achieving Net Zero. Presently there are over 1 million homes with solar panels in the UK. With the green energy transition well under way in the UK, by 2050 there could be tens of millions of DERs connected to the UK power grid.
Although DERs have many benefits, e.g., a reduced carbon footprint and improved energy affordability, they present complex challenges for network operators (e.g., low DER visibility, bi-directional power flow, and voltage anomalies), creating a major barrier to Net Zero. Meanwhile, natural hazards and extreme events are an increasing threat not only to humans but also power grid resilience - a direct impact is the power cuts, e.g., Storms "Dudley", "Eunice" and "Franklin" in February 2022 left over a million homes without electricity.
How best to manage millions of DERs is still an open question, especially for improving the grid resilience to natural hazards and extreme events, e.g., storms and heatwaves. This project will develop innovative physics-informed Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for enabling Virtual Power Plants (VPP), capable of aggregating and managing many diverse DERs; not only improving decision-making for network operators but also enhancing the grid resilience to natural hazards and extreme events. These could also lead to reduced energy bills for millions of UK energy consumers, less power cuts during extreme events, to greater adoption and more efficient management of DERs, and ultimately to enable rapid progress towards Net Zero.

| Description | In this project, we discovered: Smart AI tools that understand real physics can make predictions about renewable energy (like wind and solar power) much more accurate. This helps everything run more smoothly and efficiently, especially when lots of these renewable sources are linked together and managed as one big "virtual power plant" (think of it as a smart network that coordinates many small home solar panels, batteries, etc., to act like a single large power station). As more people drive electric cars, these vehicles can actually help make the electricity grid stronger and more reliable. Using a technology called vehicle-to-grid (V2G), cars can send some power back to the grid when it's needed most, kind of like letting your car battery help power the neighborhood during peak times, and this can be done carefully so the car's battery still lasts a long normal lifetime. We haven't studied enough how natural disasters (storms, wildfires, floods, etc.) really affect the power grid in detail. Being able to analyse their impact in real time and use that information to guide grid decisions would make the whole electricity system much tougher and better able to recover quickly. With more and more small, local energy sources (like home solar panels, small batteries, wind turbines, and electric car chargers) getting connected to the power grid, we urgently need better, bigger systems for handling all that data. |

Visitors learned about the hidden world beneath our feet, some centuries old, with hands-on activities, displays, demonstrations, and talks from University of Birmingham experts. This event was part of the AI Futures at The Exchange, University of Birmingham running from February to November 2024. The organisers received numerous written, formal and verbal feedback from attendees, and since then there have been several follow up activities as a result of this exhibition which further enhanced the impacts. |

| Results and Impact | I delivered a 40-minute presentation to the Computer Science research group at the University of York, where I introduced my research as part of the VPP-Ward project. My goal was to explore potential collaborations, particularly given their expertise in formal methods, which aligns with key aspects of my work. The presentation was well received and generated strong interest among the attendees. Following the talk, I engaged in an all-day meeting with two members of the research group to discuss potential collaboration opportunities. This meeting was highly productive, leading to ongoing weekly discussions and collaborative work exploring research synergies between energy systems dependability and formal methods for uncertainty mitigation. |

This led to fruitful discussions about the role of cloud/distributed computing in future practical applications, including power grid and transportation, and also higher education sector to achieve net zero target. |

| Results and Impact | At the Risk and Resilience Day 2024, held in Newcastle, I delivered a 10-minute presentation to a broad audience, introducing my research ideas. This event brought together researchers and academics from multiple universities, including those affiliated with the EPSRC Supergen Energy Networks Impact Hub, which addresses key challenges related to resilience, digitisation, policy, markets, and regulation for energy networks. After the presentations, I engaged in poster discussions with attendees who were interested in my research. This interaction allowed me to provide a more detailed explanation of my research approach, discuss potential applications, and address questions from experts across different institutions. This event provided a valuable opportunity to introduce my research ideas to a diverse academic audience, fostering potential collaborations. The Q&A and poster discussions enabled me to refine my research approach by incorporating insights from experts in the field. Additionally, engaging with researchers from different universities helped me explore connections between my work and ongoing projects in the energy networks domain. |
